Best to arrive early so you don't have to wait for a seat as it is a small location with limited seating downstairs. Tried the Kara Kara spicy chicken and it was really tasty. It wasn't over the top spicy but had good heat to it. The chicken was also moist and juicy. Unfortunately the restaurant has low air-conditioning so it was quite warm on a humid day. Worker was really friendly and apologetic but the service was great.

A delicious spot for lunch. Prices are reasonable (about $14-15) for a tasty lunch set including rice, miso soup, and a little side salad. The teriyaki salmon set looked small when it came out, but turned out to be the perfect amount of food with its 4x perfectly cooked chunky slices of salmon and delicious sticky teriyaki glaze. Highly recommended!

Great authentic Japanese restaurant. Never disappoints with delicious food at reasonable prices. The decor is about 20 years dated which just adds to the vibe...

Whenever you go down the stairs at Jun, its such an authentic experience It can easy to forget that you aren't actually in a Izakaya somewhere in Japan. Ive been going here for longer than I remember and am always delighted when I leave as are the many people I have brought with me over the years. Were really lucky in Perth to have such a great small businesses like Jun :)

Environment: located in a alley, then push the wooden door and walking down to the basement. There is a mini Japanese Garden at the corner, but the pool is not running. There is a bookcase with Japanese magazines and comics. Then go into the long dining area, a waitress will come up from the back to seat you. One side is Japanese Tatami (room) area where you have to take you shoes. Another side is normal tables & chair. Very traditional Japanese style decor and old Japanese advertisement pictures on the wall. Also can sit at the Yakitari bar. Limited seats, Booking for dinner is Highly recommend --- 7/10 Service: fast for lunch set. Reasonable time for Yakitori (only available for dinner). ---7/10 Food: Have not come here for long time. Yakitari was very authentic. More lunch set options than before. All lunch sets include Main, rice, miso soup, salad and pickles. A cup of green tea is free. Reasonable price. Authentic Japanese setting and presentation: rice & soup are in correct positions. Rice was cooked well, normal portion. Miso soup was normal. Salad with Japanese dressing was slightly watery and placed untidy in the bowl. Pickles was the worst part here, but not very important relatively. Kaki Fry (Deep fried Japanese oysters), $16.8: 5 oysters were cooked to perfection. --- 8/10 Potato Korokke (lunch special, potato croquettes), $13.8: there's potato, onion, carrot, corn and chicken: ok --- 7/10

Literally a hole in the wall! You would never know it's there unless you look for it. Amazing food at a reasonable price with huge portions too. The staff members are all Japanese. It can get pretty busy especially around lunch time. Highly recommend this place if you are ever around this part of town!

LUNCH SPECIALS AT JUN // Hiramasa Teriyaki: SA Yellowtail Kingfish fillet Teriyaki (aud15.80) and Chicken Kara-Age (aud13.80) from Jun restaurant, Perth CBD. This lunch special was super delicious and satisfying - generous portion and superbly tender, melt-in-the-mouth kingfish made our day! Chicken Kara-age (aud13.80): juicy, tender pieces of chicken very lightly coated in batter. Generous portions. Only complaint is that it’s quite oily. Tip: Their lunch specials are value-for-money (dinner is relatively much more expensive) and highly recommended. There was also a funny smell at the entrance and dated carpets on my third visit - hopefully they’ve managed to get rid of the smell. Tucked away in a laneway and down a flight of stairs, this hidden spot transports you to somewhere that seems to have been left forgotten: dated decor and furniture left lying haphazardly: remember - you’re not here for ambiance; you’re here for the food and friendly service.

A secret underground Japanese restaurant that's highly recommended. Been here a few times and food is always so freaking delicious. Interior represents the Japanese architecture. There's no split billing since we came in huge groups and service was efficient. No complaints, and always a happy customer.

A hidden gem on Hay St in the CBD.
The waitstaff are quite friendly and courteous. More importantly, their spicy karaage is awesome,
Well battered, hint of spice and not greasy.
Plus generous portions.
If you lunch here, prepare for a food coma after 🤣

If I could rewind 1 minute of my life after I stepped into this horrifying dungeon, I would have. The place needs a good clean and decor update first of all. But given its high rating I ignored the warning signs and set down.
I love yakitori, and i hope it would be good, but what respectable yakitori place doesn’t serve beer? Well... the kind of place where the yakitori is not charred and carries zero flavour. We ordered some sashimi as well, which was just ordinary. I was so shocked by the uni it didn’t even register as uni. Bland and crunchy, not the kind of adjectives usually associated with uni.
The only saving grace is the service.

