On the busy stretch of Chapel Street it's always nice to find somewhere comfortable to have a coffee. Amba is a lovely little cafe run by fabulous staff who are friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the vibe, as it was relaxed but still modern, with plenty of natural light and a pretty decor.

I didn't really get to look at the menu as I just popped in for coffee. It was excellent, as was the delicious carrot cake that I had with it. Service was also really good, and I can see why Amba is so popular with locals.

Poor service and Inattentive staff. The food is not appetizing and the menu is utterly basic with minimal effort put into the presentation.
Sorry to say but ..
Staff more interested in occupying themselves rather than looking after customers. However, we tried their cheap Eggs and Avo on toast ... and it was cheaply served too .
One small piece of toast with 1 egg and avocado. The desserts in their cabinet looked sad , and had flies on it (the little fruit flies as well as the bigger ones)
This place was not busy at all ... probably because of the lacklustre effort.
Coffee is OK .

Meal: Brunch

Ordered: Super Green and The Veggie Hunter

We visited Amba for Brunch and were treated to a delicious vegetarian (not veg but decided to try something different!) friendly meal. Both healthy meals were delicious and not too heavy so we felt great after! The coffee was well made too. Good food, fast service, great decor and a very friendly environment. A must try place if you are in South Yarra!

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU’RE HUNGRY.
Table of five people, all ordered the Hunter Breakfasts. We waited 20 minutes, 2 meals came out, they ate their meals, finished and sat for another 10 minutes. The other three meals never came, we asked twice and were told it was coming, an hour went by since we ordered and the food never came. We told them not to worry about it and not even a courtesy coffee was offered in apology.

Still hungry and extremely disappointed.
We will not be back.

Food was very good. My french toast was cooked to perfection, and even better it was quite a different style of french toast. I always like something new and when restaurants do something different from the usual way. The poached pear was absolutely delicious, the additional spice flavour made the dish alive and even more flavourful.
The matcha latte was quite good as well as I always like cafes that use pure matcha, not the ones with sugar in them.

Food 0.5: it’s quinoa salad but very small amount of quinoa ... my coffee was served at the wrong table. Perhaps if I wasn’t hungry, I would be more kind for rating... your fruit drink range could do better too. Try a fresher brand!

Atmosphere & decors 1: nice decors

Service 1: it’s very average... they’re very busy which made me wonder why they didn’t hire more staff for peak hours ... they’re also apologetic when I complained about the coffee.

Have been here a few times over the past few years but not recently up until now. Honestly it’s not what I remembered. The staff are disorganised and don’t prioritise customer service. In my time sitting with my coffee I noticed a few disgruntled customers having to ask where their orders are and reorder as well due to the barista and other waiter forgetting. Also I and others were waiting to order for around 5 mins whilst they cleaned the bench top and performed other tasks which did not seem urgent enough to make a customer wait. Whilst I was not in any rush at all I was aware that I was surrounded by busy people obviously trying to grab a quick coffee on their break and i can imagine it would be incredibly frustrating to be them.

Coffee-wise I ordered a soy latte which I honestly could not drink. The top was thick and gloopy , as someone with cafe and barista experience I know that it’s perfectly possible to make a soy latte without curdling the milk and causing this so was a little disappointed.

Sadly don’t think I will return to this little spot which is a shame because the decor is absolutely gorgeous and it’s in a great location.

We decided to try this place for lunch before the movies and hadn't even heard about it or seen it before so I can only assume it's new. Straight off the bat it's a very warm and inviting atmosphere with lovely staff. The food didn't take long to come out and I'd have to say the food was actually very good. The only issue we had is that despite the fact that waitress confirmed our order, they have a long way to go in getting things right. They made the wrong order for me and forgot one of the coffees but quickly fixed things as soon as we asked. I'll definitely give this place another try next time I'm seeing a movie.

Unilke other detailed reviews, this is going to be short, yet detailed.

Let me start by saying I loved this restaurant and was a place I got my daily morning coffee from though its a $ more than the best coffees elsewhere, but this no longer matters, read on!

What restaurant in it's right mind located in one of the most popular locations of the most popular cities in the world asks its patrons to wait to be seated, seats them, hands the menu, and never comes back to take an order for 15 minutes. And when you get up and go to the counter to tell you're ready to order, they say - Oh! I can't take the order kitchen is closed.

