Great little Mexican bar/small restaurant. Very busy and lively. Loved the horchata with rum! I drank them out of horchata :-) also the churros were next level delicious. Maybe best ever.

Now there is a groovy Mexican place to visit. With very knowledgeable staff that will take you through a journey of quite different tasting tequilas. When you add some tasty food to the mix you will have a great time. If you want to make sure to get a table you better book since walk in gets frequently turned away.

This place’s service is horrendous! If you want to have a happy vibe, go somewhere else!

We booked table for group of 8 people weeks in advance for our friend’s birthday as a surprise. The booking was confirmed and there was no more communications from the place regarding our booking so we thought it was fine and were so excited to go.

However when we arrived, the waitress told us they could not seat us 8 in the same table and we had to split 4-4 in 2 separate tables and not even next to each other, due to COVID-19 government rule blah blah and their limited space. Ok we understood the new COVID-19 rule impact on business but how are we supposed to know that we could not seat together? Why still took our booking for GROUP of 8 when they couldn’t arrange the group seating “because of the rule”? If they had told us about the inconvenience, we could have cancelled the booking and organise a picnic for our group or find another restaurant that can accommodate 2 tables for 8 but next to each other instead.

In fact, there was a seating arrangement in the corner of the place that could seat for 8 people at 2 tables next to each other, but they said there was another group of 8 people that booked 2 days before our group’s booking, and as such they had to prioritise that booking. Hello!!!! So you knew the inconvenience of the seating and setting up the “priority rule” but you never called us to inform about the inconvenience?????

When I questioned why nobody called us to advise us of this arrangement, so we could cancel the booking and save everyone’s trouble, they bluntly said “it is not our job to inform you that and there is no rule that required us to inform you that” and “we can still accommodate group of 8, you see? But at 2 different tables”! How ridiculous, they literally just gave us 8 seats in the place, but clearly not for a GROUP BOOKING! And they kept saying “the rule is this the rule is that”! Where is the customer service???

Then it got to the interesting part: When I got fed up and said we would not dine here and would look for somewhere else to celebrate our friend’s birthday, they immediately said they would charge our credit card for a “no-show fee” or late cancellation because of less than 48 hours notice!!! Omg that was really furious! This place is so SNEAKY and GREEDY!!!! First they did not inform us they could not accommodate group of 8 TOGETHER and told us only when we arrived. Then when we were not happy because of the inconvenience, they adamantly want to charge our credit card for late cancellation of $50 per person??? Totally disregarded our feeling and our inconvenience and insisted in taking our money!

At the end my friend just wanted to have a peaceful night so he decided to just go in for a few drinks and bites (because they threatened to charge our credit card for late cancellatiom you see? We could have just cancelled our credit card immediately but we did not want to go that way because we are not SNEAKY LIKE THEY ARE) and in the mean time looking for somewhere else for a late dinner!!! To be honest we were so nice to this place already even when they caused us so much inconvenience and ruined our birthday dinner celebration.

Lucky for us we found somewhere else at the last minute, but we had to go through so much stress and the night, which was supposed to be a happy night but then ended up as a rushing dinner and stressful time to find a place to celebrate.

I would not make any comment about the food here because clearly the service left a bitter taste in our mouths. And we were so upset about this incident that we decided to never go back to this place, because you clearly don’t want to eat something in a very bad vibe and terrible service.

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND SAVE YOU THE TROUBLE because there are so many other good places with good food, good vibe and more excellent friendly service!
We came here for their bottomless brunch, a 5-course Mexican brunch with bottomless cocktails ($69), which happens every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The place is small and can get packed super quickly, so you must book a table. The time slot you get is 90 minutes, where they will serve the food whenever it is ready, and you need to order the cocktails.
I loved the food, and the drinks were super impressive! Before I knew it, I had 5 Bloody Orange Spritzes. They were out of this world!
I am definitely coming back again.

I really enjoyed Bodega Underground. The atmosphere was very good. The food was very excellent. Had the bottomeless brunch with some friends the other day.
The corn was just so mouthwatering. The toppings for it was perfect. Drinks were yum. The churros were fantastic and dipping sauce was to die to for.
Overall it was a very excellent and well priced experience. Ill definitely try to go back!