Came for dinner for 2 on a weeknight. The restaurant is hidden down an empty laneway and walking down the flight of stairs, we were greeted with a broken down Japanese water feature with a plastic high chair resting randomly in the middle - a bit odd & not a great first impression. Inside it’s a narrow, small affair with some ‘traditional’ seating and regular tables. We ordered:
- Yakitori: chicken thigh with teriyaki (ordinary) & chicken tenderloin with plum sauce (chicken tasted poached & sauce was unpleasant). Neither tasted like they had been cooked on a proper yakitori flame grill.
- Nasu dengaku (fried eggplant with miso) - the miso was very overpowering to the point of being sickly
- Koebi karaage (river prawns) - simple but tasty
- Ika geso (squid tentacle on skewers) - favourite dish of the night
- Avocado salad - worst dish of the night, it consisted of a woolies packet salad mix and a few cherry tomatoes/avocado & cucumber slices - a bit insulting to be honest especially at $12
- Deep fried crab leg - plain & lacking flavour
- Pan fried scallops and asparagus soy butter sauce - disappointing in both flavour and portion size.
On the whole we left disappointed - service was ok, ambience was non existent (the place is in serious need of a clean up - there were boxes, bug spray, cleaning products & general junk in plain view of diners). Don’t set your expectations too high.
Tried the ramen which was one of the lunch specials at this place. Very tasty broth, had a nice spicy kick to it and the noodles were al dente. Portion size was slightly on the small side. Ramen came with salad and pickles which was a nice palate cleanser. Would like to return to try the dinner menu!

Looking at the setup of the store and believed it would be one of those hidden cheap authentic japanese resturants. The price on the menu seems reasonable but the proptions are quite small. Have to order more dishes to be full. Yakitory is nothing special and it was mostly too salty. The worst dish was the waggu beef skewer 12 bucks and the its a rump cut with chewy fat bits. The rice risotto is more like chinese congee. The soba is only a plain noodle for 12 bucks. The best dish was the desert but the portion is small.

Been wanting to try this hidden restaurant for dinner for quite a while, so came with family last night. Got seated straight away, service was attentive. Chicken karaage is a must! Yakitori (teri) and other grilled skewer items came with a charred taste to make it so tasty. You have to be patient though.

Whilst the food is good, the prices are a bit high considering the decor & experience. I suggest a internal refresh would serve them well.

Love this place! When I first stepped in I fell in love with the setting, it’s so unapologetically Japanese with the sliding like doors and the seating arrangements. We came for the yakitori and had a platter of the chef's selection, but it wasn't that spectacular. It didn't showcase the chicken well as it wasn't especially flavourful and there was no smokiness to the skewers. There was one pork skewer. The salmon onigiri was surprisingly good though. We enjoyed the takoyaki and others enjoyed the karaage. It was rainy and the roof was a little leaky, detracting from the atmosphere somewhat.

Found this little gem in the heart of Perth CBD after scrolling through Zomato for a lovely birthday meal. It is tucked away on the side alley off Hay street.
They offer a great range of menu including specials for the day, but we were unsure of the portion size of à la carte dishes, we decided to order from the set menu. I've decided to try my usual Chicken Kaarage (I know, I'm unadventurous). We discovered that we had to wait quite a fair bit for our meal, about 30mins from the time that we put our order in. To be fair, we did not order any entrée, which may have made the wait time shorter in between meals.
When the food arrive, the portion size were generous, we all had to share around. The food were delicious and tastes genuine, without heavy seasoning. I fell in love with the extra side of steamed tofu.
In all, we were quite satisfied with our meal and I will definitely come back to try their Oden winter Specials!

Hidden away down an alley in Perth CBD is this little gem that looks almost like you're in Japan. Down the steps and welcomed by the staff there we made our way to out seats and looked at the menu.

Wasn't sure how big the dishes were we resorted to the set menu items. We placed our order by about 7:10pm which was quite a busy time there but we didn't expect the food to take so long. Food only came to put tables close to 7:45 which made a few of us restless thinking our order had been forgotten. The Katsu Chicken that I offered was good. The portion size was generous and crumbed nicely. Overall, the experience was only negative based on the time taken for the food to be served. Could have just been a busy night, but I'll come back for sure.

