Family run restaurant with really nice thin crust pizza and one of the best places for calamari I've tried in the city. Staff is friendly, simple decor.

A group of six of us booked a reservation for Friday night at 6:30. The place was full. The restaurant is very simple, yet cozy. We were served immediately and the two ladies working this evening worked very hard to ensure that everybody had a great time. We ordered three different pizzas. Il Centro serves two sizes of pizza. The small have 4 large slices. A large pizza has 8 large slices. I do recommend large so you have takeaway. The pizza crust is very thin and light and all the ingredients fresh. Always reheat this pizza in the oven, not the microwave. Thank you for the great service and a great evening!

Great food, service and atmosphere takes you back to Italy. Menu has the basic pasta and pizza mains and big wine list. Ingredients are fresh. Pizza was amazing. Dough was crispy and chewy and melty cheese and fresh cuts of meat. Gluten free pasta was delicious and didn’t taste gluten free at all. You have to make reservations for this place as there are only about 10 small tables and this restaurant is always full.

The pizza being a wonderful choice in this small, unpretentious and authentic Italian eatery, a shout out for the Scampi!! Perfectly cooked and served on the shell atop a bed of lemony buttery rice with a dusting of garlic cracklings. Fantastico!!!!

I like it. It's got a little family diner feel to it. Probably because it is. It doesn't look like much from the storefront but the atmosphere is great! The pizza is delicious! Great dough. Perfect ratio of dough to sauce. Super cheesy! Also, they're a good size. Sides and appys are awesome. I like the bruschetta and calamari.

So I have been to Il Centro quite a number of times in the past and their food has always been good with decent service. I recently went to the restaurant and noticed the menu has changed and their prices have also increased significantly. At the end of our dinner when I received the bill it was over $250 for five. Well that was a bit of a shock, but when I went to pay the bill the credit card machine defaulted to a 20% tip, I changed that to 15% and paid accordingly. For the food, drink, and the service we received for 5 persons I thought the bill of $300 including the tip was pretty steep. If I had gone to a 4 or 5 star restaurant then the cost would have been fine and expected but for Il Centro it is definitely too expensive. Unfortunately, will not likely be patronizing the restaurant again due to the cost vs value factor.

Great Pizza....weird hours! I loved (past tense) Il Centro's pizza. I recommend them to everyone! However...I have to say, when I walk into the restaurant at 1:30 pm to order a pizza and I'm told "sorry...we're closing soon" was major disappointment....especially when their sign says they are open until 2pm! I drove there for a pizza TO GO fulling knowing that they closed at 2pm but was shocked that they weren't willing to make one. I can only assume that the fact that I was taking the pie to go weighed heavily in their decision, since I wasn't buying drinks and appetizers which = a bigger tip! Blown away. Probably won't be back :-(

My problem with this place is the owner and the atmosphere.....last night the restaurant was filled with smoke and it was close to 30+ degrees inside with ZERO ventilation.....the absolute most uncomfortable I have ever been in a restaurant....the male owner was our server and did not take care of our table at all....we were left without beverages for a very long time and he seemed very annoyed when we asked for plates or to open a window/door to get some air in that place...all the tables around us were also complaining. Learn to create an environment where people actually want to stay and eat. Hire servers instead of doing it yourself bc the only bit of good service we got was from a young man that seemed to start working at about 730 as we were leaving. Will never ever be back for overpriced food and a brutal environment. We will have to dry clean all of our coats bc of the stench of smoke on us after we left....brutal.

Delicious. The BF and I found ourselves here after a movie at chinook. This place does not look like it's a cute and cozy restaurant from the outside. When you get inside though it's adorable. Red and white checkered table clothes and a pretty decent ambiance save for the television. This is definitely a family business and you can tell they do what they do well but they also want to be comfortable.

We ordered a large pizza which we were allowed to half down the middle with two different flavours. We also ordered the calamari. Despite being expensive the calamari was well worth it. Delicious and also the portion size is massive. Pizza was also amazing.

