Bistro One

My fiancé and I ate here for a birthday dinner. The scallops (an appetizer) were incredible and the staff was lovely and accommodating. Make sure to save some bread to dip in the scallop sauce (thanks to Katrina, our server, for the tip) 🙂 I chose the cognac flamed duck and found the outer crust to be too charred for my liking. Despite this being the intended serving method, our waitstaff replaced the dish with another duck breast that was not charred, which I preferred. It was delicious. My fiancé and I were a bit embarrassed but the team at Bistro One was so gracious and friendly, the experience was our best in a Thunder Bay restaurant in the three years we have lived here.

Both the beef carpaccio and duck leg confit were executed very well, though the duck confit was on the salty side. Duck breast was very tender and filet mignon was cover in a very interesting sauce that had a sweetness and a hint of spiciness. Filet mignon was ordered medium rare but it was more medium than medium rare. Service was very good, attentive and friendly. Desserts took a while to be brought out, cholocat gateau was said to need 15 min to prepare but took more like 30 min, which explains the melted in house made ice cream when all desserts were brought to the table. Overall a lovely experience with minor hiccups that prevented it from receiving a 5 star.

My husband suggested we go here for my pre-birthday dinner and it was fabulous. Both of us are from Vancouver and we find it quite a challenge to find a really good restaurant in Thunder Bay. Bistro One is the only restaurant in town that's close to fine dining quality like Vancouver. Excellent food with good service to match. My favourite is the seared tuna with wonton crisp (pictured here) that melts in the mouth. Will surely be back again soon.

This is officially one of my favorite restaurants in Thunder bay. I've been a few time before but this week was my first experience since they added the bar side. I've always preferred sitting at the bar so it made Bistro One more approachable for me personally. The bar is well designed and very elegant. Their drink selection and pricing is also amazing. The food is well worth the price even on a weekday. I've gone twice this week. Once with my partner and the second time by myself. My partner and I shared an app and entrée. The ahi tuna was absolutely perfect and well balanced. The second time I went I enjoyed the pork belly and short rib pasta. The pasta might have been one of the best pasta dishes I've ever ordered in restaurant. The real reason why I will continue to go back is the staff. The staff is unbelievable! A few mentions would be the manager on duty at the time Kale, bartender Cali, Leah, and Tesni. They are all so incredibly wonderful. When I was dining alone Cali even walked me to my vehicle so I wouldn't be alone. Definitely worth going if you've never been. 10/10

I had a business lunch here and it was very good. The seafood chowder appetizer was delicious and could have been a meal in itself, but we also tried the grilled cheese with a warm tomato salad and it was great for a cold winter day. We also had some chocolate mousse and the flavours were fantastic. The staff were very friendly and gave some helpful advice. I would definitely recommend you give them a try for lunch.
