Good cafe with great coffee and decent sandwiches. The tables, interior and atmosphere are a little spartan and not as hip as some other places on Maling Road, but the better quality of coffee more than makes up for that.

One of my favourite coffee places and always high on the standard. Pour over coffee can be a surprise. Food is also delicious. You can tell how much efforts they've put in - from coffee to the sause in toast sandwiches. The quality is consistent. Definitely a regular place to visit.

Great food, generous portions and economical prices! Most meals were under $20. Seems like a recent change in ownership, menu has Korean influence but the coffee remains fabulous. We ordered Smiley Face kids bacon and eggs ($8), scrambled eggs with cheese croissant ($8), medley of mushrooms Monterey cheese on scrambled eggs with outstanding truffle mayo ($17), FULL sized caramel milkshake ($6) with just right sweetness not lathered with syrup, great hot flat white but the highlight was the house made sweet potato fries served like nachos, with diced tomatoes, avocado, 2 types of cheese blowtorched giving lovely smokey flavours. Spicy mayo was requested on the side as daughter doesn't eat spicy. Family friendly. Highly recommended!!
10 June 2019 update : the sweet potato fries no longer served like nachos as pictured. They are plain served with tomato sauce.

Building was from 1800s so naturally liked the architecture and ambience of it. I found the serving staff very friendly and helpful in terms of deciding the order.
Menu is not Halal so I don't have much options to choose from :). So I ordered coffee and Fried eggs on toast. Liked both of them. I can visit them again for brunch as it is very near to my office

Came in just for a coffee but decided to have a quick bite. The sandwich was delicious and I loved having that touch of mustard between the ham and the melted cheese. So simply yet so tasty. And all of this was complemented by a great latte. Prices are a tad expensive but I was happy with my meal so really can't complain.

During a short, but delicious, period of my life, I was working at a school around the corner from The Maling Room.
In brief:
The pros:
- Great coffee
- Great food
- Relaxed, calming ambience
- Sassy baristas
The cons:
- My expanding waistline, and general dissatisfaction with other cafe food
If you live in the area, and haven't been to The Maling Room, then whack yourself in an envelope and post yourself down.

Literally waited 5 years to have this passionfruit cake again and it’s so worth it 🤣🤣 Be sure to come after 1pm however because you’d be disappointed to find out it’s not available till then! <br/><br/>The cake is so soft but yet spongey and not too sweet, the whip cream is absolutely decadent and amazing and the passionfruit icing... my lawd, it was heavenly! Such an amazing cake and worth the high price of $6.50<br/><br/>The service is also really friendly and nice! <br/><br/>If you’re ever around the area and just abit peckish for some tea, Ruby T’s is great!

Dropped in to grab a passion fruit sponge - we’ve had them previously and they are very good (if pricey). Unfortunately we found out they only have them available from around 12.30pm onwards so had to settle for a slice of lemon tart instead. I am sorry to say this has the dubious honour of being the most expensive slice of takeaway cake my wife and I have ever had at $9.90 for a very normal sized slice. The lemon tart tasted very nice, but I would strongly urge them to reconsider their prices if they want to stay in business. The interior is quaint but a little tired. The lady we dealt with seemed friendly. However, given the pricing, I’m not sure we will be returning (and we’re locals). I hope they listen to this feedback.

Ruby T’s looks very outdated. Definitely needs a clean. One of the salt and pepper shakers were also broken. There was also a moth on the table cloth and when I showed the staff member they didn’t do anything about it. They didn’t move the moth.... I didn’t feel like eating there since I didn’t know how clean the place was and how hygienic the food would be considering there was a moth there.