Came here for my birthday last night after being here previously and enjoying their food! We had chosen fish tacos and totopos- which were the only things we enjoyed sadly. We also ordered pork ribs and chicken wings that were so oily my partner and I both could not stomach them, later last night we both felt extremely sick from the food and had to end our night early, so not really an ideal birthday. We had also ordered pork tacos, which they had forgotten and we never received, once we told the waitress about it she had asked their chef if they had gone out already and the chef replied yes! If we had not said something they would have been happy to charge us. Very disappointed after dining here previously and enjoying it. Will not be returning after last nights disappointment. Now today both my partner and I are left feeling ill.

I had late night cravings for Mexican food last week and came across this restaurant called Bodega Underground
Tried their:
Carnitas (Pork) ($13)
Tacos de Pescado (Fish) ($14)
Chucho’s House Lager ($12)
I was surprised How good the tacos are and realised why it was so busy considering it was almost 12am that time. So make sure to book a table ahead of time because it gets pretty busy, we are sitting at the bar 😭
Will definitely be back again

Unfortunately, bottomless brunch was an average experience here. Food came out quick but they were not memorable. Staff were nice but someone did forget our drink order and when we reminded them, we were advised our ordering window was closed. Funky, cool brunch spot in Melbourne’s competitive foodie scene. For the very reasonable price of $58pp you get a 5 course tasting menu and drinks. Our drinks were filled up straight away and they all tasted great. The food was nice but even though it was great Mexican food, a number of dishes were hard to eat; the tacos, corn and chicken tortilla chips were nice but messy. Decor is really good, and there’s a young brunch crowd.

Bodega underground is great if you want to enjoy some authentic Mexican food!
We were a little worried about having to have the set menu (we were a large party of 11) and some are fussy eaters BUT the food selection did not disappoint!
Drinks kept flowing, waitress looking after us was amazing and added a few extra dishes for us.
The corn was so amazing! Something I probably would have never ordered but would go back for!
Honestly no negative feedback other than how dark it was in there and by the time I hit food coma stage - i could of fallen asleep 😂
Be sure to book in advance as it is a small establishment.

We've been here a number of times and thoroughly recommend the tasting menu (although do go hungry, we actually turned one course away the last time, we were so full), the cocktails and the bottomless brunch. Awful service, to the point that we literally never got served by the snarky, mean spirited wait staff who literally spent the entire time we were there talking to their friends or literally making themselves a drink. My partner and I were polite, dressed nicely, and did nothing wrong, but sat like idiots for 45 minutes without anyone taking an order and upon exit being told 'Guess this place wasn't for you'. Bad service from pretentious young people seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of the non-fake reviews. Also keep in mind the drinks are EXTREMELY expensive. Look elsewhere if you want a decent feed.

Attended the bottomless brunch for my best friends birthday. Some of the staff were rude and not friendly (not all of them but a couple of them). None of the cocktails were tasty, very sweet or too bitter. Started off with the corn that was dipped in too much Parmesan, the nachos were cold with an undercooked egg and cold chicken, the tacos were very bland and lukewarm temperature. The sauce that accompanied the fried chicken was spiced to a tolerable level and work well with the dish. In relation to the tacos we ordered the pork, pork & chorizo and fish tacos. 3.5
Bodega Underground is a Mexican bar/restaurant nestled in the far end of Chinatown. In my eyes, it outshines the often bland chains providing a delicious dinner without the hefty prices. My partner and I ordered the Totopos with Guacamole, Papas (with added pork and Cotija), along with fish tacos and pork tacos. Despite initial skepticism surrounding the inclusion of green peas in the guacamole (you don't even notice them), the Totopos became an instant favourite, with the jalapeno cream adding an incredible, but subtle flavour to each mouthful. I could honestly slather it on my morning cereal and enjoy it. We were drawn in by the fact that every other table seemed to have ordered the Totopos and we can now see why. The Papas were just as good, appearing to be the Mexican answer to loaded fries. The adobo sauce and cotija (cheese) combo added a unique tang to the dish and made every bite a treat. One slight criticism to both of these dishes were that they were a tad on the salty side, something you may not notice if you use enough dip. Maybe it was the raised expectations after the two delightful compartir dishes, but the tacos were underwhelming - the pork tacos were quite plain and on the small side, although this is not out of the ordinary. The fish tacos proved to be better, a favourite of my partners owing to the delightful red cabbage and battered fish combo. Bodega Underground is well worth a visit, even just for the Totopos.

