Jake's Place

Interesting place to eat, with some quirks… We sat in the first dining room with the brick wall, but the newer space next to us looked really cool too, they even have a bar. I ordered the black bean burger which was delicious, the fries are twisty crisps of deliciousness, other people at the table are enjoying their food. Then a gentleman from the kitchen sets up food prep at the dining table next to us and starts up a political conversation. That’s not really my vibe for a meal out and I wonder about their sanitation practices. Good food though!

Great stopping place in Ashland, VA. Jakes Place heading west on Rt 54, after you leave the interstate restaurant area and right as you leave town. Another locally owned restaurant. Fast friendly service, and some good food. Shrimp night. Lightly seasoned big shrimp with hush puppies and cole slaw. Piggy Pups (hush puppies filled with pulled pork). Pulled pork and fries. All good, reasonable prices, and would definitely go back!

The atmosphere is outstandingly excellent, they certainly achieved that countryside vibe which it appears to me to be the effect they were aiming for. The place looks very neat and cozy. Service, accordingly, lives up to one’s expectations and does not disappoint. However, the food was not exactly what I would consider delicious(?). Perhaps one reason for this may be the fact that I do not like heavily sweetened (or at all sweetened??) beans. So this, of course, is my preference and some may disagree and in fact enjoy it a lot. But then again, the flavor profiles of the entire food is just altered in southern cuisine to a tone that I cannot quite understand. However, despite the 4 stars, it’s a place to certainly visit if you live in Ashland for a period.

Everything about this meal was delicious. Highly recommend the bacon potato salad. You may not always be able to get a soft-shelled crab sandwich, but if you ever can see it on the menu, go for it. Of the barbecue types tried amongst our party, my favorite was the brisket. And, their sauce is great. Tip: Plan ahead if you're interested in dessert. Chances are, you won't have room for us.
