The Square Cow

Updated August 2023. Sunday roast. Five people. And oh my. Huge plates of food, great tasting meat veg and yorkies. Great banter, kind people, good music, fun atmosphere. Highly recommended. Originally...No-one does food on Mondays it seems except for a few places. So Serendipity took my wife and I to this place on a whim. A quick phone call whilst driving to check they did food, table sorted and job done. Chili prawn starter brilliant. Jan and eggs good, and the pie was fab: proper pie, crusty all the way round, a "sufficiency"of gravy, roast carrots and parsnips great and they were very easy swapping the mash for yummy chips. Parking easy... It's free after 1700 so no worries there. Nice place, nice people.

What a great pub. All that a 'local' should be; the regular customers mixing easily and in a friendly manner with visitors. A great range of drinks, cheerful, friendly service, competitive pricing, an historic building maintained well without destroying the 'old' atmosphere. A great 'secret' courtyard and a nice outdoor area to the front of the pub allowing customers to while-away-the-hours watching all that goes on in a very busy town square. Recommend a visit ... even 2 or 3!

We were probably the annoying type of customers ordering hot chocolate to takeaway on a Saturday night in a pub… also asking for vegan milks and asking for extra hot as we had a long drive. And changing orders etc etc. However the staff member- sorry we didn’t catch his name- but he was maybe the manager was so warm and friendly. He cared for our drinks and explained that we should be careful because of the cups on our drive. On our recent travels we have encountered so Many unfriendly or untrained staff which can make the nicest interior designed place feel cold, unwelcoming and confusing. However in this authentic English pub, despite not particularly modern - we could have stayed for hours feeling comfortable and welcomed. Thank you for this lovely experience! People make places! Please keep training and encouraging your staff to be this attentive and engaging.