I have been here a few times with friends and the food was delicious, good vibes and waitress/waitors always friendly, polite and attentive despite being so busy!

On my last visit I had booked (I recommend booking as it can get very busy) for a table of 8, however as we were all running late so I rung to notify staff and see if we could still keep our table. As the restaurant plays such loud music it was hard to hear what they were saying on the other side of the phone, and all in all there was a misunderstanding whereby we completely lost our table and I was stuck with 8 hungry people on a busy Saturday night.

So I would just like to suggest for the person on the phone handling bookings to have a quiet place to talk to avoid something so little ruin a delicious dinner

We rocked up here and were told it would be an hours wait for a table. I saw a couple of tables that were occupied with two people and wondered if they were communal (I think they can sit up to 6 people). I dropped my name and number and went for a walk, funnily enough they SMSed me 10 minutes after and seated us on one of those tables with another couple.

We start off with cocktails, I got myself a Mezcal Cooler which had a bit of citrus and spice kick with an ancho salt rimming, tasty.

It is hard to resist some elote anytime we dine on Mexican cuisine and this was no exception, it was covered in queso cotija and a spiced chipotle mayo. I wouldn't say it was my favourite elote, while the corn was perfectly cooked and sweet it felt a bit one dimensional and I thought they were a bit heavy handed with the cheese.

We also got their quesadilla frita which had a crispy tortilla shell filled with adobo mushrooms and queso oaxaca which gave it that satisfying cheesy stringiness. It had a mashup of salsa verde and salsa roja, herby and slightly mild.

Their lamb riblets came out and that looked beastly, having been slow cooked we expected the meat to fall easily away from the bone. Unfortunately this was not the case, if I was cooking this at home I'd be satisfied so I expected more. Lamb itself was fatty and heavy and accompanying it was a medley of roasted peppers which were nicely charred, soft and naturally sweet.

One cannot come to Bodega Underground and not order up a serving of tacos. Firstly the fish tacos, whilst my friend got a decent piece my piece of deep fried fish fillet was very small and disappeared underneath all that pea guacamole, chipotle mayo and cabbage slaw. The tortilla itself was 50/50, it was pretty much on the verge of collapse for half of them. The ox tongue taco was the real winner, rich flavours from the meat and quite the hit from the salsa roja and pickled jalapenos.

The atmosphere to the place is very underground and reflects a red hue to every inch of the space, even onto your food. The food actually looked more appetising from the photos taken from my phone than it being presented in its natural environment. A few misses in terms of the food but I can see the attraction to this spot, it's a chill spot to hang out after a hard days work.

The Dear Luncher would describe the tacos at this particular taqueria as average. The tacos felt and looked ample in size, but lacked a distinctiveness in taste. Tacos at well known Mexican establishments seem to execute them a whole lot better. Let's also talk about the range - a disappointing thing (at least on the day The Dear Luncher visited) was the complete absence of any red meat based tacos. Plenty of vego, fish and one pork - but not a single beef or lamb option.

The Dear Luncher understands that vegans and dietary requirement people exist, but it seems Bodega has pushed the lever a little too far in their direction. This was at least The Dear Luncher's observation.

Mrs Luncher was complaining about The Dear Luncher's garlic breath later that evening. These bad boys were heavily laden with garlic. Ease up on the garlic folks.

The vibe inside is quite nice, low-lighting, intimate. The staff could have been a little more attentive. It took a while to get served despite being one of the few tables occupied. When The Dear Luncher's group finally got the attention they required to order some drinks, old mate garson checked his watch to see if the clock had struck 12 yet. Just take our order pal.

