Update - Fall of 2023
My wife and I returned to Agave Roja this past October for dinner. We wanted to see if our experience back in 2022 was a fluke. It was. I cannot express how eating in the restaurant was better than getting takeout. The food was excellent; the service was spot on. Our waiter had many suggestions, from the specials to sauces, if we wanted to try them. We just had such a great time. So, that said, I'm updating my review. Next time we're back in the Corolla, we're heading to Agave Roja.
Initial Take out visit Fall of 2022
Was just there last week. Spent $88 dollars for take out lunch (plus a 20% tip). My wife ordered veg fajitas and I ordered Borchetta de camarones, along with a quart of Cucumber & Jalapeño marg mix. When I got there my order was waiting. Got home and found the quart missing. Checked my order and was just very under impressed with brocheta de camerones. At $27 dollars, I expected more than what you can see in the picture. My wife was really upset because as a vegan, she doesn't have a lot of options from restaurants. When she got her meal it was soggy and she didn't bother eating it. I wound up calling the restaurant and they apologized about the missing the quart. I drove back and picked it up. So to spend over $100 dollars for this just not acceptable. The saddest part is that Cucumber & Jalapeño marg mix was the best part of the meal. Just wished the rest of the meal was as good.

Wife and I had excellent meal at Agave Roja. Got drinks first at bar and bartender was very friendly - took time to talk to us even though bar was busy. Server was great and food was authentic. Chips, guac and couple entrees…all outstanding. Locals should try to get up here off season.

Good food! Try the burrito or fish 🌮 tacos.... service was great. A little pricey but the food and staff are worth it. Has outdoor seating.

Their seafood enchiladas singlehandedly have me coming back to Corolla from Texas soon. I am not lying when I say this is some of the best Mexican food I have had ever.

We enjoyed fantastic Mexican food, a queso fundido I could have eaten a gallon of, a broad selection of delicious tequila drinks. This felt like the kind of place where everyone is welcome and will feel at home, from families with littles to friends hanging out at the bar.
Our server was hospitable and warm, and the food was clearly made with love by people who were proud to share their food with us.
This place is in the back of a building in a nondescript Food Lion shopping center so you might not even think to go in, but that would be a mistake.

the food was delicious the service was great and the atmosphere was nice. my family was served at the bar, we had fish tacos, carne asada tacos, a steak quesadilla and the chicken mole enchiladas. we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. the rice and black beans were surprisingly flavorful. staff was friendly and quick. I would highly recommend agave roja to anyone visiting the corolla/obx area.

We were a party of three and were told there weren't any tables available.We instead sat at the bar and got excellent service from a friendly but busy bartender.The margaritas were excellent,chips and guac were tasty as well.We enjoyed our entrees and again the service was excellent.I did see a three percent service charge on the menu.We had left the bartender a twenty five percent tip(deservingly so) but what is this thee percent service charge?Am I tipping the kitchen now?As long as any restaurant tacks on any "service"fee,I will not return.Shame, the food and service was good.

We sat at the bar and had a very knowledgeable bartender. It was very busy. We had shrimp and chicken fajitas which were delicious. Chips, salsa and guacamole were also very good! Guac was fresh!! Drinks were excellent!! The cucumber jalapeño drink was perfect!!
