I was given a voucher for a complimentary sushi platter and took it into work (before the whole work from home thing). There was so much there it fed a bunch of us and it was really prettily presented too, great idea for corporate catering.

Original review
We were invited to Tokyo Sushi Kitchen tonight a new Japanese place conveniently located a short walk from my office. I absolutely loved the impressive array of sushi that greeted us upon our arrival and the salmon sashimi was delightfully fresh.

Not only did we have the opportunity to try sushi but also some hot food my favourite of which was the chicken teriyaki- that sauce was simply magnificent. I also made a diy poke bowl and chose from a variety of yummy ingredients to create a really tasty combo of salmon, avocado, corn, pineapple and tomato on a soba noodle base.
I love the idea that you can get takeaway sushi at night too #winning

4.5
Ordered some sushi platters from this place - had some vegetarian options and also some for seafood lovers which had cooked tuna, prawns etc.

Had a work branch function and three platters were more than enough! It came with soy sauce and ginger on the side. Everyone was really happy with the portions and loved the taste of the sushi!

If you are really desperate for jap food come here. Unfortunately I wouldn't come again. The broth had no depth and the noodles were rice noodles. Chicken katsu could have come with some Mayo. Wouldn't come again. They should take ramen off the menu

The menu looks amazingly enticing. But the pork ramen I had & the 4 sushi rolls I tried to eat was no where close to even be what it's supposed to be. Ramen soup tasted like instant noodle soup & the sushi rice in the sushi had no seasoning of vinegar or sugar or salt. Very disappointing.

My friends and I had stomachache later in the day after having their sushi :( Hygiene needs to be improved. I saw the ingredients are left next to the sink with other chemicals and detergents. Maybe it was an alarm sign and we shouldn’t have eaten that at the first start :(

Very nice food and even better price! Just be careful when you order since some of the plates have similar names and you may get something different! The best thing is just point what you want!

A wide selection of Japanese meals, ranging from basic sushi rolls, poke bowls, to hot food of bento, udon, ramen to rice meals.

It is suitable whether you want a light or heavy meal. There are not many seats so either be prepared to take away or to wait if you want to eat in.

The ramen soup is just nice and the katsu (fried chicken or pork) was made beautifully. The unagi don(rice) came with a good size piece of eel and some salad on top. What I like about it is that it was made just nice. The eel meat was tender and not too much sauce was on it - made to perfection.

Price to value ratio for the hot food considering the taste and quality are really good.
Recommended for anyone enjoying simple, no frills japanese food.

Traditional ramen
Soup
Was just right thickness and not too salty but enough umami taste, brown color.
Noodles
Wasn't the handmade thin noodle so I was a bit sad(coz I'm the big fan of Japanese thin handmade ramen noodles) but price wise, it's understandable
Garnishes
I loved the pork, not dried and just soft! Also not smelly for me. If u don't like strong ginger, you better to mention it when u order but I like ginger so it was a perfect combination.
Overall
I would love to go back for ramen :)) it was hard to find a good ramen place in Melb but I think I found it.

This Japanese restaurant geared towards quick bites and takeaways. They have a small number of main dishes and also sell handroll sushis on the go. The Katsu Curry and chicken Karaage were average in terms of flavour although the meat are juicy. Not plenty of seats in the shop

TSK is my local South Melbourne sushi/Japanese joint. The sushis are fresh and there are plenty of variety to chose from ie; hand rolls, nigiris, bento boxes. On my recent visit I tried a few small dishes, poke bowl and ramen. All the smaller dishes were great. Nice crispy juicy chicken kaarage, crispy and gooey takoyaki and flavoursome gyozas. The ramen was good, a light tonkatsu broth it is full of umami flavours.
The poke bowl was great, fresh salmon, chunky avo pieces and I loved the additional of kimchi.
Overall a great dine in or takeaway Japanese option in South Melbourne. Good fresh sushi and lots of other options to chose from, big plus for also being on Zomato Gold 👌

Service: Hit and miss. I have been contacting the owners through instagram as I was fortunate enough to win a giveaway! They were very accommodating and really nice about the whole situation. However, when I got to the venue and mentioned my name and pick up, the server just pointed and asked if my platter was on display (which it was). She then just told me I can pick it up, didnt really show any gratitude, and let me be. While I do understand I didnt have to pay (and am very grateful to have won), I would appreciated a little more service.

