Bath Fish & Chips

Note: This fish and chip place has changed hands at least once since I reviewed it and, therefore, I can't vouch for what it is like now. I can't vouch for other people's experience, but I couldn't fault their regular cod and chips. They recently opened so I expect it's taken a little while to get it perfect and to me it was. It came with a good-sized piece of fish coated in batter that melted in the mouth. Chips were crispy on the outside breaking open to reveal fluffy potato inside. (If you're tourist visiting Bath that's what traditional fish and chips is supposed to be like!) I find it strange that people think it's very overpriced. I paid £8.50 which isn't much more than the going rate locally. It's not cheaper than Seafoods in Kingsmead Square. (As of the date of this review, I think their takeaway medium cod and chips is £6.70.) Ultimately, I'd say you pay for what you get and although there are a number of good chip shops in Bath this a good choice. In terms of the place itself, I would say that although shiny and new, the venue lacks any real atmosphere. They are planning to open seating upstairs so I would hope they would invest in giving the whole place a distinct character as it feels like a very generic old style chippy currently. But I'm rating the food here and it was excellent. Please put out some condiments as well as salt and vinegar. Some of us like mayonnaise with our chips (I know, blame family holidays to the Netherlands for that sacrilege) and, of course, tomato ketchup and they should be included in the price.

This place offers both take away (on the ground floor) and eating insade (on the upper floor). We decided to try eating in and ordered fish and chips for lunch and let me tell you - we got a huge portion of food on our plates for a fair price. One of the best fish and chips dishes I have ever ordered. The food made my stomach full for the rest of the day. If you find yourself in Bath, definitely try Bath fish and chips!
