Mesob was very good, and we will be back. They have a happy hour apparently, and we definitely want to check that out. I had the ribs and my wife had the Paella. Both were delicious. The Jerk/BBQ sauce was hot. It was delicious, but be sure you enjoy a bit of heat. I tasted the Paella, and it was delicious also. I had their "Mesob Old Fashion", and it was one of the better drinks I have had anywhere. So why 4 stars? Our server was sweet and friendly, however she didn't come around a lot. When one of us would make a request, she would shoot off without even taking a moment to ask the other if they wanted something also. I would have added the avocado salad, a second desert, and definitely another drink if I had the chance to ask. Overall it is a very good place, with a nice atmosphere. Their Old Fashion alone is worth going back for. Definitely add it to your list and check it out!

Wonderful experience for a hole in the wall. Romantic, warm and cozy place to take your wife on datenight or even just a guys night out either way the food was flavored for perfection especially if you order the salmon awaze tibs with a side of cabbage and potatoes, with yellow lentils and make sure you tell the waitress you want it spicy if that’s how you like it nevertheless the chef shall make it to your special desire. You will not be disappointed. The fried plaintains with guacamole was also delicious and very creamy just how I make it back home. But the dish I liked most of all was the jerk shrimp appetizer because I crave jerk literally all the time lol and to top it off with a drink I chose the rum punch. It was sweet but still had a great kick well priced and well deserved for someone who has had a long day and would like to unwind! Will definitely make this a go to spot in the future when I visit KC

The food was excellent and the decor is neat. Definitely feels like a somewhat upscale but casual location. The menu is unique and the food we had was great, so we are compelled to come back to try more. I had the ox tails as my main course and it was great.

This would be a five-star review, hands down, if not for the service. The food and atmosphere are fantastic. Went with a large party and everyone raved about the food. They could have easily doubled their liquor sales with our table if the server would have stopped by our table on a regular basis. Despite the service, we will be back.

Was craving a quick Caribbean vibe. This time was a treat! The atmosphere is upscale with bar seating and reservations are suggested. The service is professional. The fusion of Ethiopian and Haitian “Caribbean” is a plus. Our order consisted of 2(Pork Griyo) 1(Grilled Snapper) & 2(Rum Punches). The portions are decent, for the price of the items I would (Prefer MORE RICE & Sauce). The food is Made to order, so if you don’t mind waiting (Wait). While waiting on the food I used the restroom and the cleanness is top tier. Check Them Out

The atmosphere and the music are really great Lana was an excellent server. She made a very good flight recommendations. We all have different Tibbs. I think it’s like what I see and steak dishes that were spectacular. Highly recommend the cabbage and potato side.

A delightful place to celebrate a special occasion. The food was spectacular; we had shrimp curry and the jambalaya. Even the side salad was one of the best I've ever had. The drinks were so tasty and refreshing. Service was VERY good. We came for our anniversary before attending a concert at the Uptown theatre. So glad we chose to celebrate here.

beautifully decorated restaurant in an unassuming midtown location. the food was superbly prepared and was delicious. we all tried different items and shared. The plantain appetizer was totally awesome. Savory and the cilantro pesto was delightful. the shrimp curry was just the right amount of spices and so tasty the baked chicken and veggies was so flavorful. The service was a bit poor. but the Manager or Owner was amazing.

Wow. This restaurant is probably one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Kansas City. The food was absolutely delightful and the service was definitely amazing. All of the staff was nice and friendly along with the owner. We will definitely be going back and hope to have the same, or close to the same experience again! Thank you! Absolutely 10/10 would recommend.

Delicious!!! Some of the best Ethiopian food I've had, and I try to find Ethiopian food whenever I'm traveling. The space looks great and can accommodate larger groups. Can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu!

Ethiopian and Caribbean!! I chose the Ethiopian side on this occasion. It was so good I’m compelled to turn and try the Caribbean side next. Choosing the “sampler”, I got a taste of it all and it was all flavorful, good portions and just good. Yep, I couldn’t finish it but they offer to-go boxes. The presentation was nice; you could eat everything. The waitress was helpful in sharing the history of the restaurant and recommending meals. The ambiance was nice on a Thursday evening—personal and relaxing so you could enjoy the meal. I recommend it!