My colleagues and I decided to visit with a couple of Japanese natives. The price was ok except for some aspects. Food wise, we felt it was authentic but just hard to get used to. The Japanese natives said the sea urchin was of good quality. Lovely pork belly (stewed) and soba noodles. Vegetable potato croquettes were a bit pricey at $10 for 2, the serve of cabbage was bigger than the croquettes themselves.

I ordered the Japanese style risotto which was like a watery miso porridge (like the Chinese "Zhou") which was apparently not meant to be like that. Sashimi salad was quite pricey working out to around $3 per slice (5 slices for about $14?). We waited on the quail eggs for a long time. We had to flag a waitress down after waiting 30 minutes after our meal to be told they'd be another 10 minutes. When we received them, they were very plain.

Loved the setting which looks like you're in a Japanese home. However, we didn't have any cushions (floor seating) and had sore buttocks when we left. The tables next to us had an overflow of cushions even though we arrived first. Overall, great experience but nothing I would be rushing back for.

The space is sooooo small. I understand that it's a traditional Japanese way to remove shoes when dining but the space is just to small to even move. You cannot, party here because their set menus are for individual people and not good for groups. Food quality is OK and when I was about to pay, I had to wait for at least 20-30 minutes because my card can't get through their system. Something was wrong with their machine. I was a little disappointed

I had dinner here ordering the yakitori, udon, scallops and green salad. I enjoyed the soy asparagus scallops, but some people might not like it as it still has the roe attached to it. The udon was okay, a little bit too salty. I liked some of the yakitori, but a lot of salt again. Overall it is worth a visit, but the price is a little too high I think.

I really love this place. It is a reliable, fantastic lunch place that never dissapoints. The lunch menu has only a handful of items, all of which are traditional chicken. The meat is succulent, fresh and perfectly cooked. The flavours are perhaps the closest you would get to Japan here. I was so pleasantly surprised. The service is fast enough and nice enough. Special menu items change by the day if you are feeling adventurous. Those items don't dissapoint either. The only downside is its really sketchy venue that is underground in an alley. But lets be honest, I would walk through the worst part of town for this flavour.

Still one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants in Perth. Situated downstairs with the entrance in an alleyway - love the ambience in this place - cosy, Japanese and friendly. It's byo so make sure you do! Had the set menus here - average $30 for the bento - but the servings are huge. Chicken Katsu and Deep Fried seafood bento sets. The katsu is done really well, not oily or too heavy on the batter, crispy, plenty of sides including soup, salad, steamed vegetables, rice and crab mayo salad. Such good flavours and tastes - does not feel like any of the fast food type Japanese places regularly found in the city. Their a la carte menu also serves fresh sashimi, great yakitori or bbq skewers, meatballs are delicious. Their karaage I would say is one of the best I've had - try the citrus infused ones.

Jun is a restaurant hidden in an alley way, into the basement. It can be quite tricky to find if not familiar with the area.
I came here with a few friends for dinner last Saturday evening. We ordered the set menu. The teriyaki beef that I had was quite tasty except it consist of 80% of onion with 20% of beef which cost around $35. My friends said the chicken Katsu was quite tasty. The side dish that came with the set menu was quite average and nothing special.
When we asked for our bill, we were quite shock that our bill came to a total of $260 for five set menu which was be around $30 -$35 each. It was about $80 extra that they accidentally calculated wrongly. We didn't get any apology from their mistake.
Overall, I think the food was quite overpriced. I've been to Tokyo and Seoul and the moment I walked in here, I had glimpses of these previous trips. Maybe it's the way the layout is set, it's very downtown Tokyo-ish and I don't know if this is intentional, but I was certainly feeling as if I had walked into a local Tokyo bar! And I haven't even started talking about the food yet! Yes, it's a little more expensive than average but it was actually worth it. I left this place wanting more (in a good way!).

I was suprised this place was still open. I remembered going many years ago and thinking that it wouldn't last long given its location. I was obviously wrong.

This small Japanese restaurant serves small dishes of Japanese food to share. I noted a lot of Japanese expats were having a after work meal and drinks here.

The place had a musky smell to it and I wasn't sure if it was the carpet or if it was the seaweed. Food is expensive if you need to fill yourself up. I wasn't overly impressed with the food but don't get me wrong, the food was still ok.

I probably won't be coming back again. A hidden gem located in Perth CBD Hay Street through an alley way and finally down a set of stairs. It's a very nice homely restaurant that can cater to maybe max 40 people at a time.

