A go to favourite. Their meat is so tender, rice is so tasty and I love that spicy green sauce. Can't wait to get back there again.

My score 3.25 stars. J and I had lunch here on Fri 18th Oct. A small interior – tables, chairs and menus were a bit "tired" (our table top was a little sticky too). Service was ok (if a bit distracted) - not as welcoming or friendly as New Somali Kitchen across the road. TBH it felt like the lone staff member was the cook, doing prep and covering everything if customers came in at lunchtime. I also say this because most of the meat dishes weren’t available yet (cooking not finished) and this included the Coconut fish Muffo which was what we came here for especially (bummer).

Because of this we opted to share “The Platter” ($19) - Meat, rice, sides and a dessert. Presentation not that great – I think the dessert and green sauce should have been brought over separately, rather than crammed onto the wooden platter.

Sambusi (beef only available) - Was ok, a fair size too (it did seem like it was rewarmed, rather than cooked fresh though).
Falafels (2) - Were small, not much flavour and bordering on being fried a bit too long.
Green piquante sauce - Was ok, but quite thin, so didn’t stick to anything (I used a lot of it with the rice in the end – a tasty combo).
Fish – Fairly good size, moist; marinade was nice (but not as good as NSK’s). Fresh lemon was a nice touch.
Rice – LOTS of it, but thankfully was VERY nice (so we ate every last grain)! :)
Veg – Slightly charry (nice), not a great deal of it but tasted pretty good (esp with the rice).
Salad - Was ok, but small. Had lots of raw onion which we liked.
Mango yoghurt parfait – Not huge, not too sweet (which was good), but it was a bit gritty. Coconut and nuts were nice, but presentation was subpar.

Overall the platter was ok, but too big for one person and not quite enough for two. My advice would be to skip lunch here and try it out at dinner time (the Muffo beckons)…

Amazing Stuff! I bought the platter which was just under $20 and it came with fragrant rice with salads and marinated lamb that was cooked so well it easily came off the bone! (check out my Video Review on YouTube to see the bone-sucking action). The platter also comes with a few entrees, a salad and a dessert and the spicy sauce is a must for spicy food lovers - Great value for money for an family run restaurant and a must-try for those who have not experienced the wonder that is Somali Food!

A great atmosphere even though its really a cafe style restaurant. The host was very attentive to use and he went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our dinner. The sweet cinnamon tea was a nice start.
I had the goat platter and loved it especially with the lovely mango yoghurt desert. My wife and son also enjoyed their meals. We'll be back🤤

Always the best food! Very flavourful & delectable. Ambiance of the place can be improved though also I wouldn't mind a little more cleanliness but otherwise the food is really good & the staff is very friendly as well. For the full Somali food experience try the platter, it has entree, main & dessert all in one. Must try!

Wholesome, clean, simple but tasty food. Great value for money. Being of an African ethnicity myself, would like a bit more spice and flavour, but I can understand why perhaps toned down for local market. Nice variety of meat and fish dishes, paired with spiced rice and a nominal amount of salad. I'm yet to try other dishes. Significant portion sizes and nice decor in restaurant creating a warm, inviting environment to enjoy a cheap, relatively healthy eat.

Awesome experience. Cozy place with very friendly and kind staffs.
I surprised with the taste. Super delicious.
Portion size is fair for the price. Taste was amazing. The green hot sauce that serve with your dish gives another aspect to your food!
You’ll get a banana with your food!! Isn’t it awesome?

#Somali eats is a bright and happy restaurant that serve up some authentic Somali cuisine. Lots of dishes to suit all tastes and they even add on a banana to your main meal. Good flavour and would recommend if you want to try something different. Coconut Fish Muffo $16 Corn Bread served with Creamy Coconut Fish Sauce

Very friendly staff. Ordered the somalieats speciality one with lamb and the other with falafel. Also got a mango smoothie, somali tea and serve of hot chips. Somali eats speciality is amazing. The lamb was so tender, falafels werent too oily. The rice was amazing, great taste with all the herbs and spices. Mango smoothie was delicous and loved the sweetness in the tea

I came in here with super high hopes that really kind of just kept getting knocked down throughout the evening; to clarify this was booked with a voucher and was mentioned upon entering, which later became a drama in itself.