Oh! How I would have liked to try the Passionfruit Sponge - alas my breakfast companion and I were too early. I suspect I would have loved it. <br/><br/>'Ruby' apparently did a great deal of work for charity back in the day, so he grand-daughter (if memory serves) set this cafe up in her honour. <br/><br/>This little cafe is quite olde worlde-y, and I like it for that alone. I love that tea comes in proper, traditional tea cups, I love the tea spoons are exactly that - even down to the little teapot at the other end. I appreciated the real embroidered cloths. If I didn't know better I could have thought this place had been here many decades ago. <br/><br/>This is one of the quieter cafes on the strip, perhaps because of it's lack of modern styling. A couple of people having their morning cuppa, the coffee machine was certainly a nod to present day, and the Cappuccino was enjoyed by my companion who is just getting 'into' coffee. <br/><br/>I chose the Prince of Wales tea - which somehow seemed the appropriate choice given our surrounds - and it was a good cup of tea, very good. Add to this, that when I requested a top up of hot water (which in no way diminished the quality of the tea after two cups had already gone from the pot) and it came in the sweetest jug befitting the style of this place that really fits in so well in Maling Road.<br/><br/>The straightforward menu left both of us in no doubt what we wanted; Benedict for me, choosing the bacon over the ham or smoked salmon. Wilted spinach, perfect poached eggs, properly cooked bacon on lightly toasted and very fresh focaccia bread. I can't say for sure if the hollandaise is house made, I suspect it is, it was fine.<br/><br/>Opposite me the Smashed Avocado and Feta with extras of two free range poachies and smoked salmon on toasted focaccia was tucked into with gusto.<br/><br/>Friendly staff, a lovely looking selection of cakes, treats and savoury meals like pot pies and lasagne (with bechemel - yay). As I mentioned, I would have delighted in trying the Passionfruit Sponge - a childhood delight of mine, and certainly would consider the Sunday Lunch, like the good old days at home one day. This is familiar food cooked as if it was your aunt in the kitchen. <br/><br/>This cafe calls itself a 'coffee and tea house', and they certainly do their tea well - real tea, loose leaf, in a proper pot with a cute little strainer within. The breakfasts we tried were good to very good. Service to we two new customers was more like old friends, and the regulars were treated like family that you like! Newspapers to read, books, pretty gift cards for sale (we got one), a charming change from the new style cafs popping up everywhere. Although technically not anything to do with the cafe, having a gorgeous independent book shop immediately opposite is a big bonus in my books.

Consistently first class, quality meals!<br/><br/>Ruby T’s is our favourite “go to” cafe when we need a satisfying, fresh and quality lunch, with lovely “Olde Worlde” charm.<br/><br/>Once more, in need of a break, some peace and quiet and an great place for conversation, Carole and I went to Ruby T’s yet again. As Carole always enjoys the restaurant, (no more than me, I might add), she was delighted to go.<br/><br/>We have been there in many occasions over the last 5 -6 years and it is always the same, in terms of its ambience and food quality. We both find it a very welcoming cafe with Pam leading her youthful team, meeting the customer’s requirements.<br/><br/>There is always excellent tea and coffee, together with a tastefully done selection of beautifully fresh ribbon sandwiches and fillings, cakes, pies, sausage rolls, vanilla slices, (you do need to try one of these - they are just great), and exquisite sponges filled with fresh cream and passionfruit icing. It would be difficult not to find something to tempt you for lunch from the menu - you can be sure it is fresh and high quality. <br/><br/>There are several other menus choices of more substantial meals, including breakfast favourite of eggs of all types with bacon, etc and also frittatas to name a few. Carole often enjoys the calamari - a great choice. Me - I’m a firm ribbon sandwich aficionado - always a pleasure with a cup of tea and a passionfruit sponge!<br/><br/>All of the food presented is cooked on the premises to ensure the freshness that is so enjoyable.<br/><br/>Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality presented to you. Service is very good, prompt and very efficient.<br/><br/>Carole and I just can’t help ourselves, we keep going back; so consistent with its lovely food quality and freshness, so very important. Considering our numerous visits, it is very surprising to read a few adverse comments written by some. This has not been our experience at all. Quite the contrary, its high quality never varies. <br/><br/>And yes, we are looking forward to our next lunch at Ruby T's.