We started our Jun lunch off at 1:30pm just as the lunch rush had finished so there were still a few busy tables. I ordered the Karaage Chicken and my partner ordered the Katsu Chicken. The servings were large and the price was reasonable. Also the green tea we ordered comes free of charge aswell.

Only thing that let us down was the Katsu NEEDED the soy sauce on the side. Without the sauce, there was little to zero flavour. We tried to book dinner on a Friday night but was informed that there was a minimum charge of $25 per person. Not knowing the menu, it's best to go during lunch time.

Very humble and positive staff that greeted us when we came in and thanked us when we left. I would definitely return with a larger stomach.

On my first visit to Jun I ordered a Chicken Katsu take away. The portion size was decent for the price, however, the chicken mainly consisted of batter - it was very greasy and not a pleasant meal.

A year later I tried Jun again, with the intention of a cheap lunch with some friends. I ordered the Ramen "lunch special". The waiter looked confused, so I pointed to the lunch special sign on the wall, which is in Japanese but has the word "Ramen" and the number "10". He then pointed to the menu, and I shook my head and said no, lunch special, and pointed again at the wall. He nodded and left.

The waiter then brought out a ramen, small gyoza and a small cup of dressing-soaked salad, which I assumed was the special. The gyoza were very nice, but the ramen was very tasteless. When I went to pay, I was charged $24.00. I explained to them again that I ordered the lunch special and pointed to the sign but they pointed to the menu and said "ramen, gyoza". I paid double what I had intended and left very unhappy.

Aside from getting my order so wrong, the meal definitely wasn't worth $24.00. Wouldn't go back.

Great variety in the menu, stuff I've never seen before. Relatively cheap. The staff are very nice and delivered food slowly so we still had room on our table. I've yet to be disappointed.

The location itself is a little strange and the restaurant isn't the most pleasant - the lighting is dim, the walls are worn and old, and the place itself is in dire need of a renovation or something of the sort. Despite this, the service is great and the food is tasty.

Whenever I've visited, the restaurant is always busy and generally full. There aren't many tables so if you're wanting to have lunch, i'd suggest waiting a few minutes before they open, as a line tends to form around then. There are always a large amount of Japanese customers, which is a pretty clear indication of how good the food is.

I'm not sure if the lunch menu differs to the dinner menu, as I've only ever gone for lunch. The menu usually consists of around 4 - 5 items and a daily special that as you would expect, changes daily.

I'd definitely recommend trying the teriyaki chicken or karaage chicken (so far, Jun has the best I've tried). But I'd also definitely recommend their daily specials.

I'm yet to try the udon, so I'm excited for whenever my next visit will be.

Whether its a cheap lunch alternative or an authentic dinner bento, Jun is a venue not to be missed. Its large clientele of Japanese during lunch hours especially is clear indication that this basement diner is doing something right. . This lunch we ordered several of their punch specials which includes the usual suspects Chicken Karaage, Chicken Katsu and another Chicken dish called the Tatsuta-age. These chicken dishes are comparable to your suburban Japanese takeaway but in massive proportions.

Down the laneway , into the basement and you have stepped back in time to Jun. This place is a go to when we want cheap, delicious food and a fun and cheery atmosphere. The agedashi tofu is so delicious and so is the deep fried eggplant. Not a big fan of the yakitori however. The more people you come with , the cheaper it seems to be!

Hidden underground via an alleyway off Hay Street Jun is a favourite that always delivers on taste and value. Cramped, a little dingy but with flavoursome street style Japanese fare Jun makes you feel as if you could indeed be stepping through a portal that transports you into inner city Japan.

It's good stuff and well priced. Service is solid.

If not for the price. My sister and I dined here Thursday evening and it was as good as we remember. Service is pretty slow however so be prepared to wait for dishes to come out as they are ready rather than all at once.

We ordered a lot (the portions are small) but probably could've done without two dishes. Ordered the chicken teriyaki salad, agadashi tofu, butter scallops and asparagus, butter squid, potato croquettes, butter corn, two onigiri, miso soup and the mochi dessert. The flavours are authentic and complement one another. The only two that didn't really amaze us were the salad which was a bit gritty with sand and the corn which had a burnt butter/strange flavour to us.

Really enjoy this food but the price is not comparable to what you get. The decor is very run down and almost shabby. The food speaks for itself but doesn't require a lot of artistic flair or creativity. All up it came to $94 (the only drinks we had were tap water and green tea). Can't justify the price to head here again any time soon.

-----08 Jun, 2011-----

Is Jun. Is good.. Went here after reading a review in the local paper and after looking it up on Urbanspoon, was convinced it would be a winner.