The food itself was alright, nothing particularly amazing really but it wasn’t bad – the service was... something else. Understandably the wait staff weren’t all that familiar with english, nor do I think they were deliberately being rude or malicious. Still, there’s a degree of service you expect from a restaurant and there are plenty and I mean plenty of foreigner run establishments that deliver far better.

To begin with our food took a near twenty five minutes to arrive – not terrible as my partner and I made do with the time. But we had been told the kitchen was out of chicken and both of our meats would have to be swapped (after my initial fish was out too.) Then my partner’s dish had chicken regardless of their making him change, whereas mine did not (more just cubes of rather overcooked beef. Again still flavourful just not memorable.) Furthermore I had requested the rice be swapped with cauliflower/broccoli as the menu stipulates you can do for a paleo option. Honestly I kind of anticipated it wouldn’t happen, and expectedly they brought the plate out with rice. Fine. Fifteen minutes later when I’m nearly done they then bring out another plate of just cauliflower/broccoli. ...Interesting. There was also this mix of raw onion and cooked onion and then just a huge chunk of the end of an onion that was spliced in the food that.. I doubt was intentional. Could be wrong but hey.

On that note we had also entered an entree (falafels) which just for some reason was forgotten about despite our having asked and being told it was “on the way.” Never arrived. On payment they tried to make us pay for the entree too, whilst initially refusing our voucher until someone else in the kitchen who I assume had more authority had to correct the girl at the counter.

All in all, food was okay, but probably won’t ever come back for it again.

Firstly, I must mention to you that my friends and I, we like trying new cuisines & flavours, we go out for food at least twice a month and we usually don't pay over 30-35 per person. I must also declare to you that we don't have strange willing on food.

We decided to go to this restaurant as we wanted to eat traditional Somali cuisine and we read for this place on Facebook and groupon
It is located in Flemington opposite a main road (racecourse road). It's very easy to find it, and medium - easy to park your car.

We reached the place at about 15:00 and as we have made a reservation in advance. That’s where our troubles began. the place is small and I mean tiny all the tables were taken and each table had a person each. the waitress said we could sit outside and she went and asked one guy to move ( I found it odd ) and gave us the table. the place was full.

Now as we soon found out is that this place is not only a restaurant but a hangout place for the Somali community and half of the tables were occupied by “friends” of the restaurant whom were chatting away in their language which was fine but the volume at which they spoke often across the room and around the restaurant .Uncomfortable does not begin to describe it.

The place has bright colours minimal design and it looks clean and tidy. I wouldn't say it is kid-friendly. Even if we don't have kids, I should mention this. Despite the fact that has very small room, it is fulfilled of tables and there's no area for kids. nothing to do with this kind of place.

The menu has no certain speciality, as we had coupons/vouchers the waitress made it a point on what we could get and no reference as to whether we could add money to get anything else on the menu.

Well after we sat down and the man got moved to a different table, next to ours -yay! (not). The waitress run down our options and also took his order as well -turns out he only just came in (way to treat your returning customers). We got a mango drink almost immediately which was awesome if only it didn’t come in glasses a little bigger than a shot glass.

We ordered some samousa and some other starter/entrée and some lamb dish which was special #Somali speciality and for desert we ordered ice cream with coffee.
10. minutes later our neighbour received his meal which as it turns out was exactly as ours.
20 minutes later nothing.
Half an hour later our main meals arrive just as our neighbour was finishing. half way through our main meal our waitress comes out and shoves the entrées on the table with half on an apology under hear breath then disappeared

I don't think that any of the dishes made in the real-time...the temperature of the food was good but I am sure they used microwave oven. The quality was just ok and the taste was good but nothing unusual, special or exciting. The quantity on each dish was unpleasantly limited. We drunk a pitcher of water and couldn’t get more as our waitress was nowhere to be seen.

The service was absolutely disappointing. The waitress had extremely good mood…so good that they had time to chat with their mates while we were waiting for her attention for water. they were yelling each other and they generally made fuss annoying us. In addition, they could hardly notice us when we wanted something (water, more water, salt and pepper, etc.).