All this without a shred of an apology or making up for the shitty situation they put you in.

Net net, not only have they lost a regular patron, they an forget about their most passionate promoter.

As always, I will re-review if the situation changes at all.

We were there on a table of 6, the staff was lovely and welcomed us with a smile. The food and drinks were reasonably priced as well, however when we ordered it all came out at different times, some people finished their meals first then, others got theirs. We ordered the quinoa salad, the avocado on toast, 2 Bénédicte and 1 hunters breakfast and 1 crêpe. The avocado on toast is not much of an avo on toast. It was raw and hard to chew. I didn't enjoy it. From what others were saying from the table it was ok, but not great for us to get back there.

It's a really cool little space.
Food-wise, since I'm already in the property market I got the smashed avo. Didn't blow me away, I think it might've been the small amount of goat's cheese or something. Pretty small portion as well.
The other 2 in the group spoke highly of their meals though, and the fomo was real as I eyed off their plates.
Would've given it a 3.5 but the look & comments of the other meals bumps it up to a 4

Here for a wonderful birthday meal which turned out very disappointing. Undercooked and raw prawns in the linguine, cold rice served with the chicken curry (with chicken parmigiana cut and added), over cooked and chewy calamari. The soft shell crab was good. Service lacking with no cutlery or setup of table to dirty glasses and waitress writing on her hand to take orders. Food was served sporadically. Complained but simply ignored or chef was spoken to. No resolution for the customer, and it seems the chef has not learnt after seeing other negative reviews.

South Yarra’s Chapel Street has always been known for its densely populated retail stores, but in recent times, cafes and restaurants are starting to share the spotlight in this fashion-forward part of town. Take Cafe AMBA, for example. A narrow-spaced cafe enhanced by natural light streaming through the front and back, with an emphasis on the colour gold cementing their place amongst neighbouring fashionista stores.

The Amba Breakfast is a good standard dish consisting of eggs your way, mushrooms, hash browns, spinach, Roma tomato and grilled haloumi. The mushrooms had some rosemary seasoning which is always a good sign of effort. The bacon was not anything amazing, but the crispy and oiliness made it enjoyable to eat as it wasn’t dry or chewy. The chorizo was a bit too spicy for my tastes!

I was invited to visit Amba for lunch and despite the less than desirable weather, I found it somewhat comforting to be under the shelter with probably one of the most amusing characters I have met thus far. Being a soft spoken individual that I am, I seek solace in cafes that enable me to carry out conversations without needing to raise my voice too much. Kai and his team were quite attentive towards us and made us feel very much at home in our little corner. Having a bouquet of freshly plucked pink lilies nearby was bonus too.

Food was okay. Not sure if I've come on an off day though as the friend who recommended we eat there was also dismayed at the quality of the food in this instance. Just very bland and nothing to really encourage you to eat there again. When you pay for a meal, you expect them to know what they're doing.

I got the salt and pepper squid (or something a long that vein) and it was one of the least memorable of this manner of dish, that I can recall having eaten in recent times. We were recently invited by Cafe Amba to come and dine at their newish cafe, opened in January this year and located literally opposite the Jam Factory in South Yarra. We loved the decor as soon as we entered. A lot of cafes these days are going for that hipster feel with the brick walls and wooden furnishings however Cafe Amba had that plus the additional touch of glamour with modern hanging lights against a mirror backdrop making it quite the feature when you walk through. It was very pretty. There is also a back room and a little courtyard however on this occasion we were seated indoors. This was fine by us as it has been pretty chilly lately in Melbourne!

We were provided with the menus with included all day breakfast (yay!) and a separate menu outlining their specials for the day. We ended up ordering most of the items on the specials which included the Open Face Chef Omelette. This had bacon, kipfler potato, chilli and chives served open with toasted Roma tomatoes. I loved that the omelette had chunky bits of the different ingredients. It was also a very generous portion. We shared the cauliflower soup served with a dash of basil pesto and toast. The soup was delicious and again the bowl was huge! I could have had it on its own as a meal.

Davin ordered the salmon and prawn linguine which also had broccoli, onion, tomato, spinach and garlic in Napoli sauce. Now this was the highlight dish for us because the linguine was cooked to perfection, the salmon and prawns were fresh and the flavour of the sauce complimented the dish so well because it was not overly seasoned but just light and delicious. It was gobbled up pretty quickly!