My cousin and his wife, along with my hubby and myself, really enjoyed the atmosphere and food at this Ethiopian Restaurant. They had a nice variety on their menu. We started off with appetizers - the oan seared crab cakes with a spicy sauce and the delicious parmesan fritters made from taro root! These were my favorites! For the main course, my hubby and I both ordered the braised oxtails, which were over a small bed of collard greens, green peas, a piece of of a carrot, and potato. My twob oxtails, although large and flavorful, were not as tender as they needed to be. We both opted for white rice (which came a little later) instead of the black mushroom rice since I am allergic to some types of mushrooms. I will say the sauce was ample and therefore make the rice taste so good! My cousin got the Jerk Ribs with parmasan fries with a spicy sauce and coleslaw. His wife ordered a seafood jambalaya. They both enjoyed their meals as well. We didn't order drinks, but the ones we saw looked really good. They have a very nice bar area! I would come back again!

Wow I was so impressed by this place!!! 👍😍🤤So delicious. Wow. On the pricy side but definitely worth it. We got the lamb i appetizer, which is conch, I’ve never had that before. It’s pretty chewy, seemed similar to calamari. It was delicious. Omg. The green sauce was soooo good. 🤤Wow. Great way to start. Then I got the oxtail main dish. Holy moly. That was so amazing. Wow. And huge portion as well. Oxtail 🐂does have a big bone in it but it’s fun sucking that bone clean haha. And wow the taste was just *chefs kiss*. 😘👌Delicious place!!!

My wife and I attended on Thursday evening 8/23/18. When we entered through the doors, the first thing that we noticed is that, there was no one to greet us. We stood in front of the greeting counter for sever minutes and then suddenly, we hear a voice that rang out with, "You can seat yourself". We both looked at each other and gradually walked around to the dining area. I immediately noticed that the place was not even close to full capacity. There were plenty of open seats for your choosing. Very important note: There were only 12 twelve others dining. The server finally approached us and provided menus, then asked if we would like anything to drink. We both ordered an adult beverage. The server then asked, "Is this your first time here"? We replied with "Yes". The next words that followed were; well, you're in for a treat. Boy, were we in for a treat. She started to pour water in our glasses as we started to review the menu. My wife asked a question about a certain item on the menu about how it was prepared. She began to explain and said the words that, "Nothing is ever fried here". (Well come back to this in a moment) She began to pour water in our glasses then needed to attend to the other customers, she filled my glass and then walked away. She forgot to fill my wife glass.

Our beverages arrived, and she asked if we needed anything else. My wife said, some extra napkins and, you forgot to fill my glass with water. She immediately apologized. No biggie, done deal, right?

About 15 minutes passed as I tried to nurse my beer as we waited for her to return. Then my bladder called for some relief. As I excused myself I proceeded to the rest room. When I was finished, I started to wash my hands. Hands dripping wet, I turned to look for some paper towels. Oh boy, none present, and the dispenser was out. I had to walk back to my table with wet hands and use a table napkin to dry them.

To make a long story short, we placed our order from the Caribbean menu. For starters, we had the Mesob Signature Jerk Shrimp. The shrimp was dry with no flavor like is maybe sitting around for lunch and recooked. I informed the waiter that I was not impressed and explained why. All she said was, oh well, we'll see how we can make up for that. She was the only one waiting on customers and I had a question regarding the Oxe Tails. Exactly at that moment, she said, can I answer when I get back? A order is ready and they hate it when it's not picked up. Understandably, I said, no problem.

She returned moments late and begun to take our order. Oxtail and Jerk Ribs. I asked about the Ox tails, she stated that they were plentiful. Comes with Collard Greens, Peas, carrots, etc. The order took very long to come out. My wife and I started to get frustrated. We decided then that after the food was brought out, we would just ask for to go boxes and take it home.

