If you want amazing food, coffee and customer service then this is a must-see cafe to visit. There are many different items on the menu and they are willing to cater to many different dietary restrictions. I would recommend trying the smashed avocado on gf toast.

I liked the décor and the msuic but the old school(?) chairs are past it, torn and feel like an old camping 70's chair - uncomfortable. Coffee was okay - blueberry and dark chocolate muffin was dry and missing blueberries. So just a pass.

A bit patchy when it comes to service and decor however the food was superb.
The waitress delivered 1/2 of the order incorrectly, I suppose that can happen from the best of us.
Decor is a bit dated and ok, it's not a posh restaurant.
The food, cook to perfection. That is rare, all the ingredients were fresh and I polished my plate. The coffee was nice, not too hot and not cold which is a nice change.
Overall a decent grub, I'll go back.

Absolutely beautiful coffee served here. A magnificent brew. Lots of care taken choosing the beans and making it. There’s evidence pride in the whole process and it really shows. Slightly quirky but sort of endearing service. This is a lovely bright wide former shop with high ceilings. I liked the fit out. Good music on. Had a very good feel about it here. Nice place. I’ll be back for food at some point.

A surprisingly spacious cafe with a courtyard area that’s perfect for brunches in the summer. There’s not of lighting inside Small Block, and with the broody background music the place does feel quite dark despite it being really sunny outside. <br/><br/>We tried the Huevos Rancheros and the Summer’s Breakfast. I really liked the idea of a breakfast tortilla and I was amused by how when it came out, the two tortillas sandwiched a filling of beans and chorizo. The texture of the tortilla itself was pretty good - crisp and still soft. Overall, I guess I would’ve liked a little more flavour in the dish. The salsa could be more punchy in my opinion - perhaps more tomatoes, less cucumber and more lime juice. I’m not sure how exactly to put this but the tortilla doesn’t really taste of anything; a good tortillla has this beautiful savoury taste but this one, although texture-wise it’s great, just didn’t have any flavour. <br/><br/>The Summer’s Breakfast was your usual breakfast fare of eggs, fanned avocadoes, sourdough and hollandaise. The added beetroot added a nice touch of acidity and overall, each element was cooked well (or was good fresh produce). <br/><br/>I’m not sure I would come back to Small Block at this stage with the surplus of zanier brunch menus scattered around Melbourne. But definitely, pop by to this place if you live in the neighbourhood as it is a good place to get your work done - or get some much needed alone time because it’s not too busy.

The food at Small Block is good, if not great. Coffee is excellent. Service is woeful. Forgotten orders are common I my experience, long waits when there are hardly any patrons, no system for attending to tables and long waits even to put your order in. Good for a takeaway coffee, but there are plenty of other places nearby that are a better experience. Not up to scratch for this neck of the woods.

Small Block has long been a local favourite, however over the past year service, atmosphere, and quality of food have been on a slow and steady decline. What was once a welcoming and upbeat local haunt now more closely resembles a creche. I'm all for cafes and restaurants being family friendly, but having grimy toys and books (supplied by Small Block) strewn across the floor is hazardous and meant staff spent more time picking them up than taking orders. We had menus dropped in front of us and then we're left unattended. Our orders were never taken, so we ordered at the till. Our meals came fast, but our coffees did not, and "smashed avo with chilli relish" was more like a thin smear of avocado on barely cooked toast, and a drizzle of capsicum and feta dip (which I am sure I have bought from the super market before...), oh and our coffees never came. Staff were apologetic, but there were too many sorries. No one wants to go out to hear "sorry" 10 times before 10am – people want good breakfast and coffee, delivered with good service. This place used to be a favourite, I hope it can be once more.Make Small Block Great Again.

Great range of breakfasts at a reasonable price (around the 10-15 range unlike the 20-25 found at similar cafes). After a 2 week pilgrimage of Melbourne breakfasts, the staff at Small Block made us feel so welcome (also played & entertained our baby!) that we returned for our last 3 breakfasts before returning to London. A beautiful local that makes everyone welcome!

