Safeway at English Bay is a great supermarket with a variety of offerings for both locals and tourists. This Safeway location closed on August 31st. Sad to see it go after over 50 years in this location. Almost every building on the north side of Davie St from Jervis to Bidwell is slated for demolition, with one major tower at Jervis St already well under way. Three 116 year old houses were taken down to make way for this condo tower. Staff at Safeway did not know if a new store would return to the new development. Update - March 2021 A new larger Safeway has opened ( several months ago now) on the same site, with its own Starbucks and free underground parking. Entrance still at Davie and Cardero. The store is more up market than the old one. A BC Liquor store has also reopened just down the hill as before.

I've lived in this neighborhood for years and have numerous options for where to do my grocery shopping, but I've always prefered Safeway on Davie St. They have a friendly and knowledgeable staff and good prices. The place is a part of the community and I will be very sad when it closes at the end of August.
