Sylvesters

The staff were very nice and accommodating. Considering we turned up 15mims before closing and there was a long queue already there before us. They reaussured us that they will stay until we are all served and cooked fresh fish in front of us. They were very lovely to our special needs young person, treating him kindly and very helpfully and cheerfully. Mum says some of the chips were overcooked and crispy, hence the 4 stars and the price was a bit much for that, but I like crispy chips!

We waited in a long line for the freshest cod fish and chips, oh boy, the food is worth the wait, the very best fish and chips, perfectly battered, cod is super fresh and huge(did I say huge), the curry sauce is so tasty, I also tried sausage, it was soooo good. My advice is to pick up your order, in summer months maybe by 5:30pm there will not be a line, then sit next to the harbor, then just enjoy, you will not regret!

I was last here in 2018 and at that time I considered it to be serving the best fish I’d ever eaten. Couldn’t wait to return and finally did so on Saturday the 4th of June. What a shock I got. I asked for haddock and chips. The girl serving warned me the haddock was frozen but the cod was fresh. I went for cod instead. She should’ve also warned me that the chips were also frozen and no longer hand cut. £9.30 for cod and McCain chips. I took them to a bus shelter to eat as it was raining and the Champ was closed. As expected the frozen chips were big and chunky with no texture apart from a crusty shell and mashed potato style inside. Just like Wetherspoon! I’ve never had bought in chips from a chippy before and hope I never will again. The fish was overcooked and chewy. The batter was crispy, light and tasty. The best thing about the meal. Sylvester’s have totally lost the will to live and now lack the pride in their product I witnessed 4 years ago. What a terrible experience. I will never return.