Food:
Maki platter 3.5/5 - definitely satisfied my sushi cravings. Since it was something that I won, I didnt want to be fussy and was unsure if I was allowed to choose what maki I wanted, so I let TSK decide. I was happy that they gave me fresh salmon and california roll as I love crab meat! It also came with cucumber roll, chicken teriyaki, tuna, and veg roll. My set came with 48 rolls, but I think the original came with more. Nonetheless, while seasoned nicely, the rice was slightly overcooked and was more on the softer/mushy side. Filling to rice ratio for the most part was good, but some of the flavours were overpowered by the rice.

I did enjoy the fresh salmon (always) and the california roll with the mayo was delightful. Tuna was good as well.

The teriyaki chicken was a little dry and lacked teriyaki flavour, and the veggie roll (with tofu curd sheets, carrots, and cucumber) were good but slightly also lacking in flavour.

Overall a good platter of maki that will satisfy your tastebuds if you wanted maki. Compared to other fast service sushi, TSK does bring in good flavours and fresh sashimi (from what I could taste from the rolls).

A small shop in South Melbourne with contemporary outfit. Not many seats indicated people likes to takeout, instead of dine in. Salmon sashimi is average (good texture in mouth but nothing special about the flavour), katsu curry, especially the curry sauce, could use some improvement.

The casual dining in South Melbourne that you do not want to miss! Recently visited Tokyo Sushi Kitchen in South Melbourne and we were really impressed. From the decor to the items on the menu and the food itself, everything is so fresh and they are made to order.

They have a poke bowl menu where you can customize your own bowl and pick the ingredients and condiments you would like to have in your bowl. This is a fun concept and you get to mix and match or maybe jazz up your poke bowl. The ingredients were really fresh and I like how its made to order. We had the tuna poke bowl and salmon poke bowl and really loved it, they had a good range of sauces you can choose from.

The menu had a good range from entrees, sushi, poke bowls and bento boxes. There is something in there for everyone! We sampled a few dishes on the menu and really enjoyed it.

We sampled on the entrees and could not fault any of them as they were so good. Love how they are all made to order. The karaage chicken was different and the batter used made it really light and crispy. The salmon sashimi was really fresh as they get them delivered fresh daily. The skewers and the gyozas were really good too.

Moving on to mains, we had the curry katsu don and teriyaki salmon don. The Curry Katsu don was cooked nicely and the curry flavours were good. The teriyaki salmon don was cooked to perfection and the outer layer was crispy.

Loved the casual dining concept as it’s good for a quick meal before a night out or a simple meal when you’re around the area. The service was exceptional and the staff were really friendly. It does make a difference when they are big on the customer experience and the focus on ensuring that the customers enjoy their meal.

** 2.5**

TSK known as Tokyo Sushi Kitchen is a Japanese restaurant located in South Melbourne. They have smaller food court branches around Melbourne but this is their first actual restaurant. When you walk into the restaurant they have sushi counter where you can buy takeaway sushi and a poke bowl stand. We came on a weekday night and it wasn’t busy at all.

We started with some poke bowls. There’s are pre-made options and also a choose your own option. We ordered the TSK Sashimi Salmon and the TSK Sashimi Tuna. I personally really liked that TSKSashimi Salmon. I enjoyed that they put kimchi in it. They have soba noodles as well which I thought was a very unique idea. I do prefer it with soba noodles! The flavours worked really well together!

Next we had some entree dishes. We had the karaage chicken which I didn’t really enjoy. It was really hard and dry and it wasn’t pleasant to eat, correct me if I’m wrong but was it chicken breast? It was really dry.

The next thing we had was the yakatori with a teriyaki-like sauce. It was quite average. The meat was a bit dry. I think they should perfect the way the cook their meats.

Yay takoyaki time!! I love takoyaki and I can’t never go wrong with takoyaki so this definitely hit the spot. It’s probably my favourite thing I’ve had that night - it satisfied my cravings!