A little way down a lane, steps lead down to the dining area and restaurant below street level. Decor is a little run down and there's the option of sitting in traditional Japanese tables or western seating.

Is a very small restaurant and is evidently popular with Japanese people. Several people were turned away while we were there having not booked.

Extensive menu and everything we ordered was freshly made. A tip, when you order, order the rice first! I ordered all the mains then rice and soup and so things came out as they were cooked. I ended up asking for the rice over halfway through the meal.

Ordered the croquettes, mackeral, mixed skewers, udon and rice. Everything was authentic and tasted as it would in a traditional homestyle Japanese restaurant.

I would def. go back and try out other things. At a total of $66, the cheap price and great taste would lure anyone back.

I think the secret is out on this place.

Deep Fried Pork Belly and Onion Skewers ($9.00 for 2) - a must order. Jun is easily one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Perth - it's one of those reliable places that I could walk in to (with a reservation, of course) and really enjoy whatever we pick off the menu, regardless of whether it's been tried before. It reminds me of a little underground restaurant in Tokyo; appropriately hidden from plain sight and even features a line of chabudai tables.

Nice little place. Was surprised to see that this place was underground! Came here with a few friends after not having any luck with other restaurants as they were closed. It was the typical peak lunch hour (sadly). The place is small, and can get very cramp when full. Luckily, we scored some seats. Staff seems a bit cold but surely welcoming. Ordered karaage and katsu chicken meals) from the well priced lunch menu (~$11) which I agree, is rather limited. Service was not bad, for a busy time. Very decent serving size. It came with miso soup and all the little sides. Rice was cooked well and was not dry. Katsu chicken was soft, fresh (but a tad oily) and the batter was light and fluffy. Left full and satisfied.
Will definitely return.

The Fried chicken rice is good, however the skills they used to cook skewers are terrible. Japanese skewers are supposed to be cooked on top of charcoal stove in high heat whilst the chef keeps putting sauce on the skewers to "marinate" & maintain its moisture. The skewers should come with the sauce favour & a bit of char-grill taste. Unfortunately... instead... the chef keeps spraying water on the stove & skewers as soon as the flames come up... (flames coming up is normal for japanese skewers!). The way they are doing takes out the grill flavour & diluted the taste of meat. For the price they charged, I wont vote it down but I wish they know what they are doing.

Jun again for sure!. I had a great first night here. Glad we ordered a table on a Thursday night though that's for sure! We ordered some pickled octopus and some sashimi tasting plates to share (scallops were the stand out) which were devine, foliowed by some ginger picked fish which was amazing and melt in your mouth.
Mains weren't as good- I had Teriyaki beef which was pretty average to be honest, much prefer main dishes at Sado Island and the like, but otherwise did really enjoy everything else about the night. Service wasn't great but friendly enough, the food spoke for itself and the venue was a little kitsch and cute but in a good way. You'll be seeing me again!

Disappointing overall. Came here at lunch time, it was busy and after sitting down for less than a minute a waiter came up to us and asked to borrow the lunch special menu for other customers who just sat down. Fair enough we were browsing the a la carte menu as well but how hard is it to make a few more photocopies of the menu at the news agent next door?!!
Only thing worth ordering again was the chicken karaage set which was delicious and of great value. We also ordered the cuttlefish which turned out to be dry and heavily crumbed and lacking taste. The Agedashi and Potato croquettes were a big disappointment and fail. Sorry Jun, most likely won't be coming back.

Best Kaarage in Perth. I normally come here to have lunch on the weekdays and let me tell you that the kaarage and Chicken teriyaki sets are the best. For $11.80 you get a generous serve of kaarage/teriyaki chicken and a bowl of rice, salad and miso soup. The Kaarage is beautifully marinated and every bite is wonderful so delicious. The teriyaki is well flavoured too.

I have tried the chicken katsu but I think its a bit too doughy (too much crumb).

Extremely poor service.... I'm not one to fuss about service usually but tonight when we decided to try out this highly rated Japanese restaurant we left feeling quite outraged.

We decided to order two udons and a soba, understandably since it seemed like a relatively busy night for a Monday we knew we would have to wait but after prompting the waitress after 30mins and seeing the surrounding tables consistently being served their food and us still waiting for our dishes after more than 45mins we asked the bill and left!

I think waiting over 45mins for a simple plain udon & soba dish is ridiculous, the service was extremely poor and they were not even apologetic for not serving our food. I will not be trying this place again.