I came across this place as it was on a list of child friendly cafes and having kids this is a great convenience. My husband and I went with our children and the menu looked good. Good food and coffee did not disappoint, however the staff and atmosphere did! The staff looked miserable and not very friendly at all. Food can be good but if the service and staff don’t match then I wouldn’t recommend. For a child friendly place they didn’t even look like they were used to having kids around.

Clyde and I have been coming here since we met and we can't fault it. <br/><br/>Our started order is the eggs Benedict with a side of bacon, chorizo and mushrooms for Clyde and I get the summer breakfast with hollandaise sauce. Our meals are cooked to perfection every time and we are always left feeling overly full and extremely satisfied.<br/>Their coffee is amazing too. <br/><br/>The place is run down, and the furniture old but it works. It gives the place a hipster, homely feel. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. <br/><br/>This will always be our go to place for breakfast and we would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

This is the first time I am complaining, feel kinda bad. I have worked in hospitality for many years and I respect good customer service. I took my sister there to have coffee after a long beautiful walk. The place was almost empty when we went there and there were 3 staffs standing near the coffee machine. I asked them if we could take a seat out side. The table was full of rubbish left by the previous customers. It took a while for someone to come to check on us. I ordered a coffee without chocolate. The girl picked up the cups but didn't clean the table and said she will get water for us. The table was never cleaned which was full of cigarette butts and astray and an empty water bottle ( which I had to put in the floor to stop the butt flying further. It took almost 15 minutes and we were about to leave, the coffee came and it was with chocolate. My sister took one of them anyways as she was not bothered to wait any longer. They tasted really bad. Dunno about food but coffee and the service was pretty bad.

Was trying to find a cafe that was open on new years day and saw that this cafe was open. Apparently, the kitchen wasn't open and the shop was only doing coffees and some baked goods. I had an iced mocha while my friend had an iced chocolate. Mocha was average and the iced chocolate wasn't that great either. However, the blueberry muffins wasn't too bad. Most likely won't be back anytime since there's other places that offer wayyy better coffees. Not a good start to the new years.

The worst customer service i have ever encountered. Didn't get acknowledged when walking through the door, let alone any kind of help finding a table, then after stumbling about to find a bench to sit at the staff proceeded to be ignore us for 10 minutes. It was cup day and it was very busy.. but you don't ignore customers! A simple "hello we'll be with you when we can" would've made me stay and wait.

Came out with no berries... When I questioned them.. I was told 'sorry' the guy that delivers the berries just arrived and he could bring them out shortly. I said ok so I waited.... 15minutes later bowl of berries came out. <br/>They had been defrosted, and strawberries were like those out of a tin! I don't expect to come to a cafe and get defrosted berries on my breakfast. This I could have done at home and saved myself the $20 for coffee and frozen berries.<br/>Sorry small block.... But the same menu for last 10years, you are resting on your laurels. There used to be a line out the door when we first moved to Brunswick -but you must realise that with some great cafes in Brunswick all around you. You need to lift your game. <br/>

Damn good!. After walking around Lygon St looking for breakfast on a Sunday morning we stopped here, and I'm glad we did! Perfect coffees, friendly but unobtrusive service, and beautiful food made with care. We had the summer breakfast (avocado and feta on toast with poached eggs) and the buck rarebit (kind of like welsh rarebit on a bagel-type roll with spinach, poached eggs and chili jam) and both were fantastic. Eggs were poached perfectly without getting water all over the plate (my pet hate!) Would come back again in a flash.

Absolutely awful service. Very disappointed. When I walked in on a quiet Monday morning my friend and I were not even greeted with a hello, instead the staff member slammed glasses of water onto our table and stood staring at us. They then made the wrong coffee and bought it over - and it took us at least five minutes to catch their attention about it, as the staff were too busy chatting amongst themselves. The replacement coffee took 10 minutes to arrive, and due to the layout of the cafe we could see the staff members standing around talking instead of making it. When the correct coffee finally arrived, it was slammed down on the table without so much as a 'sorry'. <br/><br/>After our coffees were finished the dirty glasses sat on the table for 15 minutes while the staff ignored them, not clearing them, offering another coffee, or asking if we were ready to order food. <br/><br/>All in all the service was exceptionally rude, the coffee was mediocre and I am very disappointed. Will not be back, there are so many other fantastic coffee shops on Lygon St where they at least give you a 'hello'.