The Dear Luncher smashed down two margaritas, and these were a bit meh. They tasted very pedestrian in their construction; which you can tolerate at Taco Bill, but not when you're paying $19 for a small tumbler. It was more along the lines of a margarita-flavoured cordial.

2.5/5.

The bottomless lunch with cocktails is a great option if you want to try new foods and taste some great cocktails. The set menu was good, we could not fault the food we ate. Downfall is that it gets super busy and super LOUD to the point where sometimes you can’t really converse with your table. We went on a Saturday for their latest session, the staff did seem run off their feet, and there was a bit of a wait on ordering our next cocktails. We did look past it because we could see how busy it was, but it does take away from the experience. All in all, still recommend visiting for a bottomless lunch here.

If you don't go that option and order individually I think its very expensive. The food is pretty tasty, everything is gluten free, and my favourite is the fish taco - really delicious! A number of the dishes fall pretty flat like the papas and the bean taco. Service is has either been super friendly and helpful, or snobby and dismissive. The cauliflower and potato dishes were doused with cream and sauce that honestly ruined the dishes for me, they were way too heavy. The bean and mushroom tacos were really bland and almost inedible. The presentation of the corn chops with the dips was really mediocre. Honestly wouldn’t go back if you paid me. The horchata was delicious and refreshing though.

I want to try the Michelada next time. The guys at the next table were drinking it and it looked YUM! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Definitely will go back soon!! 🙏

It’s hard to find really good Mexican food in Melbourne, but Bodega Underground ticked the boxes for me. I’d call it modern Mexican rather than striving for strict authenticity; that said, it’s all about freshness, flavour and accessibility for those with dietary requirements. Really impressed that the whole menu is gluten-free and all the vegetarian options are also vegan (not that you notice the lack of cheese!). We tried the tostados, the mushroom chilaquiles and the sweet potato tacos - all were extremely delicious. Love the use of smoky chipotle, sweet watermelon, meaty mushrooms and vegan queso! Will definitely go back to try other dishes!

Great food but took 2 hours overall, booked 1 week in advance and we were sat at the bar
Other people came in after us and sat at the bar, they were sat at a table within 5 minutes. Bar tenders were nice and the hardest working bar staff we’ve ever seen and the waitress who said it was her first day was amazingly nice
We get it was busy but when you put in a reservation and other people are sat before you it’s a slap in the face
Music was super loud
Good food but I’d work on the head waiters people skills
Good to see once but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back

A Mexican wine bar may not be what you’re expecting to find in Chinatown, however, this is Melbourne, and stranger things have happened. The lowly-lit Bodega Underground is enigmatic to say the least, I can definitely see it as a place that all walks of life would be seen in. We visited the restaurant for lunch, and as always, food took priority for us over the drinks.

I love this place so much. Great food and vibe. The corn is to die for and so is the dip/corn chip bowl. The fish tacos are amazing too. It’s hard to top the corn cobs though. They would be my last chosen meal if I had to choose.

An underground mexican bar with dim lit lighting. Seated on the bar counter, there wasn't much service and the food took a while to come out. Great vibes but minimal interaction even when ordering.

Tapas style food. The elote corn was well charred and fell apart when eaten. Minimal lime and the chipotle mayo was average.

Quisadilla fritters had an amazing handmade tortilla Mushroonm bitter red cabbage fritta

Polo mexican were chicken bite sized and lightly fried.

Papas spicy potato lacked spice and tasted somewhat zesty. The pototo was crispy though with a soft inside l.

Pork tacos were average. Slighlty too juicy

We came here with a larger group for dinner. We shared most of the food and the price of the meal was great value! The fried chicken was definitely a table favourite, and the elotes too (however I felt it needed a bit more sauce compared to others I’ve tried). The tacos were nice but not my favourites in Melbourne, we had a mix of fish, pork and sweet potato. Couldn’t put my finger on it, but while the dishes were nice, they missed the wow factor. Definitely worth the value though.

