If you are a margarita lover, you MUST ask for a Steve! That’s what they call it. You won’t be disappointed. Also, they have the best street style tacos. I love this little place.

I have no idea why they have good reviews. The food was awful. I only ate 3 bites of the "cheese" enchilada and it wasn't even warm. No flavor. My friends ate only a few bites of their food as well. The margaritas are like slushies. I've had better Margaritas at a fast food called Taco Cabana. There are plenty of very good Mexican food in Tyler and some are extremely reasonable in price. We will NEVER go to Don Juan's again. We still can't figure out why it was crowded the night we went.

Great authentic Mexican food. Food was fresh and the hot sauce spicy. My wife got tacos and they was very good. Portions are big and will fill you up. We will definitely come back.

Good food and fun place to eat. But verrrry very crowded and loud. If you like that kind of thing and that wouldn't bother you it's a great place to eat, but if your looking for a quiet booth to have a relaxing conversation pick somewhere else. Staff was attentive and kind. Looking forward to going again!

This seems crazy. Okay, I eat here all the time. I don't have a vehicle and there are a few places within walking distance and they actually have some good items.

But I give One Star and for this reason:

They advertise an order of tortillas is Five in an order, or a double order of Ten. But constantly I order a small order and they only bring me four.

I asked one of the managers about it and she lied and said "Oh we only give four to an order"

They are total liars and that's not the only time I've been stiffed by this crowd. Lots of young people working there who don't give a damn. I'm a young person but sometimes young people don't have good service skills. This isn't a crowd I like to deal with but it's one of the few restaurants I don't mind going in.

Decent. Habla English? No!. Before I give my mixed review of this place, let me just say that if they were in my home town, I'd likely patronize the place occasionally.

The atmosphere is fun; the service seems to be decent; and the food is fine.

I went to the downtown square location on a mid-afternoon, found a table and was promptly served a paltry basket of chips and two souffle-cups for salsa. It's on the house, so I shouldn't complain. But, c'mon. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the other 5,000 Mexican restaurants that serve more than a handful of chips at a time, along with actual bowls for the salsa. Not a deal breaker, though.

The Service
The server, albeit polite, had very little command of the English language. Furthermore, he had what appeared to be meth teeth. I'm not one to judge. His oral hygiene is his business, but it's far from appetizing when your waiter starts talking and you're drawn to the black teeth in his mouth. Otherwise, he was polite (the two times I saw him). But there was still that language barrier -- which resulted in me inadvertently buying a fish taco platter and two chicken tacos (I ordered steak tacos).

The Food
The fish in the fish tacos seemed to be sauteed in garlic butter, and they were good. They were served alongside some purple cabbage, tomato slices and a small plate of sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. The cilantro was nowhere to be found, and I didn't bother asking for it. Corn tortillas (for soft tacos) should be steamed, but these were fried slightly. Not the way to do it, but, still, with some cabbage and (nicely hot) green salsa, the fish tacos were pretty good.

Ditto on the corn tortillas for the chicken tacos. I had mine with avocado. After a bite and the realization that I was eating chicken, I sent the order back for steak tacos to-go, as the fish tacos and (average tasting) rice filled me up, Someone will be taking leftover tacos for lunch tomorrow.

I think, with a little improved communication, I could really like this place. The red and green salsas were exceptionally good. The food -- all of it -- seemed freshly made. Next time I'm in Tyler, I'm going to try this place again.

Don Juan's on the Square

This is a cute little place located downtown on the square in the heart of Tyler. The place is pretty lively with the upper room being an apparently popular place for the younger crowd. The downstairs is festively decorated and very family friendly....

Red and green sauces were excellent. Plenty of spice. Had the Don Juan plate. Very very good and under $10! Highly recommend. Parking around the square sucks on a Saturday night.

Definitely on the list of regular places to eat here, I'd say we eat at Don Juans on the square once a week. We like to go Wednesdays for dollar tacos, and the pork Guisado, another Wednesday special, is quite good. There are a couple aspects of this place that drive me crazy, but like someone who's become a good friend, I find the overall quality of their company outweighs the annoying quirks.
1. The quality of the meat shifts, from excellent to gristle-fest from dish to dish.
2. When they are on, they are spot on in terms of service. We usually try to sit in a section of someone we know, but we occasionally get someone else. When the service is in one of those spotty times, you may find yourself waiting. It doesn't happen often, but when it does...
Also, look for the signature dishes, they are the true strength of this place. The standard fare tastes pretty much like everywhere else, but the Don Juan specials are remarkable. And that's why we keep going back.

HOT PLATE!!!. Don't worry about that here!

The atmosphere is festive, the people are friendly and the food is good. BUT, the food is NOT HOT.....................!

We were there on a Saturday during the peak time and the place was full of diners. I understand that food has to be prepared in advance but who wants barely warm enchiladas, rice and beans? I guess most Tylerites because they keep coming back.

I am a twice a month semi-regular but I will give it a few months before I return to see if the temperature of the food improves.

Decent cheap Mexican food, great daily specials, queso dip made with real cheese (no velveta in this joint). Not open for the late night crowd. Try to hit it midday when it's mostly empty due to end of lunch rush and before dinner rush: service is more attentive and fewer chances of screaming children that frequent dollar taco Wednesday's. Cheap drinks. Great for casual night out.

NOT Tex-Mex. This is not Tex-Mex food. (Try El Charro's for that.) This is truly Mexican food. You won't find yellow American cheese spread over everything.