Food - nice, atmosphere and decor - felt like I was in Tokyo again! The only thing was the poor service. The staff were friendly but were lacking. My orders were poorly time and my partner and I had finished our meals by the time the starter came out (grilled mushrooms). Portions are quite small but this is how they serve food at izakaya's - they're made to share/sample. Free green tea, nice as I always order tea at Asian restaurants but I had to ask time and time again for another serve. Over 2 hours I had 2 small cups! I'd rather pay for the damn thing than have ro remind the waitress time and time again. She actually came and topped up the cups at the adjacent table without the customers asking, yet i struggled to get her attention - her back was always facing me and her hearing i guess maybe not so good. Overall, not entirely happy but some of the dishes may have me coming back for another shot. Probably not in a hurry though.

Jun is a great izakaya-style Japanese restaurant. It’s down a small alley way and down the stairs, just off Hay Street. Be prepared to take off your shoes if you’re dining in a group on the larger traditional tables. At lunch time they serve a small choice of reasonably priced lunch sets. I had the chicken teriyaki set which came with a huge portion of chicken, a salad, miso soup, rice and pickles. $11.80! The izakaya menu looked delicious – I’ll return again for dinner. 568 Hay Street, Perth Share this: Twitter Facebook Google +1 Like this: Like Loading... Over 10 years ago Jun used to be my favourite hidden gem for a bowl of Ramen and authentic Japanese food. Now , although its furniture and fittings are worn and dated, the simplicity of this place still has its charm. It's more relaxed and casual than in its hayday, but food here is still very good for its price. and if you are after something a little more Japanese than your regular teriyaki chicken, then this place has a great selection of other authentic japanese foods, especially yaki tori varieties. Service was friendly too. BYO sake for extra enjoyment. :)

Service with a smile. This smart little Japanese restaurant is situated in an alley off Hay street in the city. Walking through the doors and down the stairs you get a good feel for the place. The waitresses dresses in the traditional attire scurry around taking orders and serving customers whilst the aroma of the dishes hits you and make you even more hungry then when you arrived.

The menu is pretty extensive and as most of the dishes are small and made for sharing this allows you to have a good try of a few different options. I ended up spending a bit more $ than the norm due to dietary limitations but if you order a noodle dish and a few supplementary dishes the cost will end up being pretty reasonable.

We ordered the chicken tenderloin skewers, chicken giblet skewers, pork belly skewers, deep fried tofu, ox tongue, salmon sashimi, enoki mushroom omlette, beef tataki, pan fried squid in butter sauce and asparagus and prawns. The pork belly skewers and the ox tongue were definite standouts amongst an impressive lineup.

The service was pretty good and the waitresses were quiet friendly. All of the food ... and I stress EVERYTHING we ate tasted great. Even the miso soup was decent. A good little hidden gem for dinner on a lazy week night or the weekend. Its also BYO as well which is handy too.

You should definitely check out this place if you haven't already!

Good food, disappointing service. We came here after work one night after hearing rave reviews from others. When we were about to order the waitress quickly cut us off when more guests arrived, but we brushed it aside since it was quite busy and there only being two waitresses. My salmon sashimi was the first thing out which was fresh and a decent portion. My partner ordered the karaage bento which came out quickly after. The chicken portions were huge and I liked all the little sides that come with it.

Unfortunately the rest of my meal was delayed over the space of an hour or so. After my partner had finished eating my pork belly yakitori came out, 3 bits of thin pork on a stick was devoured as soon as it came. My chicken skin yakitori came out 15min later, a little underwhelming but I think it would have been better with teriyaki sauce. After my miso and rice became cold I asked about my chicken yakitori. The waitress came back and said that the chef hadn't even started it and it was going to be another 20min wait. I cancelled the order and ordered a serving of karaage and fresh rice instead. Unfortunately my partner had to wait this whole time for me to finish my meal, which was really disappointing.

The food is great but we were definitely let down by the service, a simple update of my meal would have been nice, or perhaps an extra waitress or two on site. I would like to give the place another to see if we had come on an off night or not.

Real Japanese. I lived in Japan for a long time before coming to Perth, and was initially very excited about the number of Japanese restaurants. However, it seems like most places' idea of Japanese food is teriyaki chicken with rice, and that's it. Jun, on the other hand, is fully authentic - the food is excellent and the vibe is right on. Sure, the rock feature is a little naff, but that's all part of the charm. Service is friendly and fast, and the pricing seemed reasonable given the quality and location.