Unfortunately we did not enjoy our dinning experience. The stools to sit on were uncomfortable after waiting 30 minutes for our first 2 dishes. The polo Mexicano was tasteless and the mayo it came with was worse. The pop corn chicken at KFC is better 😐. Our beef we ordered was a little better but not much improvement on the chicken. The pork and prawn tacos were flavourless, only improvement was when squeezing lime on them. The shells were sloppy.
For the limited option of dishes to choice from it was disappointing. 1 Star for the friendly staff.
Bodega's service was great! They were very helpful in advising us with the item to choose from the menu, and were happy to help us split bill towards the end.

Ordered:
🌽 Elote: Street corn with spiced chipotle mayo and queso cotija ($6.00 each)
🥔 Papas: Spicy fried potatoes, chipotle sauce, coriander, spring onion ($10.00)
🐦 Duck Chilaquiles: Pulled duck, tortilla chips, mole sauce, vegan jalapeno cremo, queso cotija, coriander ($19.00)
🐟 Tacos de Pescado (fish): Fried market fish, green pea guacamole, chipotle mayo, cabbage slaw ($14.00)

Review:
I really liked the fish tacos. They were fresh as I wanted, and wonderfully fried. There was a bit too much guac that it ended up overfilling the bite. However, since this is the only complaint for the fish tacos then Bodega did pretty well!
Elote was also delicious - Mexican corn has never done me wrong especially when there's chipotle mayo in the mix.
The other two dishes (papas and duck chilaquiles) were a little disappointing. Soggy chips and tortilla that made it seem like a sad party was happening in each bite... perhaps leave the dishes to be dipped rather than integrating it all into one?

The interior is quite dim the further you go inside, which accounts for the yellow tone in these photos. Not great for photos, but for a more chill vibes, Bodega does it well.

4.5 rating
Had the lunch special menu which is excellent value for money - nachos and dip, corn, 2 tacos, and a cocktail for $29. The real standout of this place though is the friend chicken. I would give this 100 out of 5 if I could. The seasoning, the crispness of the coating, the accompanying sauce. It’s up there with the best friend chicken I have had in Melbourne. Definitely returning!

Food and Drinks at the very Quirky Eclectic eatery is definitely TopNotch. There's so much character to the whole decor that you feel nothing less than being in a Pub in Mexico

Our personal favorite was everything that we ordered including tequila, potatoes base entre (forgot the name) ceviche taco and Tequila's cousin Mezcal which not many are aware of.

The most unusual experience was being served this particular drink ( we think Ancho ) that is served in a glass rimmed with salt and grounded worm and grasshopper

Super-friendly and decently priced, we simply loved this place.

Vegans and Vegetarians have decent options to choose from.

A Must

This place was amazing! We did the $55 bottomless brunch and it was definitely worth the money. The corn and ceviche was our favourite part and my favourite cocktail was the Paloma. A super awesome find! I was incredibly surprised to find this treasured gem in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Awesome food, yummy drinks and a bustling atmosphere combines into a coeliac’s trendiest haunt.

Can’t stress enough how delicious everything was, particularly their fried chicken 😋

The Mexican fare offered at Bodega Underground leans more towards traditional cuisine rather than the more Americanised Tex Mex, which is a major plus for me personally.

Can’t recommend this place enough!

Was looking for a bite to eat at around 9pm on a Sunday evening and came across this place after googling for it, I think it came up on Broadsheet. It's really cosy inside and nice and warm. The music is a bit loud but my friend and I just sat closer to each other. Was really excited about the food because of the high score on zomato. We shared the cornchips, the cauliflower, mushroom quasadilla and the potatoes. The cornchips were yum and I also liked the cauliflower. The quasadilla was strange and not tasty. Also the potatoes were blunt and soggy from the sauce. We had some left-overs and asked if we could take it but they said they weren't licensed for takeaway. Such a shame of the unnecessary food waste. I asked if they maybe had a container and we could put our leftovers in it ourselves, but the waitress said they didn't have any. Such a shame.