The person that sat us who I assume was the owner checked on us several times and was very friendly and prompt. It was such a warm night when we were there that they had the doors open because it was a bit stuffy inside. Sadly this meant that the restaurant started to fill with mosquitos so though we wished we could have stayed longer we couldn't. It felt a bit like we were camping.

The restaurant had two large groups and it can easily accommodate that but is also perfect for two.

I would definitely eat here again.

I'm not a jealous girl. I'm not. But when my boyfriend's spaghetti pomodoro basilico was placed on the table, there was a part of my brain that methodically went through a step-by-step process of how I would knock him out and eat his plate of pasta before he regained consciousness. Just saying. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with my dish, but his dish...his dish was like the pasta angels got together and decided to create a dream come true (so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair and gold and starlight in your eyes of blue - name that song!).

For those who enjoy a traditional Italian pizza with Pepperoni, Mushrooms and Green Peppers than you will find this pizza on their menu. But the menu is the only place you'll find it.
Tonight I ordered the "Pepperoni" which the menu claimed had Green Peppers on it. To my suprise there were no Green Peppers but an abundance of Red Peppers. I proceeded to ask the waiter (a young Italian gentleman) why the Red Peppers? and no Green Peppers? His response: "oh we haven't used Green Peppers on that pizza for so long, like a long time." Ummm, okay is it just me or should a restaurant rated this highly not have CORRECT ingredients listed on their menu? And should they not inform a patron when taking the order of the uncorrected change to a menu?
Sloppy and unrespectful is what I noticed and cheated and ignored is how I felt.
The young waiter did offer to make me a different pizza but it wasn't a different pizza I wanted. What I wanted is to go to a nice restaurant (which the menu prices reflect) and have a delicious and calm evening with no issues.
I proceeded to tell the waiter that I didnt need a new pizza because really who likes to sit and watch the company you're dining with eat while you wait for a new meal to be cooked, and then they have to sit and watch you eat when you finally get your new meal. So I declined the different pizza and the young waiter shrugged his shoulders and made a muffled "hhmmff" sound and went on his way.
Overall I guess what I'm saying is if they hadn't been usung Green Peppers "for so long" then why are they still on the menu? Why? This place isn't Domino's Pizza. It's a high end and rather pricey dining experience that should NEVER have had a menu mistske like that, especially for so long.
Although I really enjoy their food it will be a long time before I return to Il Centro. Unfortunate....

Luv it. Had dinner at il centro thurs nite. I had looked at the menu online and thought there was not much I liked but the husband wanted to go for his birthday so I was okay with that. was I surprised. one of the best Italian meals I have had and so unexpected. had the scampi - so good. the bit of rice was a nice addition. then I was torn between fetuccini alfredo or veal with creamy mushrooms. thanks to our terrific server I had the pasta along with the veal as the side. it was all delicious. server was sooooooo obliging. and to top it off had a homemade lemoncello made with milk I make lemoncello but have never had it creamy. mmmmmmmmmm good.
finally the rolls. couldn't figure out why they were so good. finally got it that they were made from the pizza dough. had a terrific flavor. I would buy these to take home if I could.
all in all I had a delightful experience. certainly not what I expected from a pizza joint. prices were par with any good italian restaurant. if it were mine I would turn the lights down a bit, and put some candles on the tables to up the ambiance. I will be back - maybe tonight.

After reading these reviews I was expecting to enjoy one of the best most authentic pizzas in town. We were pretty disappointed with our margherita pizza
and ate only 1 piece each, normally we
would gobble up several pieces. It
wasn't much different from a fast
food pizza but twice the price. It was
made with regular mozzarella instead of
fresh mozzarella (also known as
bocconcini or bufala mozzarella or fior
di latte). In Italy the word mozzarella implies fresh mozzarella. I never saw the N. American kind of mozzarella there.
There are better and authentic Neapolitan pizzas in town for lower
prices and better decor/location too.
Sorry I really wanted to like this place
but it didn't deliver on the promise.
Perhaps we just ordered the wrong item but margherita pizza is a classic pizza that should be done well. Makes me wonder about the rave reviewers...probably never been to Italy.

