A great spin on southern comfort food. The portion sizes are perfect…not too big to finish at the restaurant but you definitely won’t leave hungry. The hot-dipped chicken has great flavor and isn’t over-powering, but it can be complimented with a homemade ranch to tame the spice for those who are sensitive to spicy foods. The sides are excellent too; I’d recommend the green beans with potatoes. The closed-in front porch provides a nice ambiance and the place offers nice craft beers and a better-than-most wine selection by the glass.

My husband and I visited Boone last weekend and on Sunday afternoon Oct 15, I called Proper about reservations. They were pretty full but thankfully they managed to get us in when they first opened.
I was expecting a regular larger sized restaurant but was pleasantly surprised at how cozy and intimate it was. Our Server was a guy (I think his name was Josh). He knew all the menu items and was patient and gave us some great recommendations. We started off with fried green tomatoes w/ pimento cheese. My husband isn’t generally fond of either items but he loved them! They weren’t greasy or overly breaded and were fantastic with the peach drizzle and pimento cheese.
For entrees, I had the meatloaf and my husband who is vegetarian had the pintos. Both were great but I was almost sorry that I didn’t get the pintos because they were THAT good!! For sides I had beans/potato and sweet potato casserole. The crumble was made of panko and candied pecans and was perfect!! We were so stuffed, we didn’t save room for dessert but the chocolate bread pudding looked divine!
This restaurant was our favorite in Boone. We ate at four different other restaurants while we were in town. For both of us, this was our favorite. The chef/lady who owns Proper puts a lot of love into this place. The servers do too. Try visiting first… you’ll want to go back the entire time you’re there!

I absolutely loved eating here with my parents for their anniversary! I loved everything on my plate and the desert was great! For 3 people, 3 entrees and 3 desserts, it was $88 which is a great price for the amount of food and quality of the service. Definitely make sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Excellent Southern food and hospitality! The collard greens (vegetarian, with curried tomatoes) were the best I’ve ever had. Might go back for just an entire plate of those! Great spot!!

Everything about the Proper I love, local, fresh food and great service. It's one of those small quant places that fill up fast, so you might want to make a reservation. The food is amazing. It's a must please while you're in Boone

We stopped in after a Campus tour and they accommodated us without a reservation. They were so nice. We all had beverages while we waited for a table. They had a great selection of Alcohol Free drinks to enjoy. A wine list too. The food was amazing. Fried green tomatoes with peach sage drizzle, potato cakes with pimento cheese-Fabulous. We will be back next time we are in town.

Wow, I used to come here all the time in college from when it opened to 2013.
The soul food at this restaurant is simply divine. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a perfect blend of spices that make it irresistible.
The macaroni and cheese is creamy and decadent, with a gooey melted cheese that melts in your mouth. And let's not forget the collard greens, simmered to perfection with just the right amount of smoky flavor and tender texture.
Each bite transports you to a place of comfort and nostalgia, and the flavors linger long after the meal is over. This is soul food at its finest.
It’s amazing this place is still open and looking forward to revisiting during my next visit in the near future.

Incredible food with a wonderful home cooked and low key “mama’s kitchen” vibe. Do yourself a favor and get the potato cakes! They are off the charts.

This is an awesome restaurant and location. The setting is very quaint, southern, and proper. It is essential posh or high end southern comfort food. The restaurant is in what looks a sizeable old home. Pet friendly with an aesthetically pleasing seating area that definitely fits the vibe/style of the restaurant. Food is amazing, plus the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Quality food and service at a price you won't be mad at. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the area, tourists or locals!

I made the drive from Wilkesboro after work on a Thursday to check this place out and it was totally worth the effort. It's cute and I was very comfortable eating by myself. The food was awesome (especially the hush puppies and chocolate pecan tart with whipped cream) and Christy was the sweetest waitress I've ever had. P.S. Park in the numbered parking spot lot across the street if their parking lot is full - $3.50 in the evenings but no towing worries.