Great little place. This place is fantastic. Nothing fancy, the olg daggy decor you expect of a japanese restaurant down an alleyway. Our orders were taken quickly, food arrived as it was cooked, and all of it was delicious. An ice bucket for our wine was brought out quickly. Between 4 of us we chose about 7 dishes plus rice and were all satisfied. The bill came to $90.

Only downfall I can see is that when the restaurant is full it will get quite noisy. Offering something different to your usual Japanese fare, some dishes are unique and prices are reasonable. Staff do their job as per their roles and were very patient with indecisiveness. That's bound to happen when you get a menu that has so much choice and you get overwhelmed by what to try. It's probably best to visit Jun with a heap of other people so you can try a lot of their little sized dishes...or you can just do so yourself. But it's probably better for you and your waistline to be greedy in a group, rather than be a pig alone.

Authentic Japanese. Delightful little restaurant, Jun has been here for many years and it's easy to see why. The sashimi is always fresh, the grilled mackerel falls off the bone, the soba noodles in soup is a light version of the udon and the grilled shiitake are a wonderful texture. Everything is a little heavy on the salt but the flavours are fantastic. It's BYO and for lunch it's not the a la carte but a set lunch menu.

Authentic and fresh. Food 8/10 : Service 10/10 : Atmosphere 6/10 ; Value for $ 8/10
Felt quite cool walking through the red doors and down the stairs to this little gem so was expecting a bit of a modern underground style, but this was definitely very traditional. We were asked to take our shoes off for the traditional table we were sitting at.

We decided to order a group of dishes for the two of us to share; salmon sashimi, boiled quail eggs, chicken yakitori with plum sauce, boiled spinach, grilled asparagus, tako yaki (octopus balls), steamed rice and miso soup. My favourite were the quail eggs, which came on a skewer and were "deep fried" but it was a very light almost tempura batter. The sashimi, tako yaki and miso soup were all amazing but the chicken was a little over-cooked and the spinach dish was served cold (meant to be this way but I really didn't like this with the dressing it came with). We were quite full and the total bill was $50 so definitely great value for money.

I would certainly recommend this place to those who want a traditional experience, but wouldn't recommend for those that want a more modern atmosphere, have a big crowd or are unwilling to de-shoe!

There is an IGA liquor just near here so would recommend BYO.

Miss :/. I loved the decor and how it was authentic Japanese food, but I think this was a miss for me. The portions were small and after eating a few dishes, i still felt hungry. The staff were very polite and shouted "Irrashaimase" every time a customer walked down the stairs to the restauarant. The only highlight I would say for the menu would be the Takoyaki. Lots of octopus in the balls compared to most other Japanese restaurants so I'd say this dish is a must try. Probably would give the yakitori a miss but if you're a meat lover you might like this dish. To me, it was just skewered chicken, which you can easily make at home. Overall, it was not bad, but not the best experience.

Good but not 'authentic'. Coped with a large group well, food was delicious but not necessarily 'authentic', lacking in ambience but nothing a dimmer couldn't fix.

A little hidden gem. I accidently came across this quaint restaurant, to my surprise it was like one of those bar restaurants in Japan. The food was very very close to the bar restaurants, so you need to wait in between each dish they bring out.

Unlike other restaurants which brings out all of the dishes out at the same time.

So if you are looking for a long night of drinks and conversations make a booking. It will be worth your while

Small portions and not much menu selection for non-meat eater. The dishes are all extremely salty. I have high hopes for this place but it has left me speechless..

Obsessed.. Delicious, authentic food. Had the mixed yakitori platter, mixed sashimi, buttered corn, a few salads and ponzu karaage and was in gastronomic heaven. Food came out really quickly but we were one of the only tables as it was an early dinner. Service was prompt and efficient. One of my new obsessions!

Nice place, great service.. Went here for dinner after Friday night shopping and was pleased with the great service and good food. The dishes were very well presented and the service was great. Judging by the attendance, it is a very popular place and the underground location adds some charm. The decor is quaint but a little run down, but that almost adds to the charm. Worth a visit.

Food was really tasty but we should have booked because we had to sit at the counter and got there earlier because we were starving and there was a 40 min wait on yakitori. BUT it was delicious and only cost $56 to fill both of us up completely.

The fish and scallops were meltingly tender – a sure sign of fresh product, and beautifully sweet, like all good seafood should be. I loved the slightly gelatinous, sort of silky texture of the raw scallops.