We also tried the salmon sashimi and the salmon nigiri platter. I thought the salmon sashimi was really fresh and delicious! On the other hand the salmon nigiri was a bit stale also the rice was hard and unpleasant to eat.

This was probably my favourite dish of the night, the okonomiyaki. I usually don’t like okonomiyaki however this was delicious!! I’ve had it at a market once in Japan and I didn’t seem to like it but this one might have changed my mind. It was tasty, flavoursome, it wasn’t dry nor doughy. I’ll defs recommend this dish if you go here. It’s also a decent size as well!

Lastly we had the traditional pork ramen. The broth lacked flavour for me but my partner didn’t mind it. I thought the noodles were a bit dense. They tasted like the packet noodles tbh.

The service was exceptional! They were extremely friendly and very helpful and attentive.

Overall, there were hits and misses. I liked some of the dishes like the poke bowl, okonomiyaki, takoyaki and the sashimi. The thing was that it wasn’t anything special. It’s been around a month since I ate there and I haven’t thought of going back. It’s quite standard food court packaged kinda food. In saying so, I think this place is perfect for lunches if you work near by especially with the poke bowls. Thank you for having us and thank you for the great hospitality.

(Invitational)

Points for: healthy options, good value express Japanese

Seems like TSK have a few express branches around Melbourne, but this South Melbourne shop is a flagship, with dining tables and dinner hours.
The restaurant is bright, clean and modern, with friendly staff.

I enjoyed their poke range – it’s quick and healthy(ish) and you can make your own. The sesame and spicy mayo dressings were particularly tasty.

Takoyaki was made fresh and had a nice chunk of octopus inside.

Chicken Karaage was also fresh, with a nice crisp coating and juicy chicken pieces.

Yakitori was tasty, and had decent char from the grill, but the sauce was a little heavy-handed for me, so I thought it was a tad salty.

Okonomiyaki was also made fresh – more doughy than cabbagy, and a similar combination of flavours to takoyaki.

Traditional pork ramen was underwhelming. Manufactured egg noodles overcooked. Porky stock, could do with tare seasoning. Chashu had a lot of fat (I know it’s pork belly, but it’s quite a lot). I would use a different noodle, watch the cooking time, and experiment with tare.

In the end though, TSK South Melbourne is a decent option for express Japanese. It’s probably hovering between a 3-4 for me, but that hardly matters with Zomato these days.

Thanks, team!

Overall score: 16/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5)
in 5 words: Japanese fast food option here!
*
💬 review: Upon entering, I loved the clean and modern deco which sets TSK apart from other traditional Jap eateries. However, we were surprised to learn that we had to walk across the street on a cold winter evening as they had no bathrooms.

As for the meal, we enjoyed the octopus ball! we made the mistake of ordering okonomiyaki - which had relative similar seasoning and taste. I enjoyed the okonomiyaki - the pancake was equal parts crispy and chewy. As for our mains, while food was presented beautifully, we felt something lacking in our ramen - perhaps the pork broth was not flavourful enough compared to ramen specialist stores. i still think TSK is a great option if you want a quick Japanese meal at south melbourne.
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️

TSK stands for Tokyo Sushi Kitchen, just recently opened their youngest branch in Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. This young Japanese restaurant offers an array selection of Japanese dishes such as, sushi, poke to ramen, don, udon and bento. We’re glad to be invited by TSK South Melbourne to experience their food.

Yay: TSK Sashimi Salmon, TSK Sashimi Tuna, Gyoza, Takoyaki, Yakitori, Kaarage Chicken, Unagi Don, Tempura Prawns & Vege
Nay: Noodle ramen was slightly overcooked, tempura vege was slightly greasy.

Great service. Was disappointed that our meals (Salmon Bento and Pork Ramen) were not served hot. The egg in the ramen was cooked perfectly but was too salty. The pork in the ramen had good flavour. The salmon in the bento could have been bigger for the price. Might try other dishes next time as it is a nice place to grab a quick bite. Very funky place decor and setup.

😱Lizzie’s first impression: a cute Japanese restaurant opened up on the busy street of Clarendon in South Melbourne and thank goodness it did.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I tried alot of dishes on the menu - all of which were delicious and tasty. It didn't help that I was super hungry so I was ready for a big feast.