Best pizza in Calgary!. Great thin crust pizza like you would get in Europe. Service is fine never had a problem with it and have been there numerous times. The servers are quick and efficient. If you want some young hipster server to talk your ear off then go somewhere else. They generally have two seating times 5 and 7. They are sometimes closed for a few weeks at a time with no notice and they don't even have an answering machine if you call after hours. It's part of the charm or the place. Decor is classic tacky Italian basement (complete with Christmas lights year round). If you want to be seen and have your butt kissed go somewhere else. It you want amazing Italian food try il Centro!

Can't review this place because I've tried to eat here twice, and both times the restaurant was closed when they should have been open. If your hours of operation are 5-10 then be open at 5! Arrived shortly after five both times and the place was dark inside and closed. How badly does that reflect and the owners and the restaurant. Will NOT be trying for a third time.

Good food, Aware of Service. Food very tasty. A group of us enjoyed delicious pizza, lasagne, fettuccini, and gnocchi. Recommended a wine - enjoyed it very much. Delicious cappuccino and tiramisu. Service - food served promptly. One waiter shared good recommendations for meals. Appreciated this. Our waitress a little unfriendly.

** Bill end of evening - one handwritten bill for entire group. Would not split. Unfriendly in way was handled. We spend time deciphering numbers and calculating our own bill. A bit of a nuisance.

Suggestion: In future, staff could in a friendly way explain before meal served to groups. It was not what happened so much as how staff dealt with the situation.
This can't be the first time this has happened - being proactive a better way to ensure food and service continue to bring customers back.

Good food, awful service. I have never written an urban spoon review but felt compelled to do so after eating at Il Centro's recently.

The food was good, but the service was awful and I don't think we will ever be going back. I had made a reservation a week in advance for a larger group to celebrate a birthday. When we arrived, we ordered some wine as we waited for the rest of the group to arrive. We were looking forward to a nice, relaxed dinner with friends. However, about 1/2 hour into our reservation, when we were ordering appetizers, the server told us to please order quickly, because the table was needed in less than an hour and a half for another group. I found this to be a bit ridiculous, especially when I had not been told before hand - either when making the reservation or when we first arrived - that there was another reservation so close to ours. If this had been communicated to me, we would have gone somewhere else. I don't think it is unusual to order a drink and then take some time before ordering an appetizer.

After that, the entire dinner was rushed because we were all keeping an eye on the time. By no means were we planning to stay there for hours, but I think 2-2.5 hours is perfectly acceptable for a dinner with a larger group. By the time the table was cleared, there was no time for us to order desserts or coffees.

As we waited to pay, there was a miscommunication about the gratuity on the bill, and very little patience shown by the server.

I have to say, for the amount of money that we spent (about $400), I would have expected a bit of effort from the serving staff to make us feel welcome. This was absolutely not the case - instead, we just felt like we were being rushed and pushed out as soon as possible.

The food was good, but certainly not worth the terrible service. We will not be going back to Il Centro.

Ensalada Plastic. You know those anemic, plastic tomatoes you find at Safeway? Il Centro's lunch ensalada Caprese is $9.50. It consists of one plastic tomato - value, about .40 cents - one boccincini ball sliced, a few sprigs of basil and a scant drizzle of balsamic reduction with oil. I wouldn't dream of serving those tomatoes to anyone, and I certainly don't expect them in a restaurant.
Any self-respecting Italian would serve real, vine tomatoes.

The small pizza was good but $18.00, so again poor value.

You've got a hundred choices of good Italian here in Calgary - I suggest you go elsewhere for good food with value.