Awesome hidden goodness. I have been to this place plenty of times. First time i went there was like years ago, when they were under the old management. Back then, they had like the cheapest and best ramen in town.. now they sort of provide a slightly different menu. Don't get me wrong, they still have very delicious meals though, which are at reasonable price.. well considering the serving and the presentation. It's best for small occasion simply because the place is a little small. They have very friendly staffs who are willing to explain to you their recommended dishes. So if you have never eaten Japanese food before, don't worry, they won't rip you off.

Japanese food heaven :). You wouldn't know this place if you haven't heard of it, or seen reviews on it, because it's located underground, and the front door is in an alley!

They serve all kinds of delicious authentic japanese food; from rice balls (onigiri) to skewers or teriyaki set meals. I'm always torn between its plentiful choices of food when ordering. I would recommend the pork skewer, squid batayaki and corn in butter. Don't forget to try their green tea ice-cream too :)

The restaurant has a good ambience, and on weekends or even, weekday nights it's always full. Call in to reserve a place beforehand would be a good idea! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves good food :)

Went here for lunch today with a friend for the first time and was very disappointed. Very limited lunch menu, dirty tables, and unappetizing mains. The miso soup wad good but that is no where new enough to overcome everything else. Would not recommend this place.

Hidden away. Run by Japanese people, modelled like a small japanese store like the ones in Japan, hidden away in a side street.

It has limited seating, choice of 3-4 items only for lunch and is delicious @$11.90. Nice distraction from work. Went there 2.5years ago and forgotten about it. Found again and I still think its great.

Fun and fantastic. I always go to this place whenever I am in the city. The lunch specials are great and decently sized. I am a fan of their karrages, it's crispy and complemented with the miso...excellent. I want to see how dinner is and try some other dishes. My tip: to avoid the lunch rush go before 12 and come after 1:30pm then you can get a table. The place is quite small so getting a table can be difficult. The service was efficient and the food came out pretty quickly. Overall it is a fun and fantastic place!!!!

Nice but a little salty. I like this place although the food is salty except the soups. Prices have gone up over the years, it needs more vents and the cover for their chopsticks are still recycled (the cute folded black card with paper bird stuck to it).

It wasn't as good as two years before in terms of quality of food/atmosphere but it's still a great place, with great service and good food. Authentic.

Value and great food. Cute, little, underground restaurant. Although, one of our friends asked if we were taking him to a strip club as we turned down the alleyway.
We went OTT and ordered a huge spread of food and green tea between the three of us, and it came to less than $20 each.
Highlights were the agadeshi tofu, cabbage salad with spicy bean paste and deep fried eggplant in sauce. Apparently the tuna sashimi was really good too, but I don't eat seafood.
Absolutely fantastic meal, and great service. My only bone to pick was that it took about 20 minutes to have our order taken. Highly Reccommended!

My favourite place in Perth. Good food at the right price. We've been taking friends to Jun for years and it's now a favourite among our circle of friends. Great salmon sashimi and the pork belly in broth is delicious. Menu is large and diverse enough which makes trying something new each visit relatively easy.

My partner and I have had the pleasure of dining regularly at Jun over the past three years. The staff are always polite, friendly and attentive, and the food is fantastic. The salmon sashimi is consistently excellent, and easily the freshest we've ever tasted. Definitely our favourite place to eat in Perth - consistently high standards and reasonably priced. Jun's good reputation is obviously spreading as the restaurant now gets quite busy, particularly on a Friday night.

This tiny little gem is the kinda place you don't want to rave about as the publicity would ruin the atmosphere. Hidden away underground, awesome food and doesn't cost the earth! Sashimi is so fresh and delicious and the agadeshi tofu is the best I've had in a long time. This will definitely become a regular place of mine!

Underground Secret -shhh.. This place is a hidden gem. When I say hidden I mean unless someone takes you there you probably will never find it.
For starters, the entrance is in a deserted alleyway and the actual restaurant is underground! Literally.
The experience of eating here is so authentically Japanese that 99 per cent of the clientele are visiting salarymen from Tokyo, perhaps because of the delicious and utterly authentic Izakaya style food served here on a daily basis.Yakitori washed down with a nice cold beer is my favourite.
The waitresses sometimes struggle with english but far from being frustrating it adds to the feeling that one has somehow left Perth and stepped into downtown Harajuku, if only for lunch.
Jun- Perfect for those looking for something a bit different in Perth.
Open for lunch and dinner except sundays.
Byo only.