First up were the entrees - I tried the chicken skewers, gyozas, takoyaki, fried chicken and some sashimi. I've never smelt chicken skewers this good before - it was marinated perfectly and was tender yet juicy and even has some char. What a pleasure it was to eat.

The gyozas, takoyaki and fried chicken were all cooked so well. Gyozas had a bit of char and tasted great with the sauce. The takoyakis I could clearly see the octopus in it which is rare to find and I've had my fair share of Takoyakis. The sashimi was fresh and tasted great.

I also tried the poke bowls and it was so fresh and tasty. Everything went well together especially with the seafood salad and they gave a generous amount of fresh tuna - I would say is in competition with Poked (my favourite poked bowl place).

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The only feedback I have is that the ramen was a little soft for my liking but the broth, amount of meats, and serving size was perfect.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: The staff were so friendly and welcoming - I almost didn't want to leave the restaurant. Great thing is they open late on week nights. I will definitely coming back.

TSK is a fantastic place to visit for a number of reasons. There is a really good selection of food on the menu to choose from that will satisfy anyone who walks through the door. You are greeted with a smile and friendly service which is so important these days. The quality of food is outstanding and every dish my friend and I had was just so delicious.

My friend and I tried many things from the menu, all equally as delicious as each other. The dumplings were so yummy with a beautiful texture, takoyaki was really good and made you wanting more! The kaarage chicken was 10/10, our salmon and tuna poke bowls were amazing and the katsu curry - see you later! Oh yeah and I forgot, the chicken yayatori, flame grilled and just so goooood.

Should you visit TSK? Yes definitely! I would like to thank Dennis and the team for the amazing visit. See you soon!

Tokyo Sushi Kitchen (TSK) is a chain of Japanese takeaway restaurants that serves traditional Japanese food across Melbourne. We went to the newly opened shop in South Melbourne which provides more seating and more of an eat-in dining experience.

We came here on a quiet night of the week but there were still ample customers and Uber Eats drivers walking in and out! We had a large selection of food include poke bowls, ramen, squid balls and karaage chicken. We had two Poké bowls - one with tuna and the sesame dressing and one with salmon with the spicy mayo dressing. Both poké bowls were vibrant and displayed a rainbow colour wheel of fresh veggies. The sauces were delicious (especially the spicy one!). The Karaage chicken was also one of my favourite dishes. The chicken was cooked to perfection and golden and crunchy on the outside. It also went beautifully with the aioli! Finally the ramen with the chicken broth was sensational! Absolutely full of flavour and extremely enjoyable.

The customer service was also exceptional. One of the staff members, in particular, was extremely welcoming and made sure our experience was perfect.

Thank you TSK!

From a range of sushi rolls to hot food like ramen and rice bowls you’ll definitely be in for a treat.

Our favourite was the customisable poke bowls with fresh tuna and salmon. The range of side dishes is also great and if you feel like something hearty try their tonkotsu ramen.

We were invited to TSK for dinner and we had the opportunity to try a number of their offerings. We visited on a cold and wet weeknight but the warm, stylish interior plus the welcoming owners made it a nice hot start. While we were there, they had many takeaway orders (a good sign!) - it added to the bustling atmosphere.

The crown for the night went to the poke bowls. Not only did they look attractive, they tasted fresh, had lots of great textures and were full of flavour. The next best item was the yakitori. The chicken was cooked to perfection and had a lovely smoky flavour. The sauce accompanying it was excellent. The takoyaki balls were delicious and so was the chicken karaage.

There were some minor quibbles. The gyozas were slightly burnt and the salmon in the salmon don was a tad over cooked.

TSK is a buzzing place and with a few exciting changes being planned for the future, things can only get better!

I was invited to dine at TSK South Melbourne with a friend to try their range of food options on their menu. TSK South Melbourne is a relatively new shop that has only been opened for 3 months.

TSK is short for Tokyo Sushi Kitchen. They have been around for 6 years and have opened up various shops in outer Melbourne suburbs, as well as Ballarat. However their new addition to South Melbourne seems to be well planned and thought through.