ok, this place is not great. In fact the poor experience is what spurred me to create a zomato review. I have come here twice, once for a quick takeaway coffee and the other time for a sit down devonshire tea. The food is very mediocre, not bad, not good, but definitely something I could have created at home, hence why the steep prices cannot be justified. The place is quaint enough, but a little grubby with stained table clothes. A price reduction and a quick clean up of the shop would do wonders. The concept is wonderful (a time warp back to the better days of English tea and scones) and I do enjoy the beautiful crockery. The sit down meal was far better than the takeaway, which was just abysmal. I waited nearly twenty five minutes, I get that it was a busy time, but 25 minutes for a sub par takeaway coffee is ridiculous. Although the coffee did improve for the sit down meal (the first barista I had was an older woman) I did enjoy it, but consistency would be nice! Although the feedback might seem harsh, I realy think that some tweaks here and there could exponentially improve this café and I hope that they take notice of external reviews because the concept is there, but the delivery isn't.

RUBBISH!!!!!!!!!! the food is overly priced and very very ordinary. The sponge cakes, which the staff profess have made a reputation for the business, the only positive on these was the icing.<br/>The scrambled eggs looked microwaved and the portion for the big breakfast was small and expensive. The bacon had an unusual flavour. Dusty, dirty, the carpets full of crumbs and the table cloths full of previous patrons' food. Service, well, the ladies behind the bar were too busy talking about their weekend and night they were to experience, so don't expect too much from this place. Reluctantly, we ate and left.....Never again!!!

Went here the other day with my mother and had a Devonshire tea to share. Scones were served with fresh cream and jam, a perfect afternoon delight.<br/><br/>In terms of the interior of the cafe, there are slight improvements that could be made, especially the paper coverings- the lace looks much better, given the cafe is striving for an old English tea room aesthetic. <br/><br/>One thing that really spoiled our trip was overhearing the owner reprimand one of the wait staff... It made the experience a little bit uncomfortable. It seems like the employees are trying to work well despite the place not being run efficiently. Kudos to the staff for being attentive even in the busy periods. <br/><br/>I'm not sure if I would come here again, there is nothing outstanding that compels me to do so.

Pam is a great hostess. Ruby Ts has the best French Toast in Town! would highly recommend this café for breakfast, lunch or arvo tea. The scones, jam and cream or the passion fruit sponges are a must. This is a lovely old fashioned style café with lots of atmosphere, a must stop when shopping in Canterbury. They also do a great old fashioned Sunday roast that is definitely value for money.

Breakfast here reminded us of eating at a cheap motel. Toast and marmalade: a thin slice of white toast (not the wholemeal toast listed on the menu) accompanied by two of those little catering packs of cheap butter, almost melted, and some cheap commercial marmalade. The coffee was tolerable. We haven't had a meal like this in Melbourne for decades and won't return.

Stopped by for breakfast - which was an OK, if unimaginative, muesli with fruit. Coffee was good though. A positively geriatric atmosphere, reminded me of all those UK cafes stuck in the time warp of 1950's holiday towns. Probably won't go again, with so much better options along Maling Road.

Cold bacon, atomic tomato, brown lettuce = a bad lunch. Bad day at ruby t's. Worst BLT I have ever eaten. It came toasted (didnt want that). The tomato was atomicly hot and lettuce hot and brown. The scrambled egg was<br/>Bland and bacon side order was stone cold. Very un impressive. Decor is a weird mix but the food pretty good.. This café has the strangest mix of photos and tapestry and flowers you may see in a café but the Devonshire tea was nice. We ordered two Devonshire teas, the shared pot of tea was large and fresh tea leaves used. Scones were freshly baked, tasty and good size. Unfortunately there was very little jam to serve with them. When we asked they happily offered more so not big deal. Some staff are very pleasant some need to improve but overall it was a very pleasant stop on Maling Road.