To sum this up. The Ox tail was extremely large but, it was all bone, yes, all bone with some fat attached. I don't know where they for this from but, I was disgusted. The Collard greens, well, that another story. What Collard Greens? Maybe four or five leaves which you could barely see, 28 peas, (I counted them) and one lonely thin steamed carrot.

The Jerk Ribs. Over cooked, dry, very dry. There were so many over cooked,(BURNT-SECTIONS) that it interfered with the flavor which maybe, they tried to hide the fact that they were over cooked. The Coleslaw that was given would not feed a 6 month old baby. After the fact, after we got home, we both wished that we had stayed to taste the food. I would not have paid for it. Just the drinks. It was that bad.

Fantastic Meal. We had to try this place after all the good reviews we read. The reviewers were absolutely right!!! What wonderful, wonderful food. Can't wait to go back again.

We decided to start by ordering several appetizers: Banane Pesse, which was fried plaintains and spicy cabbage slaw--loved the plantains and was lukewarm on the slaw; Spicy Beef Sambusa--amazing little rolls filled with beef, onions peppers--I wish we'd gotten a double order because they were so delicious; Taso Poule, which was marinated chicken breast on skewers--normally something like that would just be okay but in this case, it was seriously the most juicy and flavorful chicken I've had--probably ever--and that's saying a lot. Don't miss the Sambusa and don't miss the Taso Poule!!

For dinner, I ordered Kabrit Nan SOS from the Haitian part of the menu. This is a goat stew and don't let that scare you. The meat does not taste strange at all. It's just a very delicious rich stew with great spices and flavor. I've eaten goat stew several times while vacationing in the Caribbean. It's such a treat to now be able to find this dish locally and exactly as I remember it. The food here is authentic, not some Americanized version but exactly like you would get in a local island restaurant! Those fried plaintains that I got as an appetizer--well, I really got them as a side dish to go with this stew. To me, they are a perfect combination.

My husband decided to have Ethiopian food and chose the Key Wot, beef in a red pepper sauce with injera (bread). It was full of flavor--both of us loved it.

If you are adventurous and like trying new foods or dishes, this is the perfect place for you. Where else can you find two such different types of food -- Haitian AND Ethiopian on the same menu??? We will be back soon. This is the kind of place that I'd love to go to once a week until I've finished trying every item on the menu! They all sounded so interesting.

A Delicious Lesson in Culture

Mesob: a coloful basket with a flat top and a cover traditionally used in Ethiopia to carry and serve food.
Pikliz: a traditional spicy, vinegar-based, Haitian slaw made of carrots, onions, cabbage and habnero peppers (or scotch bonnets).

I have planned on visiting Mesob Pikliz since they first opened nearly a year ago. I wish I wouldn’t have waited. Today the lunch buffet consisted of : Injera (Ethopian flat bread), Keywot (beef stewed), Doro Wot (chicken stewed), Missir Watt (red lentils) , Cabbage (with turmeric), Legume with beef , Black Beans and Rice, White Rice, White Bean Sauce, Yellow lentils, and Hot tea. I went ahead and listed it all because I tried everything and would do so again. The stewed chicken was swimming in a thick, rich sauce and was falling off the bone. The stewed beef was fork tender – even though using one here is optional – and I could’ve eaten the red lentils and cabbage until I exploded. If you like authentic ethnic cuisine and food with a kick – this is your spot.

However, the food isn’t the only reason to visit MP. The owner/manager/host/server/chef (at least for the moment we were there) is a humble and kind man who was soft spoken, courteous and informative. Whether it was when he ran to the door to let us in when we showed up early for lunch or when I asked what Mesob Pikliz meant and got lesson in culture that made me feel as if I were actually on a trip abroad. I learned that you will find a version Pikliz in nearly every home in Haiti. Though it was not on the buffet, he brought us a sample of his. It is H-O-T, but it was so delicious I couldn’t stop eating it.

I am looking forward to going back for dinner when I have time to order from the menu. After this experience there are so many more things I want to try.

Do not let the old stereo-types about Independence, Ave. keep you away from this restaurant. Here you won’t find bars on the windows but you will find a clean restaurant with white table linens, cloth napkins and food you will not soon forget.