🔆LOCATION🔆
TSK South Melbourne is conveniently located in the heart of the Clarendon street food precinct on the corner of York Street. Great location, easy to find and a good size establishment with a few tables on the left hand side as you walk inside, and on the right walled bench seating.

The premise is of a very modern fit out with good lighting, Japanese writing on one wall, and cute black and white Japanese writing/images on another wall which makes you feel like you're . TSK is an up-market fast food take away with a nice casual atmosphere that one can enjoy if dining in.

🔆SERVICE🔆
Extremely friendly and helpful customer service during the evening. Les and Dennis were wonderful hosts and had lovely conversations with them.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

The menu has alot of different range of Japanese food available, however we were in for a surprise of a carefully selected variety of items:

Salmon Sashimi Poke
Tuna Sashimi Poke
Okonomiyaki - Japanese savoury pancake
Takoyaki (6 pieces) - Octopus balls served with bbq mayo and shaved bonito
Tempura Prawn and Vegetables
Yakitori - charcoaled grilled skewered chicken
Gyoza *6 pieces)- vegetable pan fried
Traditional Tonkotsu Ramen

🔆VERDICT🔆

The Poke bowls were of a very decent portion, I was almost full from eating all that. I had the tuna and the tuna was very fresh and delicious, the soba noodle and variety of toppings including the avocado, edamame, sweet corn with sesame dressing was refreshing. We really enjoyed the Poke because it was really fresh. You can see on their counter how neatly and clean their poke station is, well refrigerated and fresh. The only thing I would exclude is the seaweed salad, it just didn't seem to match well with the rest of the ingredients.

The Okonomiyaki was well cooked. I am used to seeing it come out as 1 whole round pancake, but they cut it up into 4 pieces on a plate topped with bonito flakes which was a very nice presentation. It was very tasty, light and fluffy.

My favourite would have to be the Gyoza! Simply delicious! The gyoza wrapping was super thin, the filling was fresh and can taste the cabbage with the nice crunch. It had just the right amount of flavour and the BEST thing is that there was no oil on the gyoza. So many places bring out gyoza that is super oily it just makes the overall taste off-putting. But TSK Gyoza is delicious!

My other favourite is the Tempura Prawn and vegetable. The batter was very light yet crunchy and the prawns was fresh and tasty. The vegetable tempura were all very tasty and it's my first time eating broccoli tempura which surprisingly I quite enjoyed it.

The chicken Yakitori was really tender and juicy, however the sauce was too salty/sweet. If the sauce can be slightly adjusted it would be a great dish!

The Tonkotsu Ramen was not bad, the pork broth was too light and the ramen was a tad over-cooked. The Pork belly peices were thick, juicy and delicious.

Overall it was a very lovely dining experience including great customer service.

Tokyo Sushi Kitchen is located on Clarendon Street in South Melbourne. With a funky fit out with wall art & neon signs, it’s a great casual dining space. We were invited to visit & check out the menu.

We were warmly welcomed by owner Dennis who opted to bring out a variety of dishes for us to try, a nice break from decision making.

We started with super colourful poké bowls filled with edamame, corn, soba noodles & salmon. I love a fresh & healthy option & we both enjoyed these, especially the sesame dressing.

Next came the entrees, takoyaki (octopus balls) gyoza & agedashi tofu. The gyoza were pan fried & delicious and the tofu was absolutely divine. My friend happily devoured the takoyaki in record time. The serving sizes of these entrees were extremely generous & we were pretty full by this stage.

The rice bowls were another healthy and tasty dish. Served with salad & grilled salmon or grilled chicken, we were both impressed with the presentation & freshness.

Dennis & the team at TSK were fantastic & the service was fast & friendly. TSK are also in the process of a new fit out to allow for more dine in seating as well as some extra additions to the menu & a liquor licence.

Definitely looking forward to going back to try the rest of the menu, ramen, udon noodles, katsu, sushi & sashimi. as we barely scratched the surface. Will also be interested in seeing the new fit out so that it’s more of a dining space. A big thank you to Dennis, Kelly & the team at TSK for your warm hospitality.

This is a great restaurant. It looks like a casual cafe style but the food is amazing! I was invited with my partner so I won’t comment on the service.

