The Red Hook

It has been a few years since I last came here, and things were surely different. The lobby is now closed off to customers and Red Hook introduced a walk up window in place of their lobby. Part of the whole experience of Red Hook that I really enjoyed was being able to go in and get that freshly baked desserts blended with coffee aroma. There are still a few tables out front on the sidewalk, but this coffee shop is always busy so getting a table will require perfect timing (or good luck). It will be nice to see their lobby be open once again, and hopefully it will be soon.

Amazing lattes, NOT dog friendly. There is no indoor seating right now--just an indoor counter--but I was told I couldn't bring my dog inside to order. Ferndale has so many dog owners and also has a serious foot-traffic problem from M-F. This seems like a huge miss for the Red Hook owners. Five stars for the latte, minus two for being inhospitable (and foolish).

Yay! They are open again! I’m so happy, and it looks like the renovations added room inside, so that’s awesome. I really appreciate the staff here; they’re so good at what they do. I appreciate the Covid measures they’ve taken, down to the little rainbow X’s to mark six feet in the line 🌈 My faves: cortado, dirty chai, hand pies, galette, popovers, and superfood cookie!

Their pastries all looked absolutely delicious and they had some gluten free and/or vegan options as well. I tried their Hummingbird Cake with cream cheese frosting (which incidentally was gluten free).They had a small selection of sweets and one savory option. They also have very interesting lattes here, such as a charcoal latte and beetroot latte, and make their own syrups: cardamom, lavender and orange. I'll be returning for sure! Here is my review of their Hummingbird cake 🍰🐦 A banana based cake with pineapple, raisins and pecans. For a banana based cake it was quite fluffy and not at all greasy. The cream cheese frosting was very light and just cheesy and tarte enough without being overpowering or overwhelmingly sweet. My Earl grey tea went well; I suspect the bergamot complimented the fruityness of the cake. Apparently it was gluten free, but I didn't try it for that reason. It was so pretty, and the name was so cute. The gentleman behind the counter at this very cute cafe assured me it was delicious and not too sweet. He was correct!

I go to breakfast a lot, and I was very happy with Red Hook. Usually you spend 8 bucks on an omelette that has hashbrowns, toast, meat and etc.. You eat it all and then feel sluggish and heavy. But Red Hook had some great cheap and PERFECTLY portioned items for breakfast. I got a breakfast sandwich that was amazing, and I felt the perfect amount of full.