Lovely staff, good food, reasonable prices. This place would be my pick from the strip between Brunswick Road and Glenlyon. It certainly has the best coffee of the bunch. The food is solid and unpretentious, delivering all the café staples, and the prices seem pegged to 2007 levels. The staff are warm and friendly.

When we ask to order food while ordering coffees, staff gets grumpy. <br/>They used to have the best feta, mushrooms, etc, it's now cheap garbage. <br/>When we order orange juice it always arrives after coffee or even food, when they just have to pour the juice from a bottle into a glass.... How hard....<br/>Also, in three years going there at least once or twice a week, we have never ever been acknowledged by pretentious staff. Not a smile, nothing.<br/>We have been now eating at an other cafe down the road and after couple months we were treated like regulars, warmly greeted and have a nice chat as soon as we push the door. Every staff members recognizes us and that is something missing at Small Block.<br/><br/>I'll just finish saying that people used to queue and wait a while for a table there, now on a Sunday, it's empty, maybe you guys should question yourselves? Read reviews and take notes from your customers.

Really great find with good atmosphere. We came here with a voucher and were treated no different to everybody else. The staff were very attentive and friendly and the coffee and food is really nice. Its really warm inside which is great in Winter and they have high chairs and a little table and chairs with toys/books for little ones which makes it easier for mums with bubs. I will definitely be coming back!

Worst staff. The wait for coffee is ridiculous, and the coffee is terrible. This place used to be great I don't know what happened. Really lazy staff, I once was left waiting ten minutes for my change while the waiter talked to his friends. The final straw was when I was given the incorrect coffee and then the staff were so rude to me about it I had to leave. <br/><br/>This place has such great potential, but the staff ruin it.

The waiting staff were lovely, big smiles and very accommodating for first thing on a Sunday morning. The coffee was smooth and invigorating and the food was well presented and delicious. I had the summer breakfast which was well put together, full of flavour and a fantastic all-rounder. This was a really good choice for breakfast and we will definitely be returning!

After waiting almost 1 hour for food, both orders were wrong. Some ten minutes later the orders reappeared with the wrong bits scraped off the plate and the correct elements added. What we ended up with was a cold second hand breakfast. <br/><br/>There was no inquiry as to how our food was nor apology as we paid the bill. Today I ordered poached eggs on a bagel, which was supposed to come with spinach but it came out with asparagus. No staff member notified me of the change which was disappointing.

As I passed Small Block every morning on my way to University, I couldn't help but crave a coffee in their small and quaint outdoor area which always seems to be occupied by friendly local Brunswick-ians enjoying coffee and engaging in animated conversation.

Consistency is King. To the review below... mate- It's a cafe not a bistro! They don't need to change their menu regularly. The reason why they don't change it is because it works. There's always the specials board for something different. I have been coming here for years and the food and coffee is consistently good. I tend not to go on the weekends though as it's always busy and naturally the food takes longer to come out. The summer breakfast is my fave. Just add bacon if you're a Carnivore. It's bliss.

These guys haven't changed their menu in a decade - BORING!! And the service is touch and go - occasionally good, mostly poor. Right near my hairdresser so I've been a number of times out of convenience but am sick of the disappointment!

If you are not a diabetic (or prepared to increase your insulin dose if you are) and feeling like some yoghurty rhubarb-crumble for breakfast, try the Small Block Muesli. If you value your teeth and pancreas perhaps stick to the eggs.

Worth a try!. Love Small Block, great coffee, nice consistent food and friendly service. Have been many times and keep going back, my favourite is the Summer Breakfast, although would recommend most things on the menu. Definitely worth trying it out just avoid the weekends if you can as there tends to be a bit of a wait for food and drinks!

Corn fritters and pancakes!!!! Devilishly delicious and paired with a beautiful coffee, what more can I say? Definitely be back to devour the rest of the menu and sneak a naughty cup cake or two.