So what did we try? Initially we had some fresh tasty, healthy poke bowls, and they were soo good . Gosh what have I been missing?

The pork katsu was amazing! The pork was moist and cooked to perfection. It was incredible. The egg was great too. Yummo

Other highlights included the seafood okonomiyaki was full of prawns, and other seafood and it was delicious. The sauce wasn’t too sweet which was great. This was a must try.

The chicken curry had a nice Japanese curry flavour with a good hint of peppery spice.

The takoyaki was excellent, the balls were full of meat, and the dough was light and fluffy. Fantastic.

Another highlight was the panco crumbed oysters which were some of the best I’ve ever eaten. They were amazing. The crumb was crunchy, the oysters fresh and firm. Another must try!!

And finally the salmon sushimi was high quality, super fresh as salmon should be and it was delivered fresh each day!

They do a very reasonable take away w prices in the early to mid teens for dishes. The only thing missing was an ice cold ... bevvie but the owner assured me that they are getting Asahi soon hahaha.

And the place is getting a makeover to provide more seating inside so that’ll be something to look forward to.

Thanks to the owner for the opportunity to visit this place it’s definitely worth a visit!

We visited soon after the opening & were impressed with the food & service. Am sick at home today so ordered via Uber Eats for the family. Approx spend $64.80. TSK conformed the order, then promptly called to say they did not have staff to cook & could we cancel the order. Called Uber Eats to cancel, they said TSK has said they CAN fill the order & would take 10 mins!! Not convinced...we called TSK to be told YES indeed they could fill the order with a delay of 20 mins & btw we don’t have poached chicken or spinach! OK that’s fine & whilst slightly confused & frustrated we also understood sometimes things don’t go to plan. Then TSK cancelled the order themselves! Uber Eats investigate & say we cancelled it??? & offered a $5 credit & a polite reminder that my $64.80 will be back in my acct in 1-10 business days. What do I have now - NO food, $64.80 out of pocket so can’t reorder, still sick & very frustrated!!!

TSK is much more trendier then your average Japanese takeaway joint, but the offerings are very much the same. Sushi rolls, bento boxes, ramen and the likes, with the added plus of healthy poke bowls, TSK is a great addition to the area for those looking for a quick and filling meal.

My partner and I shared the pork katsu curry don and tempura udon, both which somewhat reminded us of Don Don and I mean this in a good way. The curry sauce was flavourful enough, and the pork katsu, albeit a bit dry in some parts, was encased in a crunchy outer layer. The tempura prawns were similarly just as crispy, and the prawns were meaty and juicy. The batter for the tempura veggies, on the other hand, were a bit soggy and thus less enjoyable. The broth for the udon was a tad light on flavours, but texture-wise the udon was spot on, and the soft-boiled egg (half an egg) was swoon-worthy.

Overall, good value for money, and the food definitely left us satisfied. Friendly staffs, and the service was prompt and efficient.

Food is sub par Japanese food; you get what you pay for. Had the chicken katsu and mine was over cooked, but as I was hungry I just finished it.
Seating is very cramped and staff didn’t seem too happy to serve when I came in.
Had higher expectations from a new shop! Won’t be coming back 👎🏼

A slightly better version of Don Don I guess. An extensive menu of all the crowd favourites designed for a quick and cheap eat. All the meals were freshly prepared and generously portioned.

We were invited to the grand opening to Tokyo Sushi Kitchen located in South Melbourne. Great eye catching decor with a japanese comic feel. They had great selection of sushi, nigri, seaweed and other side dishes. You can also create your own poke bowl as well which was really cool to do. Definitely a great place to come for lunch or if you need to grab a quick bite to eat.

Thanks again TSK!

Tokyo Sushi Kitchen aka TSK has opened a new store on Clarendon street in South Melbourne and is home to sushi rolls, sushi platters, poke bowls, teriyaki and if you want something sweet they even have some green tea ice-cream for dessert. TSK - sushi platters. You can get yourself a handroll, sashimi or nigiri on the go or opt for a sushi platter to share with friends. We had a range of sushi platters which were all very fresh and super delicious.