We got here during happy hour so got one of the tequila cocktails 😋😋
My friend and I decided on the 'feed me' option as we figured it couldn't be too much; well we were stuffed by the end of it.
Started with the guac nachos, which you can't go wrong with, then the corn dish and fried potatoes. Then three different tacos. The tacos were average, could have had better seasoning and sauce. Finished off a yummy sweet dessert; I'm not a fan of chocolate but the dessert was so good. Dined here last night for a birthday. Staff and service was friendly and excellent. Vegan friendly menu but overall quite limited. Our favourite item were the grilled corn cobs- sweet and cheesy. The pork chorizo taco was flavoursome, the chicken taco lacked a kick in flavour but the meat was super tender. Hot sauce was not readily available or on offer unlike other Mexican restaurants I’ve been to. We all thought that the mushroom quesadilla was more like a mushroom crispy puff- good flavours but different to what we’re use to. Cocktails were delicious- the house coffee tequila was nice too, the normal tequila shots were served without salt and lemon but they tasted citrusy on its own. Overall a a decent place to come for a small bite and some drinks.

This is a gem of restaurant/bar in Chinatown that certainly lives up to its name. Located in an underground shop front you immediately get transported to a Mexican tequila bar housing some of the finest wines and Mexican tequilas money can buy. You can either sit at the bar and let the superb bartenders dazzle you with their cocktail making abilities or take a seat in the comfortable booths and dig into the exciting assortment of Mexican Street dishes. I highly recommend the fried chicken and the chorizo and pork tacos and let the waiter surprise you with a cocktail or a glass of wine from the Bodega cellar. This is a seriously cool bar that exudes energy and will liven up your night on the town.

This is a great little dive in the city. The staff was friendly and attentive. The seating was cozy and comfortable. We made a reservation for 4 people and unexpectedly added a guest. The staff was quite accommodating. The food came out quick and hot relative to other Mexican restaurants. The whole group ordered the "eat me" all you can which entails a selection of items on the menu. It was delicious. The eat me menu consisted of a couple appetizers along with many different types of tacos and dessert. The corn with queso was sloppy to eat but so delicious, crunchy and salty. We had two vegetarians with us (one of which had gluten free and wheat free requirements) and they accommodated everyone's dietary restrictions (or lack of). The vegetarian tacos were also delicious with its crunchy slaw and sweet potato. The fish taco had the crispy texture and had great flavours. They had a wide variety of vino, cervesas, cocktails and drinks to accompany the food. The chicken with Chipotle mayo was on point. However, we had to ask them to stop brining us food as it came out consistently and was pipping hot. I was stuffed and satisfied at the end of the meal. I highly recommend this cute little joint if you find yourself in the city with an empty stomach.

My problem with restaurants that have small menus is not telling patrons what you’re not serving before they read and order. They ran out of horchata and octopus tacos which were the only two things I really wanted to try. Fish taco was the stand out. Bodega is of those ‘I’ll try it once” restaurants which is a shame because I’ve heard great things.

I have visited Bodega twice now and have mixed feelings about it. The first time we visited we were in a large group and were ripped off when their set menu option food items did not add up to the value of buying the items individually. When I complained the staff obliged and delivered some extra desserts to the table but they were really bad. My Mexican friend who was with us said the food was average. Upside was delicious fish tacos. So i thought i would give it another go and this time mad another taco fiend like me come try the fish tacos again - ALAS we walked away disappointed as the fish wasn’t tasting very fresh - cocktails were good tho

Had planned to try somewhere else close by but when they were full up, we followed the neon sign to Bodega underground.

Opening the door we were greeted with warmth from the heaters and the happy chatter of a busy bar. The vibe felt good so we continued in! With a real tavern/dive bar feel, helped out by low ceilings, packed booths and a mixture of newspaper and magazine clippings all over the walls and roof, we settled into a small table amongst the dimly lit red lights and loud rock tunes. Food was good but not amazing, as others mentioned the staff were very friendly and chatty, adding to the great atmosphere. I could see this being fun at 2am as well :)
Happy and unexpected surprise on a Friday night !

Cool little bar which stays open into the early hours of the morning. At 2am we were able to order some veg tacos - I enjoyed the sweet potato one but the cauliflower one wasn't good. My suggestion would be to bake the cauliflower in spices perhaps.
