Subway

Downtown harbors one of Austin's best dining districts, and it's lovely to linger over conscientiously prepared, served, and presented culinary accomplishments, but I don't always have two hours and fifty bucks to linger. Sometimes I want something reasonably tasty and nutritious that fits in the forty-five minutes between bus and movie, and Subway on Congress is the perfect answer. With global chains like Subway the ideal toward which each avatar struggles is well defined, and of course the ideal is tasty and fresh. Freshness is Subway's logo expressed not visually but on the palate. The Congress store comes close to the corporate ideal. So close, in fact, that I have once or twice considered ditching the movie for one more sandwich. One of these days I will.