Worst customer service in Melbourne? Probably.... I'm still waiting for the coffee I ordered 3 years ago.<br/><br/>Seriously though, my one and only experience at this place was just terrible, and the people sitting around would've agreed.<br/><br/>The staff completely ignored most of the outdoor tables, and all of the waiter's effort was put into serving his group of friends, who not surprisingly got their coffee and breakfast in record time.<br/><br/>Customers nearby were complaining that they had been waiting over 40 minutes for their food.<br/><br/>After half an hour of no coffee, and no waiter interested in following that up or wanting to take our food order we got up and left, and I'm sure they didn't care or notice.<br/><br/>There are that many good cafes in Brunswick that there is no need to return to this god awful place.

Such good food ! The summer breakfast is beautiful as well as the pancakes.. The coffee is also consistantly good . If anything , food sometimes take a while but it's always fresh and well done .. Although service can be a little slow there is a friendly relaxed vibe and they are never rude

Our favourite breakfast in Melbourne. This is our favourite place for breakfast in Melbourne. Summer Breakfast is a must. Great coffee, relaxed and very friendly service and atmosphere. When it's busy the wait on food is longer but just have another coffee.

The staff were inattentive and lacked courtesy. Coffees were brought out at random times we waited for 10mins between one coffee to the next. The food was rather bland, and average. They brought out the food with no avocado, and then told us the had run out. You would think they would tell you that once you ordered. Won't be back there for sure.

Staff need training..... I have been going to Small Block for years.....and will on the odd occasion continue to (its my partners favourite place) but i'm so over the "too cool to work" staff attitude that seems to be more present each time I visit.<br/><br/>I've never liked their coffee and don't actually even bother ordering it anymore. The chai I had today was average but their food is always great ...the summer breakfast is the best; though being gluten intolerant they could get some better gluten free bread then the supermarket tasting stuff they currently use. <br/><br/>My issue today (and on other occasions recently) is staff standing around not doing much at all. It's Saturday and its Brunswick so of course the cafe is going to be packed...I get that, but one of the staff sole job seemed to be telling people as they entered that it was going to be a 25min+ wait until they could get a table...ignoring the fact that i'd been waiting 25min after being seated for my chai and then a further 30 min until someone managed to look me in the eye to come take my food order. Other people wouldnt have had to wait so long to be seated, fed and on their Saturday way if the 6 or so staff standing around hugging and chatting in the middle of the room attended to all the people waiting.

For the first time in a long time I felt like I fit into the trendy cafe culture again even with bubs in tow. Often eating out with a baby/toddler means choosing somewhere relaxed with good facilities for children (but not such great food) or going somewhere where you can eat well but not relax. Thankfully, at Small Block, not only could I sit and relax knowing there was a change-table if we needed it (we did!), a high-chair (one of a few funky vintage highchairs I noticed) and understanding staff, the menu was also interesting and my meal delicious.<br/><br/>

Love this place. Good coffee, good service we are always made to feel very welcome whether eating or just in for a leasurely coffee. Plus unlike some other breakfast places kitchen happily makes changes if possible.

Pretty average pancakes, nicely aerated but nothing special. The cream was fine, and the poached pear was fresh – but there was nothing to rave about. They certainly didn’t make it into my top 5. Sorry Small Block. Overall – Small Block didn’t rock my world. It’s a great local café that has stood the test of time, and is clearly a favourite with the local hipsters as they kept pouring in the door! Rowena wanted to make sure that I made special mention of the chairs – which are quite uncomfortable. But they’re quirky you see – so you put up with them!

The only thing that really let this great little cafe down was one pretentious staff member, whose service (or lack thereof) unfortunately left us feeling a bit put out. But apart from that the overall experience was a pleasant one, and I would definitely return (I have to try those tortillas!).

The Summer Breakfast has been on the menu since BC and is the only thing you should be ordering. Poached eggs, avocado, beetroot relish, spinach and Persian fetta.

Coffees are cheap and yummy and so is the food. The crowd can get quite busy but never too much to stop you from waiting a few minutes. If you’re in the hood, definitely stop by because they do all the basics and you can never pass up on a good