If it's good Italian cooking that you crave for then head on over to Il Centro. But reservations are highly recommended because it is a popular among pasta and pizza lovers. We started off with the Calamari rings which we were told that it was only available on weekends. Being inland, I guess calamari is hard to come by or their weekday clientele isn't very adventurous. The rings were a nice start but I wished they doused them in tomato sauce instead of serving them dry. Everyone who has been to Il Centro had raved about their pizza and so, we ordered one to share. We were hoping if we were still hungry, we would try their pasta too. But once the pizza was served, there was absolutely no way to fit anything else. They loaded up the toppings which included proscuitto, capicollo, mortadella, salami and pepperoni. It was an Italian feast for four but we were only a twosome. The dough was springy and thick, just like the way my wife likes it. I usually like the way New Yorkers make pizza,

Il Centro is one of my favorite hidden gems that is tucked on a side street across from Chinook at 6036 3rd Street SW. I have dined here a few times and forgot my camera until I took my mom for dinner this past week . OMG our meal was amazing! With all of the box store restaurants in the surrounding area this restaurant is a diamond in the rough. Just like mama used to make, the Italian operated and owned has some of the best pizza in town and the homemade pasta is out of this world. Make SURE you get the gnocchi in the house rose sauce with ham and mushrooms.. Oy I cannot stop thinking about it!!! YUM! Il Centro serves up traditional, thin crust Italian pizza with homemade tomato sauce and is easily one of the best Italian eateries in the city. I wasn't sold after my first visit but I've drank the Koolaid after this past one! Here is what we had:
We had high hopes for this place, but were very disappointed. The place was very small and had a horrible smell of fish. When we got home our clothes smelt up our apartment. This was an initial turn off. We heard the pizza was amazing so we gave it a go. I would say it was mediocure and over priced. A large pizza was $30. The pizza was bland and the ingredients tasted cheap. The service was decent except the server tricking us by talking in Italian about peppers. We thought she meant peppers that you put on top of the pizza that most places have. We agreed to it and then she brought out roasted jalapenos that we never ate and got charged for. We would not eat here again.

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night with some friends. All of us wanted to try this place due to its high ratings and great reviews. It was not terribly busy for a Saturday night - there were quite a few empty tables through the night. We were seated right by the kitchen and after reading some reviews about the restaurant being extremely hot and stuffy I was afraid it would be an issue. It was a pretty hot day afterall. Luckily that wasn't the case. We started with bruschetta and the calamari. The bruschetta was excellent. The crispy baguette was topped with sweet and fresh tomatoes. The bruschetta was seasoned very well. The calamari was also quite good - very lightly fried with a small amount of marinara sauce mixed in. However I found the portion to be quite small for $16.50! We ordered two pizzas, the calabrese and the capopollo. The small pizzas are 10" (more like an individual pizza) and the large 15" (enough for two people). The crust was light and crispy and there was a good amount of filling in each. I preferred the calabrese over the capopollo. The sausage added a lot of umami flavor to the calabrese however the capopollo was a bit of a disappointment as it was not in the least bit spicy. Although the pizzas were quite good I do think they are overpriced for what you get. We ended the night with their tiramisu which was amazing! It was light, subtly sweet and had a nice espresso flavor. It was probably one of the best tiramisus I've had. I really hate overly sweet tiramisus as it takes away from the delicate nature of the dessert. The service was mediocre. Our waters only got topped up once through the whole night and our dinner companions were never asked whether they wanted another glass of wine or ceasar. The restaurant is kid friendly for those dining with little ones.

My daughter-in-law had told me about II Centro be it was delicious and very busy at lunch because all the local Italian business me eat here. It was a bit hard to locate but we gave it several tries and it is wonderful. The best home gnocchi - with the taste is of farm fresh eggs perfectly married with that great Canadian wheat & potatoes prepared with optional sauces. My husband's white vongole was and I thought it was perfectly cooked, dry with EEVO - not too much butter. The subtle favour of garlic The tomato salad with the buffalo mozzarella what delicioso. Excellent Pizza and Pasta. It's always a good sign when you see Italians dining in an Italian restaurant. This is a small family-run restaurant with an authentic feel and taste. The pizza is thin-crust and chewy. The pasta is cooked al dente. The house salad is simple, fresh and tasty. It's best to call ahead and reserve. The smell of calamari is fairly prevalent. Pizza: Crust A+, Sauce C. Been looking for good Italian pizza place since moving here from Colorado. Saw reviews on Urban Spoon so I tried it. Pizza crust was great, toppings good, but sauce reminded me of Chef Boyardee or Franco America, like the sauce that Spaghettio's comes in. For the price, try Una's on 17th or Iron Goat in Canmore if you are looking for thin crust, good sauce pizza.