We also finished up with some seasonal fruit salad with natural yoghurt and honey. I got my usual latte which was good and served with the right temperature. We also ordered some fresh juices with our meals. After being served the first couple of dishes, staff asked us if we wanted to move to a larger table to fit all our dishes which was fine by us. This normally happens with most places after they realise we’ve ordered food for more than the average couple! So we moved to the back room which had a lovely feature wall of flowers and plants painted directly onto the wall to finish our meal. It was very pretty.

Overall the food was really good, the staff were very friendly and accommodating and I loved the decor of the cafe. We will definitely be back!

- H

More often than not, the Smashed Avocado ($13.5) will be my go-to meal after a gym session. I proteined this one up with the additions of Bacon ($4) and a Poached Egg ($2.5), and frankly it was one of the better decisions I’ve made. The toast was piled high with fresh, creamy avocado, and studded with sweet grape tomatoes and musty feta. It was already good with a squeeze of lemon, but it was even better with the addition of salty bacon and a creamy yolk – the egg was perfectly poached this time around!

I ordered their lunch special of the day - a seafood risotto with prawns, calamari, broccoli and chilli. It was topped with a grilled piece of Atlantic salmon ($23). It is not often a risotto came also with a piece of fish on top so there was a plentiful abundance about it. The risotto rice was creamy and cooked perfectly. A little hit of chilli was a clever addition to counter the creaminess. I really enjoyed it.

South Yarra – the land of chap laps and pressed juice aficionados gets a golden touch. Cafe Amba opens in the bustling shopping precinct, its golden sign glistening amongst the ho-drum Melbourne winter. Head chef , Tiwa, originally from Thailand, has years of experience manning the kitchen. A floral background adds a feminine touch to lashings of gold, suspended greenery and a light timber interior. The winter menu concentrates on comfort foods: burgers, pastas and breakfast classics. Amongst the ever-flowing cascade of new brunch openings, does Cafe Amba stand out amongst the crowd?

AMBA on Chapel Street is a cosy oasis tucked away from the blistery cold - with its modern lighting, sporadic greenery and wooden features, this breakfast/brunch venue is both trendy and inviting. Eggs benedict isn't usually the most beautiful dish on the menu, but somehow AMBA managed to take the cake. The eggs were poached perfectly, the salmon generous and the hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy - delicious!

Oh how I adore Chapel street - the hub of shopping and dining, traversing the south east suburbs of Melbourne. The thoroughfare is known for the gaudy parade of "Chap Laps", also known as "Laps of Chaps". Personally, I'm more drawn to the cool cafés, bars and restaurants that continue to pop up along this whimsical walk.

Café AMBA is no exception. This little gem couples old charm with modernity, revealing exposed brick walls, wooden furnishings and accents of rose gold. Scattered pot plants and alfresco dining in the courtyard keep the vibe crisp, with smooth R'n'B tunes to set the mood. Yas Drake, yasss.

Upon arrival, the friendly folk here greet you with a smile. Danny, who runs the place, is always busy behind the counter whipping up coffees, with beans ethically sourced from Seven Seeds single original. Coffee lovers, you may get emotional if you're not already hyperventilating (probably from all the caffeine), but the AMBA ANGELS also offer specialty filter coffees including cold drip, Aeropress and pour over coffee. And if you're not really one for the bitter buzz, don't fret. There's plenty of Mörk hot chocolate and Prana Chai to go around, not to mention, fresh home-made juices! Try FreshJuice A: Strawberry, carrot and apple juice. YUM.

The seasonal menu guarantees fresh produce with a rotating selection of dishes to keep your taste buds guessing. The Breakfast burger will remedy the most heinous of hangovers and hungers, with bacon, fried egg, rocket, tomato, cheddar, tomato relish and hash brown nestled in a toasted brioche bun. You can go hardcore, like me, and order extras like a few more hash browns, some baked beans and sauteed spinach on the side. Why not though?

If you're after something sweet and perhaps lighter, I recommend you try the Mixed Berries French Crepes, with warm mixed berries compote, fresh strawberries and optional vanilla ice-cream plonked on top, too.

So if you want it all - fashion, food and fabulous service - check out AMBA on Chapel Street and say hi to Danny for me :)