We did not even wait for our deserts luckily, we had paid in advance so we left. In conclusion the whole experience was not good, I would never go again to this place for any reason and I don't recommend this restaurant, not even to my worst enemy. I have seen a lot of positive reviews about this place and that’s what made us try it but from what I experienced, those reviews must be from friends. I have to admit that I am quite familiar with Somali cuisine and this was below par even in comparison to other restaurants within 1km radius.

It might chic but just because you paint a donkey, it will never be a zebra.

In a few words...you should better try kfc on the main road...opposite the restaurant. That bad!!

I really, really want to like this place but had a subpar experience on my first visit. Three items I ordered were wrong- the first was my drink. I ordered a coffee and was brought a mango smoothie. Once I told the waitress, she gave me tea instead. It was really nice and heavily sliced, but not what I wanted. Next, we were brought fish sambusi when I wanted vegetarian. Finally, my order of a warm salad was replaced with a rather plain wrap. The bajeyo and sauce they came with were good and I loved the experience of trying Somali food for the first time, but overall my experience was lacking.

Worst somali restaurant ever..never again..bad hospitality and rude racist manager who is only good in hustling people. .i ordered dinner plate of pasta and rice with lamb and the manager brought me 3 pieces of fat infiltrated with tiny lean pieces..and some small portion of rice and pasta that is little for apetizers.then they are very generous to their own african somali people and rude to other
Nationalities .then when tme to pay the manager standing with angry face like he want to fight..
And they claim they are good muslims. .if you are good muslims fear God in the food you are serving. ..or maybe put in the menu that you serve lamb fat for 15 dollars..rip off..god dam you ...never again.
Honest authentic Somali food at reasonable prices. The food is cooked from scratch, home-style, something that always excites me. The place is frequented by first and second generation Somalis, so that's a guarantee of authenticity to me.

I had the tasting platter. It has two yummy fritters, hearty spiced rice with lamb, and a refreshing yogurt-based dessert with mango, grated coconut and walnuts. I loved everything. The mains are man-size, so you won't leave hungry. The tasting platter is also man-sized, something that always makes my belly happy.

The staff are really friendly.

Relaxed atmosphere.

I would happily give them five stars if it wasn't because some dishes were still unavailable, and on the making, after 1pm; on the other hand, is understandable as there are just a couple of ladies attending to the kitchen.

I love genuine international food eateries, and this is one of those!

First time trying Somali cuisine and while I can't comment on authencity, I can definitely say that it was delicious. Rich and punchy flavours, generous serves and great value.

I love how the Somali Eats Specialty came with a banana that is supposed to be eaten with the meal. Interesting combination! My partner ordered the lamb and the tender and meaty chunks of lamb came on a bed of fragrant rice and was accompanied by a delightfully zesty green sauce.

I tried the Muffo, which was corn bread paired with marinated diced beef. The corn bread resembled a softer, thicker and chewier Chinese pancake. Perfect for soaking up all that yummy sauce. I did however find the beef a bit dry and tough.

So impressed were we that we took away the Somali Wrap with fish, and it was just as good the next day. The piquant flavours of the herbs and spices, when paired with the firm and moist flesh of the fish, made for a perfect match.

Service was charming and friendly, and the place had a homely vibe to it. A great first time experience!

Finally got around to try trying this place after reading the reviews and it lived up to my expectations. I had the lamb somalieats specialty which comes with rice and salad, the lamb was very tender and nicely marinated. Everything was fresh and colourful with friendly service to match. Our waitress was new and didn’t write down our 4 orders so we had to repeat them at least 5 times and she still got them wrong. Besides that the food was good.

OMG! Somali food! What a pleasant surprise!
First, I was (wrongly) assuming that Somali food was similar to Ethiopian.
This is very incorrect.

