Fantastic. Absolutely wonderful barbecue right at the crossroads. The staff was charming in a sense that they could do this in their sleep and could likely just order for you. The tamales with chili and cheese were great! The slaw was fantastic, but the undisputed star of the show was the Big Abe Bar-B-Q pork sandwich. Sonny Jim on a rooftop that was a great sandwich. Go in, be polite, enjoy great food and great people in a classic restaurant environment.

We met and talked to the owner outside along with his wife and grandson.
Wonderful people.
We had the double pork bbq sandwich and baked beans.
Delicious!!
They gave us a free bottle of their sauce and a plate of tamales free!!
We highly recommend stopping here to eat.

Bbq restaurant recommended by locals. It is a place with al lot of history and good honest southern BBQ food. Location is next to the famous blues cross road, a must visit for blues lovers (although not that impressive on itself)

For someone who hated BBQ growing up i could remember the anticipation of getting to come here on Friday nights as a kid. I am proud to say that nothing has changed in 40 years and they still have the best BBQ and Tamales on the Planet!!!!

First visit to Abe’s. My husband had the ribs & said that they were very good. We tried an order of southern hot tamales & enjoyed their spiciness. I had the chicken tenders which were just ok. The best part of the meal was the friendly man who took our order & made sure that we were taken care of…he was a gem!

A classic eatery right at the Crossroads. Have eaten there every time I visit Clarksdale, and have not been disappointed. Good food, friendly service, down-home atmosphere. Recommend!

Good BBQ. We ate here several times. The onion rings are the best I've ever had. The beef sandwich was good , just needs more sauce. The fries are ok and the bbq sauce is so good we bought some to take home.

Abe's struck me as "Old School Mississippi" BBQ. (I say that based on watching a recent episode of Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown" where he explored BBQ in this part of Mississippi and even the chefs he talked to said it was hard to put your finger on a specific characteristic of their Q!) Abe's looks like it's been there a long time and all the music related photos (Elvis, etc) on the walls help set that mood. I had The Big Abe sandwich which was the pulled pork with cole slaw and some great baked beans. It was all around good eatin' and the folks were very friendly. A great stop on my long drive down from St. Louis!

July 23, 2015 · by willoughbyandy · in Barbecue, Mississippi, Southeast · 2 Comments. We rolled into Clarksdale, just ahead of a storm that we had driven through for most of the last 100 miles, following us like a “Hellhound on My Trail”. Driving south through Arkansas into Mississippi, we were going down to the crossroads, hoping to catch Abe’s Bar-B-Q, as opposed to a ride.

Not great bbq. Sauce on the other hand is great. Ate here few months ago and it was so so. Figured I might have just been on a bad day. Nope it's just not good. Taste like it's cooked to fast and then sliced and finished. Not the way to do bbq. People are nice so I may stop in again and try a burger.

Devine intervintion. We were on a 10 run from Texas to Nashville and back and this was an accedental stop. I just turned off the highway to find some lunch and this is the 1st place I saw. You have to stop at a joint that advertizes BBQ and the Blues since 1924. I am a spare rib man but the babybacks they cook up are excellent. I will surely be back to the Cross Roads agin someday to give this a try.

We were leaving Jackson heading to spend the night in Clarksdale to soak in the community committed to the blues. Tweeted out "where is the best place to eat between Jackson and Clarksdale" to some heavyweight foodies. Wright Thompson almost immediately responded, " Abe's". We were on schedule to make it in plenty of time. Left home at 5 am so we were hungry for sure... But we were slowed down by some crazy hard rain. Elated that we made it by 1:30 ( published close time is two). We were turned away at the door at 1:30. Rudely. With a full restaurant. On a Sunday where there is not much open in Clarksdale. I understand if you are a fine dining restaurant and you wouldn't have time to prepare the food properly and you take reservations, but a BBQ joint? I know this review will not diminish their business because from all accounts their food is fantastic... But in the spirit of southern hospitality they failed miserably. They may need to remember that it is how you treat customers that determines the longivety of your business. Disappointed .

You know I’m the guy who usually passes on “local legends” as far as restaurants; too many seem to be resting on their laurels of decades ago, and I’m usually disappointed. Like Stanich’s in Portland, or Dick’s Hamburgers in the Seattle area. Happy to report that’s not the case with Abe’s Bar-B-Q in Clarksdale, MS, dishing out smoked grub and other eats for the past 90 years. Located at the famous “crossroads” immortalized in song by Eric Clapton, it’s the location where blues guitarist Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil to give him history changing talent. Abe’s has a relatively short menu of BBQ sandwiches, including pork, beef, and ham. A few other things like burgers and fried chicken round out the menu, with sides of beans, fries, and slaw.

I will never be eating here again. We got here and were some of the first ones at lunch time, an hour and a half later we still didn't have our food. People who came only twenty ago got their food within ten minutes. There will definitely be no tips on this meal.

It was so good, I thought about how I’d give ANYTHING to get a replica of the Abe’s Bar-B-Q/Crossroads t-shirt my waitress was wearing. Well, just about anything.
Good service. Someone mentioned that locals complained about the service. I've eaten at Abe's many times and have always had great service.

-----20 Nov, 2011-----

Best Ever Ribs. Abe's seems to be best known for the Big Abe's pork sandwich but I highly recommend the BBQ ribs. The baby back pork loin ribs I had today, fresh from the pit, were the best I have ever had.

Best BBQ sauce in Mississippi. I really like Abe's a lot and know the owner very well. My favorite thing at this place is the BBQ sauce. I buy it by the bottle, which they sell, and put it on potato chips, french fries, and even hamburger. Ha, I know that sounds crazy but it is so good. I will be honest though, the BBQ is not the just "Oh my God" best in the world, but it is pretty good. They also have some dang good hamburgers. The staff is super nice and sweet and is always there to help you out. I visit this place about 5 times a year and always have a great time. Stop on by and try it out.

It's A "Clarksdale/Delta Thing". I grew up eating at Abe's...before they built on, back when there were only barstools and a few booths. The sauce is a vinegar/tomato based sauce that is extremely unique. The Big Abe Bar-B-Q has three buns and two layers of meat, slaw and sauce. The Big Abe Chili Cheeseburger is also a stacked masterpiece! The meat and the sauce have been the same since the place opened. It is still family owned and operated by the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the man that started it WAY BACK in the day. I LOVE Abe's and so do most all Delta people...but we grew up with it. It is fair to say that I went to a very famous BBQ restaurant in Charleston, SC and HATED the mustard based sauce...but BBQ is such a regional thing, isn't it?

DON'T GO OUT OF YOUR WAY. A tourist trap. Most eating here were not locals,,,,,check the car tags. I read the comments on this restaurant before I went and was excited. That was a mistake. I agree with the who have said if you love this BBQ you have never had good BBQ. It was edible, tasted fine, just certainly not great. There is hardly enough meat on each sandwich to taste it. I had BBQ at 5 places on my visit to Clarksdale, This was the worst, by far. The places with the best BBQ aren't full-time eateries or only have BBQ on special days, such as Hopson, Delta Amusement, and one I can't remember the name of. Abes could go buy 3 BBQ's at Hopson, and use the meat to serve up all the sandwiches he would on a busy day.

19 percent don't know GREAT Bar-B-Q. I noticed on the site on reviews that 19 percent did not like Abe's Bar-B-Q. ABE'S is the best that there is, bar none!!! Must have been from the Memphis Bar-B-Q restruants or somewhere else. I will put Abe's up aganist whatever or any other Bar-B-Q place. Those 19 percent must have no teeth or taste.
JJ Greenwood