Will come back for:
+ Chicken Katsu Don
+ Teriyaki Chicken Bento

This place looks like it’s geared more towards a take away crowd. There isn’t much seating in store, and service is a little slow for a dine in experience. The food though, tasted good and the price is very reasonable for what you get. I particularly liked the chicken katsu don (generous, well balanced and tasty) as well as the teriyaki chicken bento (generous servings with a side of miso). The tan tan ramen that we had lacked a depth in flavour in the broth but was tasty all the same. I can see this being a great lunch option for people working around this area.

A fresh and family owned spot for delicious sushi, sashimi, nigiri, poke bowls etc. in South Melbourne. The neon signs and decor in the venue are so fun, and they have such a great selection of everything! The poke bar is great and gives you lots of choice, there’s plenty of room to eat on a lunch break or after work to catch up with friends for some light Japanese feasting!

TSK is the the new sushi joint in town and I was luckily enough to be invited to their opening launch in South Melbourne. Music pumping, free flowing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinkies, who couldn’t be more excited. It is a quick eats place BUT the interior does not portray that at all. Cool wallpapers to neon signs, it’s definitely the place to be.

I was lucky enough to attend the grand opening of TSK South Melbourne and was super impressed with the all the tasty dishes and the high quality ingredients they use. The DIY poke bowls were my favourite, especially with the plump sashimi salmon and spicy mayo. Loved that everything was so fresh!

I also sampled some of the hot food, the katsu and takoyaki in particular was excellent. The full menu is super extensive and includes sushi rolls, poke and don bowls, udon, ramen and bento boxes.
Everything is really reasonably priced too so definitely go check them out!

Such a good selection of sushi and nigri, absolutely loved the fun and welcoming vibes of the aesthetic and staff. A great location on Clarendon st and a perfect spot to get authentic sushi during the day after the usual ‘takeaway sushi hours’.

I order a Pork ramen and the pork was beautifully cook but found a big clump of noodle dough in the soup. They are politely took it back to the kitchen and gave me a free drink for the second wait. Then the ramen was under cooked and very doughy and the soup was just kind of lukewarm. Hope the chef pay more attention to the ramen as it is the main let off. Tam

Tried Tomkatsu ramen, it’s awful. The kind of noodle they use are not the proper one, also the ramen soup is too salty, the fried chicken is not good as well. Won’t come any more.😣

Decked out in iconic Tokyo style with a nod to minimalism, Tokyo Sushi Kitchen (TSK) in South Melbourne brings authentic Japanese cuisine with a modern twist. The futuristic fit out and super kawaii décor reflects the celebrated Japanese pop culture and TSK’s unique angle on casual dining.

While the menu offers a variety of classics we all know and love, such as sushi and sashimi, dons and bento boxes, there are also some impressive experimental dishes that are sure to whet your appetite. We’re talking made-to-order poke bowls, Cheese Katsu Cutlet, Ramen Pasta Carbonara (a Japanese & Italian fusion popular in Japan right now), and Katsu Sando and Hokkaido Cheese Toasties. One menu highlight is the charcoal grilled Wagyu Beef Don, with a +5-marble rating. *Drools*.

By night, TSK transforms into a yakitori and ramen bar with char grilled skewers and a selection of signature ramen dishes, featuring a rich 10-hour pork bone Tonkotsu broth. TSK brings all the Japanese comfort food you could imagine, washed down with Asahi on tap. Yes, you read correctly. Run, don’t walk!

Before visiting, I thought it was just a regular Japanese sushi shop but it surprised me with its high quality of sushi, poké, some don bowls. The shop is not spacious, however the staff and service are great.