Order Take Out, Don't Visit This Place. The short version: awful service. Hot, stuffy restaurant with zero ventilation. Rude waitress. Excellent pizza. Get take out.

The long version: It's hard to describe what an awful dining experience I had at this restaurant. We were there for a family event, at a table of six. Three of us showed up and were seated at a table. For 15 minutes we sat there, in the very stifling heat (hot ovens, no windows opened), watching as the waitress and two waiters passed by us again and again, ignoring us. We watched as people who arrived after we did get near-immediate service. I can only assume that we were ignored because it was clear the other members of our party weren't there yet. But why not take our drink orders at the very least? Or get an appetizer started? When our friends showed up, we waited for another five minutes, and were still being ignored by the staff.

I eventually got the attention of the waitress and asked her if we could get her to take our order because we hadn't been served yet - she literally sneered at me. I've never experienced anything like that in my life at a restaurant. I simply wanted to get some drinks and order an appetizer, and she abruptly informed the table that the kitchen was "crazy" and we had to order all of our food at once. That made for a slightly uncomfortable feeling as we quickly had to decide what we wanted to order.

Our drinks came in a few minutes. Who serves a can of cold pop without ice in the glass? Il Centro does. Then our Calamari came - and they brought two orders instead of one. The waitress knew we only ordered one, but she asked us if it was OK that we had two orders - after we had already started eating from both plates (I thought they just split up one order on two plates). What was I supposed to say at that point? The Calamari was very good, I'll say that much, but at any other restaurant they would have recognized it was their mistake and only charged us for one. Not at Il Centro.

Our food eventually came, and the pizza was very good - probably some of the best I've ever had outside of Rome. But the events leading up to that first bite of pizza were so irritating it was hard to fully enjoy the food. The waitress never returned to ask us if we wanted anything else, or how the food was. As we were nearing the end of the meal one of our party flagged down a waiter (since our waitress was ignoring us) and asked for another beer for himself and someone else at our table. 15 minutes passed, we had finished eating, and those drinks never came.

We waited another 20 minutes or so, and our waitress never came to clear the plates or ask us if we wanted anything else (coffee, dessert, etc.). The heat inside the restaurant was awful. I caught her on the way back from another table and asked for the bill. She came back with it, we paid, and we left. I didn't leave a tip - if I could have left a negative tip, I would have. It takes truly awful service for me to not leave a tip, but this experience more than qualified.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this one other point: there were a lot of Italian-looking people at the restaurant. I took that as a good sign that the food was authentic. As the evening wore on, I couldn't help but notice the attention lavished on the people who looked to be of Italian descent - their tables got multiple visits throughout their meal, they were served immediately, and many were greeting with enthusiastic hand-shakes at the door. Everyone else, us included, were treated like we were intruders at a family gathering. Il Centro has many regulars it seems, but I'm certainly not going to be one of them.

Maybe if you're Italian you'll have had a completely different dining experience and enjoy this restaurant, but I'll never go back there again.

Italian Perfection, HIdden Away. It may be small, and it may be in an unlikely location at the end of a dingy strip mall a few doors down from Battery World, not far off Macleod Trail near Chinook Centre, but this place is a cozy, authentic, mouthwatering Italian haven that the CBC's John Gilchrist calls one of his favourites. My second visit for lunch, this time with my family, confirmed my initial impressions from a year ago: for artisan pizza, expect to be delighted. Be sure to try the calamari and tiramisu!
