Cubby's

The location is sketchy at night. I wouldn't eat their cooked food, and I've never seen their soda fountain nozzles off for cleaning; mold easily grows in them. The fresh grocery items seem good and last a normal amount of time. I buy gallons of milk here and they taste normal. Boxed/dry goods seem fresh enough; cereal, spaghetti sauce, snacks, all seem good. Frozen goods in the cases, this is questionable. Closed package items like Jimmy Dean's Breakfast Sandwiches had freezer burn inside the package. To me, and I do not know if this is fact, but that means they thawed a bit and condensation/moisture got inside and refroze. I didn't care for the taste of these and they're an item I've eaten from other places (years ago) and enjoyed them. It's a convenience store, so it is very expensive. A mid-size jar of Hellman's mayo was ±$10 ... I left that on the shelf. The small individual sized Marie Callendars frozen microwave dinners, ±$6. That said, I work 70 hours per week at times, and I appreciate them being open nearly 24/7.

This is my favorite place to go! I stop in maybe every other day to get some breakfast and even though I do nothing to make myself particularly memorable, they treat me like I'm very memorable to them! Robert has gone above and beyond for me, without me even asking and the cashiers have never been anything but kind. I can't remember everyone's names, but Betty is so wonderful and Meaghan is always awesome, just to name a few. The whole store has a unique community/neighborhood market vibe that I don't see anywhere else.

The basic description on this location of what a Cubby’s is (something like “gas station and convenience store selling fried chicken and deli sandwiches”) is probably right for most of their locations, but this place is completely different! They are a complete grocery store, small but with a wide variety of expected grocery store items, including fresh vegetables and fruit, dairy products, condiments, baking supplies, and a full meat counter with things like steaks, fish, shrimp, marinated chicken. They apparently even make their own brats. If you live in the downtown area, you know it seems there are no convenient grocery stores, but this one looks like it will be just fine for 90% of my grocery needs. Also, I had great and friendly service today from Traci and JR.

Good place for sundries, groceries, meat, and produce. Cubby's selection is a tier just above of what you'd call a convenience store. So if you don't have time or the will to cross the river or all the way to Elmwood for groceries this is a great place. It is downtown though, so even though they try, there's lots of loiters. Be careful at night.