We were kindly invited to the grand opening of Tokyo Sushi Kitchen tonight. The outlet was newly renovated and was bright and clean. It was very crowded when we arrived as there was a great turnout of people which gave the place a great vibe. There was also a live DJ and a free flow of champagne and also non-alcoholic drinks if we wanted.
The staff were warm and all smiles as they served everyone. There were construct your own poke bowls, sushi rolls, inari (beancurd pockets), nigiri sushi and sashimi displayed. Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough and didn’t get to taste the sashimi, inari and nigiri sushi. They went quick so they must be good! I had a few of the sushi rolls and whilst they were beautifully constructed, the rice was a little chewy/overcooked in texture and not firm with separate grains.
I also tried the grilled chicken on top of brown rice which was very yummy. I believe the chicken was blow torched as it had a smokey flavour to it which I really enjoyed. I also had the agedashi tofu which was fried crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. When I bit into it it was juicy and steaming and the sauce went well with it.
I also saw takoyaki balls and curry katsu don going around but sadly they all disappeared before I could get my hands on them.
To finish off we had green tea ice cream which was soft and creamy and had a good green tea flavour. We even got a goodie bag to take home which was so thoughtful and kind! Thank you Tokyo Sushi Kitchen for the invite! I know how hard you all worked to organise this event for us. I hope you have a prosperous business.

We were kindly invited to their opening night here at Tokyo Sushi Kitchen. Although the PR team for the night were friendly (in the hyped-up, instagram crowd sorta way), I'm sorry to say that I found the experience and food disappointing.

For starters, they clearly invited way more people than the small store could accommodate and were intending to cater for. There were some plates of various sushi on display along with a small amount of sashimi, but most of it was gone instantly and wasn't replenished. The horde of Instagram 'influencers' and food bloggers there were piling on sushi while juggling multiple plates like they had just returned from filming Survivor. I'm sorry but most of the homeless I've interacted with were more gracious, and it was an embarrassing scene to behold.

After the majority of the crowd had cleared out, I managed to try one of their tempura prawn sushi rolls. I had read elsewhere that the sushi wasn't very good, but the rice in the sushi roll was quite shocking. It tasted like ketupat (Malay compressed rice dumpling) - dense and stale. I don't really understand why the quality of the rice was this poor, given the rice served in their other dishes tasted fine. The seaweed and the tempura prawn both didn't taste like they were freshly made either. I don't particularly like Sushi Izu from Woolworth's but a pack of pre-packaged sushi off the shelf would have tasted better in my opinion.

The only other dish available besides the sushi was their poke station where you could choose your ingredients along with a base of white rice, brown rice or cold soba. I had a try of their salmon sashimi, prawns, avocado, wakame, seafood salad (crab stick) with spicy mayo on top of white rice. In another serving, we also tried the chicken, sweet potato and soba. All the ingredients tasted fresh here, so no complaints there. The prawns were quite well cooked, firm and plump. However, as I have mentioned in other reviews about poke bowls, I can't really give a place too much credit for a 'decent' poke bowl because there is hardly any cooking involved - most of it just involves putting raw ingredients on top of rice. The sashimi here wasn't seasoned with anything, so without the sauce to bind the flavours together it probably would have tasted mediocre. The avocado was also unevenly cut - my wife had big chunks that she couldn't finish, while I only had 2 little bits of avocado.

The rest of the dishes were served up on a tray from the kitchen in canape portions, and the waiter was usually swarmed the moment they appeared so we didn't get to try some of their dishes either. The agedashi tofu had a decent crispy skin, but wasn't served with broth. The takoyaki had a good bit of octopus in it, so it wasn't mostly flour, which was nice. The teriyaki chicken had a good charr on it - also positive. And the green tea ice-cream had a moderately strong green tea flavour.

All in all, their hot dishes were generally of a higher standard than their sushi, which was a letdown, but I'm not sure it was good enough to convince me to dine here intentionally. Thank you very much once again, TSK, for inviting us to dine here, and I'm sorry I could not give a more positive review, but I hope this has at least been constructive.

We were excited to invited along to TSK for the launch of their exciting re-imaged Claredon Street store. Tokyo Sushi Kitchen is now TSK and the store looked magnificent with new graphics and neon.

We got to sample a range of sushi, poke bowls, teriyaki chicken and curry katsu don bowls. I so miss my Japanese lunches from when I worked in the vicinity and was pleasantly reminded of share variety of fun ingredients.

The sashimi was fresh and I enjoyed the raw salmon sushi while my partner raved about the cooked salmon. The curry sauce on the katsu was wonderfully mild and I thought the teriyaki sauce on the chicken something special.

Certainly recommend for when you happen to be in South Melbourne. They even have a loyalty card.