Lots of flavour, lots of fresh veggies and very generous portions.
The meat (beef + goat) were very tender and delicious.
The broth and the Chili green sauce were 2 highlights. Hands down the best Somali restaurant that’s value for money right here!
You are looked after very well by the staff here.
You get served with a banana each, at first we didn’t know that it’s recommended to eat your meal with the banana. We accidentally ate it first. We were then served with their lamb soup which was very tasty and comforting for a free starter.
We both ordered a large somalieats specialty, one with chicken and one with lamb. We also changed one of the Rice’s with the paleo option. I love that they offer this option and I love that these guys offer a wide range of meats and don’t charge you depending on the meats that you choose.
For $10 you can get a main meal that will definitely keep your tummy fulfilled. And if you have a big appetite, you can upgrade to a larger portion for only $3 extra!
Both the chicken and the lamb were amazingly tasty. It was very juicy, full of flavour! The lamb was my favourite. The Somali flavours definitely had my tastebuds dancing. I couldn’t get over how delicious yet affordable this restaurant had to offer to everyone.
The decor was clean and modern, staff were lovely and attentive.
Warning that the green sauce they serve you is very spicy! But if you order a mango smoothie like we did, it helped cool us down easily.
Definitely enjoyed the mango smoothie but would have enjoyed it much more if it could be nice and cold.
Definitely returning and will be a regular
Take your lover, friends, family and even your African friend for delicious Somali authentic meals!

#Somalieats, launched by husband and wife - Abdi Mohamed and Amran Sean on 15 September 2017. What a way to cater to the IG generation with its hip looking brunch spot like decor, high quality service and food at unbeatable prices. Decor is really well thought out, down right to the yellow ladder at the kitchen which synchronises with the yellow flower pots on each table.

Initially thought that the bananas were appetisers but they were meant to be eaten together with rice or pasta. Mixing banana with rice is just playful enough to not sound absurd. Reminded me of the "Dining on a dime" episode where Lucas poured hot black tea on his injera (canjeero) at a Somalian restaurant.

The sight of our lamb and goat rice is as welcoming as an open plate of souvlaki after a long 10 hour shift. "Why didn't we thought about this before?" I said after taking a mouthful of banana with rice. The sweetness and texture of the banana danced with all the C lettered herbs in my lamb basmati rice beautifully. That and a sip of lamb broth soup in between was such a delight. I even got carried away and poured the whole green sauce (nooc basbaas I think) into my rice, which got a tad too spicy but still delicious.

Somali coffee looks like herbal tea with a strong burning gingery and cardamon flavour that managed to wake me up. We also had bajeyo (falafel) and Sambusi, a triangle Samosa to round off a very enjoyable first Somalian meal.

Food is the best way to know a culture. It's lovely to see #Somalieats being more than just a restaurant but also a hub where fellow Somalians could gather and eat together. For non-Somalians, an opportunity to learn about their culture by feasting on some of the most amazing food one could ask for.

P/S: Really enjoyed the playlist here, got a good mix of old and new hip hop hits from Logic's "1800" to Destiny Child's "Say My Name".

As a fan of New Somali Kitchen, I was eager to try the new kid on the block. The fit out is very similar to New Somali Kitchen with its timber interior and so is the menu though the extended dessert menu sounds exciting and I'll explore this next time. I went for the Hashtag Somali Eats Specialty but as I had a preference for vego, I asked for it with Bajeyo (Falafel) but they were out of Falafel so what does one choose when they can't have Falafel? Easy, Goat!!! I ordered the goat and asked if they could top it with some yogurt sauce which they said they would accommodate. When the goat arrived It looked beautiful on a bed of Somali rice and Salad and of course the customary banana. The Goat was tender and beautifully cooked and spiced and a delight to eat though I didn't get my yogurt as requested 😟 though it didn't need it but would have helped to cool the meal down. I find eating the banana with my meal a little heavy though can appreciate the contrasting flavour against the spicy goat and rice but discretely I tucked the banana away in my pocket to enjoy tomorrow. We sat right near the till which was annoying when people were standing over us to order take away or pay, I suggest a small screen to limit the impact. I also noticed on the menu they do a Somali burger so good to see a modern take on Somali food. The restaurant was full & staff very friendly. UPDATE: Second visit last night and it was perfect, could not fault it. This time we were served a beautiful spiced lamb broth with our meal and also tried the Xalwa, homemade dessert which taste a little like Turkish delight but served warm with a softer consistency and truely delicious. Also I got the yogurt over my Bajeyo which was awesome!
